Choosing A Synagogue Isn't Easy It's not easy finding the right congregation in Central New Jersey, where the accessibility of diverse "Jewish spiritual options" sometimes turns the search into a long bout of "synagogue shopping." In this brief introduction, we want to tell you some of the reasons our congregants have selected CBT. Jews join synagogues today for many of the same reasons their ancestors did: to understand their beliefs, to affirm their beliefs through acts and behaviors, to identify with the Jewish people, and to participate in a vibrant and creative community. What distinguishes CBT is its unique balance of the "three B's" of spiritual life believing, belonging, and behaving.
Understanding Judaism
reconstructionist judaism is theoretically an outgrowth of Conservative, butit's sort of out in left field. It's a very new, very small movement.

Extractions: The different sects or denominations of Judaism are generally referred to as movements. There are basically 4 major ones in the world today: Reform, Reconstructionist, Conservative and Orthodox. Orthodox, and sometimes Conservative are described as "traditional" movements. Reform, Reconstructionist, and sometimes Conservative are described as "liberal" or "modern" movements. These distinctions apply primarily to Ashkenazic Jews, not to Sephardic Jews. Orthodoxy is actually made up of several different groups. It includes the modern Orthodox, who have largely integrated into modern society while maintaining observance of Jewish law, Chasidic Jews, who live separately and dress distinctively (commonly referred to in the media as the "ultra-Orthodox"), and the Yeshivish Orthodox, who are neither Chasidic nor modern. The Orthodox movements are all very similar in belief, and the differences are difficult for anyone who is not Orthodox to understand. They all believe that G-d gave Moses the whole Torah at Mount Sinai. The "whole Torah" includes both the Written Torah (the first five books of the Bible) and the Oral Torah, an oral tradition interpreting and explaining the Written Torah. They believe that the Torah is true, that it has come down to us intact and unchanged. They believe that the Torah contains 613 commandments binding upon Jews but not upon non-Jews. In most of the world, Orthodox Judaism is pretty much the only Judaism. The other movements are largely an American phenomenon, though they also exist in Israel due to immigration.

In her new position, Freitag-Keshet will lead Shabbat and holiday services, offer counseling, and develop programming. She will have an office in Eliot House, home of the college's Office of Religious and Spiritual Life. "I am incredibly excited about my work at Mount Holyoke," Freitag-Keshet said. "I have a strong commitment to developing Jewish community and helping people of all ages find spiritual meaning in the Jewish tradition and Jewish culture. Today it's the "hot ticket" in Jewish life - one that attracts both attention and money. That wasn't the case, however, when Rabbi Jeffrey Schein made a career-defining decision 30 years ago to eschew the pulpit for the pupil and dedicate himself to Jewish education. Rabbi Jeffrey Schein Schein came early to the party, and now the celebration is for him. The Shaker Heights resident will be honored with the Rabbi Ira Eisenstein Award for Distinguished Rabbinic Service at the annual meeting of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association to be held in Cleveland next week. The award has usually gone to a pulpit rabbi. Schein is being honored as a Jewish educator. A professor at the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies, Schein considers his primary work the teaching and training of Jewish educators here. But his "second passion," says the founder of the Reconstructionist Havurah of Cleveland, is Reconstructionist Judaism; the creative, innovative work he has done as a teacher in this field is the reason he is being honored.

Answer: Although mitzvah (plural, mitzvot) is colloquially used by Jews to mean "a good deed", it actually signifies a commandment - something that we are obligated to do. Of course, a mitzvah implies a M’tzaveh, someone (or Someone) who commands that we follow these laws and practices. Since Reconstructionists consider creativity and insight to be the modern day counterparts of revelation, we can still use the term mitzvah without hesitation. Over centuries and millennia, our people fashioned norms of ethical and ritual behavior both to make each of us more humane and to bind us together into an international and historical people. For us, mitzvot are guidelines; we need to study the tradition and then select those aspects of it that are meaningful. Tradition contains truths - but not absolute truth - spiritual verities, if not always scientific and historical ones.
