This area extends northwards from the A66 to the Scottish borders and from the Solway Firth in the west to the hills of the Pennines in the east. The General Meeting district takes in the Northern Fells of the Lake District National Park, the Cumbrian plain northward to the Solway estuary and parts of the Eden Valley and northern Pennines. To the south, Cumberland General Meeting borders with Westmorland General Meeting , which encompasses the heartland of early Quakerism in Northern England. To the north, across the Solway Firth, our nearest neighbouring meetings are those in West Scotland Monthly Meeting, located in the Galloway peninsula. Extractions: Thornbury A peaceful 17th century, grade II listed, thatched meeting house with a separate small hall, available for hire, set in the burial ground. People who come to worship for the first time tell us how peaceful the Meeting House is. Though there are not many of us, and sadly children don't come often, we offer a warm welcome to everyone. Meeting lasts for an hour after which visitors particularly are invited to stay for refreshments. Our Hall is available on Sunday mornings for use as a children's room and prior notice of visiting children will allow us time for suitable preparation. The Hall is also used by a local playgroup in term time (mornings) and by several local groups meeting (usually fortnightly) in the evenings. Details of availability and hire charges can be obtained from the Clerk. Portishead Friends outreach includes their long-standing co-operation with the other churches in the town on issues of joint concern.

Extractions: Email: friendscentre@quaker.org.nz Auckland Friends Centre Auckland Friends Centre, situated next door to Mt. Eden Friends Meeting House, is about 3km from Auckland city centre. It is used for a variety of activities by local Friends, including a mid-week Meeting for Worship followed by a shared meal, and occasional discussion groups and committee meetings. The Friends Centre is the home of our Resident Friends who both care for it and welcome guests. Guest Accommodation The Friends Centre offers simple accommodation for Friends travelling to and from Auckland. Enquiries should be sent to the Resident Friends at the Centre. Maximum stay is two weeks. Guest Room #1 comprises a twin-bedded room with an en-suite bathroom plus a kitchenette/dining area with refrigerator and basic cooking equipment. A simple breakfast can be provided at an additional cost of $5.00 per person by arrangement with the Resident Friends. Guest Room #2 is a twin-bedded room with shared toilet/bathroom facilities. Guests using this room are provided with a breakfast which is included in the daily cost. Arrangements are available for making tea or coffee. There are no facilities for guests to prepare or store food in this room but 'takeaways' may be eaten in the Lounge or Dining Room (subject to Resident Friends' permission).

The following notes may be of help to those of our visitors who are unfamiliar with Quaker worship. We as Friends believe that there is something of God in everyone - a Christ within or an Inner Light. We worship together - without clergyman, ritual or music - because we hope to become more aware of God's light guiding us and His voice speaking to us. Through prayer and silent meditation we strive to come into a real awareness of the Divine Presence working in us. As we seek to know God's will, we may feel within an inspiration to share with others the insights we have gained. Such sharing may take the form of vocal prayer or ministry; from time to time others in the Meeting will feel similarly moved to respond to these messages. Thus out of the silence often emerges a real sense of shared communion with the Father of us all.

Extractions: Friends: Who We Are The Religious Society of Friends, more commonly known as Quakers, began in the religious ferment of England in the 1600s. The basis of all Quaker beliefs is the presence of "that of God" in everyone. Everyone has an "Inner Light" for guidance. Though many choose to ignore it, it is always there to be reached. Though clearly Christian, the early Friends would quote the Koran when speaking with Turks because of the belief that other peoples who also had access to the Inner Light would understand better if spoken to in terms they understood. The Quaker response to those in positions of power who are not willing to listen, even to those who are brutal and insensitive, is a practice called "Speaking Truth to Power," which holds that everyone contains a spark that can be reached with prophetic voices. The Quaker method of worship involves the use of silence so that people can "center down" and be attuned to the Inner Light. Friends sit together in a Meeting for Worship, and speaking occurs when someone is moved of the Spirit to speak. The silence that follows the message is part of the message, to give others a chance to contemplate the point just made. There is no minister or, more accurately, everybody is a minister. All are equally invited to contribute to the spiritual journey of the group. Pastoral work and administrative work are done by committees and by a monthly Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business, which all can attend. Decisions are made by consensus of the group, so that there is no tyranny of the majority and the consciences of all individuals are respected. The Meeting is the group, analagous to a church, and Meetings are associated in larger geographical groups which meet yearly (hence, the Yearly Meeting).

Mills MFM History and its forthcoming sesquicentennial On May 13th, the ad hoc History Committee recognized the beginning of our Meeting Sesquicentennial and made a history of the William and Catherine Wales family available. 150 years ago, on May 12, 1851, the Wales settled in Minneapolis as its first Quakers. In 1855, regular meetings for worship after the manner of Friends began and in 1860 Minneapolis Friends built a meetinghouse at 8th and Hennepin. Who are the builders and worshippers at this meeting house? Are we only a sect of the past or do we really exist today? We, who have been called Seekers of the Truth, Quakers and Friends, are members of the Society of Friends. Yes, we are a sect, but we do not separate ourselves from the world around us.

Extractions: from past issues The Religious Society of Friends is organized into Monthly, Quarterly and Yearly Meetings. The basic unit is the Monthly Meeting, the equivalent to the local congregation in most other churches. It is customary for Friends to worship every Sunday at a designated time. It is also the practice to hold business meetings once a month. Members of a Monthly Meeting are also members of the Quarterly meeting which meets for worship and business every three months. Similarly, all members within a certain geographic region belong to a Yearly Meeting which meets for several days once a year. Bucks Quarterly Meeting is composed of 13 unprogrammed Monthly Meetings and one Worship Group in the Bucks County area (including one New Jersey Meeting).
