Extractions: Salvation Army at Scene of NY Plane Crash Within minutes of an airplane crash in the Rockaways section of New York City, The Salvation Army deployed three canteens, a vanload of volunteers from the organization's headquarters on 14th St. in Manhattan and an experienced grief counseling team to console workers and families. Coming on the heels of the September 11th terrorist attack, the air disaster placed additional strain on The Salvation Army's resources, but emergency efforts nevertheless were immediately implemented. The canteens sent to the scene were equipped to provide meals and beverage to those involved in rescue operations. Fifteen volunteers were called into action to help man the canteens, load supplies and provide other services in the residential New York City area where the American Airlines Airbus crashed early Monday morning. Major Molly Shotzberger, a Salvation Army officer who was instrumental in organizing grief counseling teams for the TWA 800 disaster and for the World Trade Center tragedy, was organizing experienced counselors at The Salvation Army's warehouse located at Hangar 5 at Kennedy Airport.
