Extractions: by Bill Samuel Reprinted with permission from Quaker Religious Thought #87 (May 1996) I appreciate the invitation from the editor to respond to Grant Thompson's paper, "A Perspective on Friends Membership" (QRT #86). I will draw upon that and other articles in the same issue in a discussion of Christian renewal within the Religious Society of Friends, with a particular focus on Christians in meetings where Friends lack a corporate commitment to Christ. The second series of choices offered by Thompson is: Thompson restricts his discussion to the first option. While I agree with Thompson that this should be the case, it is not in the Monthly Meeting (Adelphi) and Yearly Meeting (Baltimore) in which I hold my formal membership in Friends. For those of us for whom being part of the Body of Christ is central to our identity, this presents major problems. Rupert Read suggests, in "On the Nature and Centrality of the Concept of 'Practice' Among Quakers," that it is practice rather than faith that binds Friends together. Furthermore, he maintains that it is not even important that Friends claim faith in God.

The activity of "ODA" Society on protection of human rights and freedoms. By the time when "ODA" Society was founded, there was no Orthodox Church in Armenia. In Kanaker , the building of the regiment church built in the beginning of the XIX century by the Cossacks, later on turned into a Culture House, has been preserved. "ODA" applied to the authorities of Armenia, to Patriarch of Georgia Ilia and Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Aleksiy II with a request to restore the church. As a result, the Orthodox Church of "Holy Virgin's Cover" in Kanaker functions since August 1991. This has been the first action of "ODA" Society having for its ultimate goal the preservation and affirmation of the traditions of Russian culture.

Extractions: ounded in England in the seventeenth century by George Fox (1624-1691), the Society of Friends is a radical (pacifist) Protestant sect with roots in the period of the English revolution. Their quaint-sounding thees and thous, and their practice of keeping hats on indoors derive from George Fox's determination not to make signs of obeisance to any man, including the king. Since Quakers understand the spiritual life in entirely inward terms, they do not employ sacraments or other outward forms in worship. The doctrine of the Inward Light justifies Quakers' speech as the prompting of the Spirit. As any member may be "moved by the Spirit" to witness, all members at meeting for worship are potential ministers, and Quaker women preached or spoke in meeting from early days, eliciting Dr. Johnson's remark: Sir, a woman preaching is like a dog walking on its hind legs. Extractions: Friends: Who We Are The Religious Society of Friends, more commonly known as Quakers, began in the religious ferment of England in the 1600s. The basis of all Quaker beliefs is the presence of "that of God" in everyone. Everyone has an "Inner Light" for guidance. Though many choose to ignore it, it is always there to be reached. Though clearly Christian, the early Friends would quote the Koran when speaking with Turks because of the belief that other peoples who also had access to the Inner Light would understand better if spoken to in terms they understood. The Quaker response to those in positions of power who are not willing to listen, even to those who are brutal and insensitive, is a practice called "Speaking Truth to Power," which holds that everyone contains a spark that can be reached with prophetic voices. The Quaker method of worship involves the use of silence so that people can "center down" and be attuned to the Inner Light. Friends sit together in a Meeting for Worship, and speaking occurs when someone is moved of the Spirit to speak. The silence that follows the message is part of the message, to give others a chance to contemplate the point just made. There is no minister or, more accurately, everybody is a minister. All are equally invited to contribute to the spiritual journey of the group. Pastoral work and administrative work are done by committees and by a monthly Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business, which all can attend. Decisions are made by consensus of the group, so that there is no tyranny of the majority and the consciences of all individuals are respected. The Meeting is the group, analagous to a church, and Meetings are associated in larger geographical groups which meet yearly (hence, the Yearly Meeting).

George Fox wrote, "For teachings, churches, and worships that have been set up by man's earthly understanding, knowledge, and will must be thrown down with the power of the Lord God." ( To Friends in the Ministry (1656) Friends had a distinctive worship, which Isaac Penington writes of: Our worship is a deep exercise of our spirits before the Lord, which doth not consist in an exercising the natural part or natural mind, either to hear or speak words, or in praying according to what we, of ourselves, can apprehend or comprehend concerning our needs; but we wait, in silence of the fleshly part, to hear with the new ear, what God shall please to speak inwardly in our own hearts; or outwardly through others, who speak with the new tongue, which he unlooseth, and teacheth to speak; and we pray in the Spirit, and with the new understanding, as God pleaseth to quicken, draw forth, and open our hearts towards himself. Thus our minds being gathered into the measure, or gift of grace, which is by Jesus Christ; here we appear before our God, and here our God, and his Christ, is witnessed in the midst of us.

Extractions: The Society of Friends of the Allard Pierson Museum was founded before the Second World War, and supported the museum in the first difficult years. This Society was not able to maintain its status. In 1969 a new Society was therefore founded, which is at present one of the largest societies of musem friends in the Netherlands, with 1800 members. The Society wants to promote the interest of the public for the museum. To this purpose they organize lectures and bring forth publications. They also collect money for new acquisitions and mediate with private collectors who want to loan or give objects to the museum. With the Society's assistance, all kinds of activities can take place in the museum. All who consider themselves friends of the museum and want to support the purpose of the Society, are warmly invited to become a member. Members have free admittance to the museum and receive the Journals of the Society of Friends . Publications of objects from the museum and information on the exhibitions can be found in the journals.
