In 1890, folklorist Charles Leland published a book titled ARADIA; GOSPEL OF THE WITCHES . Although it was typical in many ways of the distorted Christian image of Witchcraft of this period, we do find several things of interest. In Leland's book, Italian witches worship a goddess and a god, meet for full moon rituals and celebrate with singing, dancing and making love. Their celebration also includes a feast containing cakes and wine. In 1609, Francesco Guazzo published several woodcuts in his book Compendium Maleficarum. One of these Italian woodcuts depicts witches gathered inside a circle drawn upon the ground. In 1954, Gerald Gardner describes English Witchcraft in very much the same way. Take a look at some of the topics on this Web Page for other interesting similarities between the Strega Path and Wicca. What is valuable in Leland's book Aradia; Gospel of the Witches is that we find a very interesting view of pre-Gardnerian Witchcraft in Italy. Leland gives an account of Witches who gather nude to worship a goddess and a God when the moon is full. During this celebrate they enjoy cakes and wine, and they sing, dance and make love. For those readers who believe that Gardner invented these concepts, bear in mind that this was written in 1890, over half a century before Gardner's writings.

The mystery teachings and the magickal practices were further developed and refined by the Etruscans, who appeared in Italy around 1000 B.C.E., establishing the great Etruscan empire. The Etruscans were known historically for their great magickal and mystical knowledge. The persecution of Witches in Italy did not become violent until the late 14th century, and even then the Church struck out mainly against organized groups. Solitary village Witches were generally tolerated, continuing the roles of village healer, herbalist, midwife and counselor; thus Italian Witchcraft remained relatively intact throughout the Middle Ages. In Italian, there are different words for witch/magician/sorcerer: Strega (stray - gah) means female witch. Stregone (stray - gonay) means male witch. Mago (mah - joh) means magician and Maga (mah - jah) means sorceress. The Italian words for Witchcraft are Stregheria (stray - gare - e - ah); Stregoneria (stray - go - neer - ee - ah) and Magia (mah - jee ah). The Italian word for coven is Boschetto (boss - ket - oh), which means grove; Selva, which means forest; or Congrega. Today, there are many traditions of Stregheria: Silvani (found in Naples, Florence, Palmero and Messina), Benandanti (found in the Fruili region and in north and northeast Italy), Luperci, Cavellini, Italian Fairy, Sicilian, Nemaic and Trinacrian (found in the US).

Extractions: do not claim to be an expert in Streghe, but wish to emphasize that Italian Witchcraft is NOT Wicca. These religions are completely unrelated. Check it out.. Stregheria celebrate 8 holidays. These seem to correspond with the Wiccan Holidays. This can possibly be attributed to the fact that Charles Leland, a main figure in Wicca, derived many practices from Aradia , which is Italian in origin. The holidays are: La festa dell' Ombra- October 31st Please note that this is intended only to be a demonstration of various "wheels of the year" within various traditions. This is not intended to explain the religion of Stregheria. I am no expert and the religion of Stregheria is complex and multi-faceted. For this reason I have not included an explanation of what each holiday entails. It is also exteremely difficult to find infortaion of this tradition. Information on Italian "style" Wicca abound.. but Stregheria is a religion that is much more family based and is passed in great part orally throughout generations. If anyone who practices Stregheria (not Wicca!) visits this site and can clarify any of my information, please feel free to do so..thanks.

Extractions: (Traditions) A retired British civil servant named Gerald B. Gardner is the 'Grandfather', at the very least, of almost all Neo-Wicca. He was initiated into a coven of Witches in the New Forest region of England in 1939 by a High Priestess named 'Old Dorothy' Clutterbuck. In 1949 he wrote a novel [*High Magic's Aid*] about medieval Witchcraft in which quite a bit of the Craft as practiced by that coven was used. In 1951 the last of the English laws against Witchcraft were repealed (primarily due to the pressure of Spiritualists) and Gardner published *Witchcraft Today*, which set forth a version of the rituals and traditions of that coven. There is an enormous amount of disagreement about virtually every statement I have made in this paragraph. Gardnerism is both a tradition and a family, and lineage is a family tree. The High Priestess rules the coven, and the principles of love and trust preside. We follow our handed down book more carefully than many others, but we are free to add and improvise, as long as we preserve the original. We work skyclad, practice binding and scourging, are hierarchal and secretive, therefore we are controversial. We're also controversial because we were first - the first craft tradition in the U. S. and descended from the man largely responsible for starting the craft revival. So, we're called 'the snobs of the craft', but I think we're as much fun as anyone else; our parties as good, our jokes as bad'

Leland seemed to accept everything Maddalena said as "Gospel" (pardon the pun). Stregheria is secretive, even today. A century ago, it was even more secretive. For those interested in stregheria, read the book by Raven Grimassi, published by Llewellyn.
