For over twenty years, the College of Thelema has published the journals In the Continuum (1973-1996) and Black Pearl (1997-), maintaining high standards in Thelemic education. The Temple of Thelema is a true Outer Order of the Greater Mysteries, providing ceremonial initiation; coordinated and structured training; and regular group work, all in conformity with the principles of The Book of the Law . Editors Note Aleister Crowley (1875 1947) contributed greatly to the "magical revival, as it has been called, during the first half of the 20th Century. His written works have had a profound effect on the practice of Magick. In addition, Satanism , as currently practiced by the Church of Satan and similar groups, have relied heavily on a sensationalistic interpretation of his writings. There are even marks of his influence in the writings of Gerald Gardner, the individual most responsible for the recreation of Wicca circa 1950. Unfortunately, many conservative Christian authors have associated Crowley's beliefs and practices with Mediaeval Satanism. The latter was a form of Satan worship that did not exist in reality. The Christian church invented it in order to provide the theological and legal justification for the Witch burnings of Western Europe. Because of this association, most of the writings by Fundamentalist and other Evangelical Christians about the Law of Thelema and Crowley are hopelessly inaccurate, and may be safely ignored. Extractions: Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Thelema ("THEL-ay-mah") is a Greek word meaning "will" or "intention". It is also the name of a new spiritual philosophy which has arisen over the past several hundred years and is now gradually becoming established worldwide. One of the earliest mentions of this philosophy occurs in the classic Gargantua and Pantagruel written by Francois Rabelais in 1532. One episode of this epic adventure tells of the founding of an "Abbey of Thelema" as an institution for the cultivation of human virtues, which Rabelais identified as being squarely opposite the prevailing Christian proprieties of the time. The sole rule of the Abbey of Thelema was: "Do what thou wilt". This has become one of the basic tenets of Thelemic philosophy today. Although touched upon by various prominent visionary thinkers in the following few hundred years, the seeds of Thelema sown by Rabelais eventually came to fruition in the early part of this century when developed by an Englishman named Aleister Crowley. Crowley was a poet, author, mountaineer, magician, and member of the occult society known as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. In 1904, while travelling in Egypt with his wife Rose, Crowley became inextricably involved in a series of events which he claimed to inaugurate a new aeon of human evolution. These culminated in April when Crowley entered a state of trance and wrote down the three chapters of 220 verses which came to be called

For over twenty years, the College of Thelema has continued to grow and expand, while ever maintaining its high standards of excellence and quality in Thelemic education. Originally composed of one individual campus headed by Soror Meral, the College of Thelema now has several locations throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, with a growing faculty of experienced and dedicated individuals. During the years 1976 through 1996, Soror Meral continually published the bi-annual journal In the Continuum , which features important (and rare) writings by Aleister Crowley, as well as original research and other material. All issues are still in print and available. Beginning in March of 1997, the College of Thelema will begin publication of its new journal, Black Pearl A personal teacher is assigned to each student. Successful completion of Course I is one way to fulfill the A.'.A.'. Student requirement. A combination of instruction techniques is employed, including seminars and classes, written texts, and individual work. The organization of the College is designed with the individual student in mind. Once enrolled, the student works at her own pace, within a two-year time period. The student is expected to determine how much personal instruction she requires, and take the initiative to seek out that instruction by maintaining contact with her teacher and attending classes and seminars.

Extractions: Customs ... Organizations The religion known as Thelema was founded in 1904 by the English poet and mystic Aleister Crowley (1875 - 1947), who is regarded as its prophet. Those who follow the path of Thelema are called Thelemites. The book The Holy Books of Thelema (reference 8, below ), includes most of the books which Thelemites consider to be Crowley's "inspired" texts, and which form the canon of Thelemic Holy Scripture. The chief of these is Liber AL vel Legis, sub figura CCXX , commonly called The Book of the Law . The contents of this book are rather cryptic, and Crowley has prepared a number of commentaries thereto for clarification (most of these are included in reference 3, below ). Thelemites are expected to interpret the book for themselves, based on Crowley's commentaries and other writings; but are enjoined from promoting their personal interpretations to others. However, from the point of view of the Warrior of Thelema, the Principle of War extends beyond physical combat. There can be war on other planes, sort of speaking. There is, for instance, the war with the self, which is The Great War of Initiation In the Thelemic Golden Dawn (T.·.G.·.D.·.) we view Thelemic Initiation itself as a Spiritual War or personal battle with the self/ego/ruach. The Initiate of the Thelemic Golden Dawn is therefore consecrated as a Warrior of Horus, whose only Weapon is the Sword of Thelema , to conquer the real enemy within the self. Even the so-called enemy without is but a symbol for the true enemy within. In our Thelemic Philosophy the enemy without is actually looked upon as a focal point and means for conquering the true enemy within. It is a Spiritual War, an Internal Combat for Self-Control, Self-Liberation and Self-Illumination. The Warrior of Thelema is one who accepts and practices complete responsibility for hir own life. In fact, self-responsibility is a key element and measure of success in our Thelemic Order. Each Initiate is to become completely responsible for hirself via the development of integrity and the strength of character that arises from confronting and surmounting the ordeals, tests and trials suitable to the evolution and progress of hir own unique nature.
