My mom and relatives are against my vegetarianism and concerns for animal rights. My mom does not take me seriously when I try to discuss buying crueltyfree products and not wearing fur and leather. These may include religious reasons (Hindu, Moslem, Buddist, Seventh Day Adventist), health, fad, economic, or moral [against the killing of animals] reasons. Just as people are vegetarians for different reasons, the diets of vegetarians are not all the same. With careful planning, a vegetarian diet can be healthy, no matter which type of vegetarian diet you choose. Let's first define a vegetarian diet. Some people define vegetarianism loosely. They may say they are "almost" vegetarians because they don't eat red meat (but they do eat poultry and fish). However, a true vegetarian is a person who eats no meat. There are two basic kinds: 1. lacto (milk) - ovo (egg) vegetarians: They don't eat any meat, but do eat eggs, milk, and other dairy products such as cheese, butter, and yogurt. Some people are just lacto vegetarians; they eat dairy products, but not eggs. Some are ovo vegetarians; they eat eggs, but no other animal foods. 2. vegan: They do not eat any animal products. In some cases, this includes avoiding honey.

Answer by Damian Moskovitz Many believe that animals have the right to be free from harm by people. In particular, they believe that animals should not be harmed in food production, clothing production, or medical research. This belief is the product of a misunderstanding of the nature of rights. Philosophers like Peter Singer argue that rights are derived from the capacity to experience pain, and since animals can experience pain just as people can, animals also have the right to be free from harm. However, rights are derived from the capacity to reason, and thus people have rights and animals do not. Both people and animals seek values such as food and shelter to sustain their lives. However, they do so by different means. Animals pursue values in their environment automatically. For example, an animal scavenges and finds food around it. People, on the other hand, use their faculties of reason to produce values volitionally. For example, a person can choose to study how plants grow and choose to plant and grow his own food. Moreover, people trade values with each other. For example, if one person grows vegetables and another person weaves clothing, the former can give the latter vegetables in exchange for clothing to their mutual benefit.

Surely factory-farming and the apparatus of mechanised killing, even in their worst excesses, are rarely that bad? No, in a sense the reality is worse . What it feels like for our victims is more terrible than we can typically imagine. In fact, on the few occasions in life when pain that's even relatively severe strikes us down personally, we are shocked. The casual use of the word "pain" evokes only a pale shadow of the frightfulness of the experience that lies behind it. Severe pain really is uniquely awful. Even fewer Americans choose vegan diets that exclude all foods of animal origin. Some scientific studies indicate that vegetarians have lower risks of chronic diseases than do meat eaters. However, some of the apparent benefits of vegetarianism may be attributable to aspects of the vegetarian diet other than the absence of meat or to nondietary aspects of typical vegetarian lifestyles. It is not necessary to give up meat and become a vegetarian to enjoy the benefits of a healthy diet. Vegetarian diets that include dairy products are usually nutritionally adequate, as long as care is taken to include good sources of bioavailable iron and zinc in the diet. Diets completely devoid of animal products (vegan diets) may not be nutritionally adequate unless they are very carefully planned. Vegans should take supplements of vitamin B12 or eat soy products or cereals fortified with vitamin B12. They may also need supplements of vitamin D, iron, zinc, and calcium.

When I first gave up meat, quite a few of my friends and relatives expressed concern; most people seem to have the idea that vegetarian food lacks adequate nutrients. And being vegetarian can be a more than minor inconvenience with the amounts of meat and fish that people now eat. Chinese have a traditional notion that foods that are "warming" in nature, like meat, are important for building up physical strength; so in the minds of some of the older generation, one could not possibly get all the nutrition one needed form the "cool" bean greens, white radishes, and so forth that vegetarians favor. In their book, the only things that strengthen the body are foods like tiger phallus, snake blood, stewed chicken and crab in wine. Before taking the big step, I didn't give nutrition, convenience, or building up physical strength a second thought, since my reason for becoming vegetarian had nothing to do with any of these. I became vegetarian because of my belief in Buddhism. Why do Buddhists advocate vegetarianism? The main reason is "mercy", and because we "cannot bear to eat the flesh of living creatures." And our belief in karma tells us that we must eventually suffer the consequences of our evil actions. A Buddhist sutra says: "The bodhisattva fears the original action; the myriad of living creatures fear the consequences." This means that the bodhisattva knows the seriousness of the consequences and does not do evil things; neither does he think about the causes of bad consequences. Finally, I also believe that a vegetarian diet better enables one to keep a pure body and mind and this purity is an important foundation of self-cultivation. My conversion to vegetarianism was based on these three considerations.
