It's OK to BE an SDA TOO!!!
A very good book, but one must ask, Why On Earth is this even a Statement???I am suspicious of anyone who spends so much time & energy debunking any church.Yes, it's OK to not be an SDA.It's also OK to BE an SDA.I'm a Fifth Generation SDA myself,& have had my ups and downs with The Church too.But it's a healthy thing to question anything that has such a hold on us in a deleterious way.All members of churches that tend to completely take over their members lives need to be aware that they are not prisoners,& the only thing that is holding them there is themselves.The problem is that Mormons, SDA's, Catholics, etc. make the church such an integral part of their life that they cannot leave without also leaving their family, their social network, probably their job as well.Most decide to stay within the web and live that way until they die. But I have chosen to look at the better side of SDA-ism, that is that a)as a church founded on the priciples that there is no Greater Good than doing Free Medical Mission work on a global scale, & that b)every man(&woman)in the church should become a doctor or nurse,& We're going to put you through Med/Nursing school, (as a religion, there are more MD's/dentists & nurses per capita than any other religion on earth), &c)our education system is such that our students score the highest in the national testing, IQ, SAT's, MCATs, etc, &d)our diet/exercise programs have placed us in the Blue Zone where we routinely live to be over 100, & e)no one is watching over you to see if you DO go to church or tithe, or even practice SDA-ism at all, I think that it is a pretty good religion to belong to.I agree that there is a tremendous amount of "stuff" & dogma that goes along with the SDA Education System, but once you realize that most of that is not based on one iota of fact, that much was "borrowed" or surmised in the early days by the "prophetess" EGWhite, that we are in actual fact just an off-shoot of Seventh Day Baptists because Kellogg, a gifted & wealthy physician, had tried to insist that all the Baptist young men become doctors at his med school & when the Baptists resisted vehemently, he decided to form his own religion where he had more control.He simply needed to staff the hundreds of mission hospitals that he was building all over the world with the Kelloggs cereal money. As the "draw" he took the African American "Prophetess" EGWhite, who drew in the crowds by the thousands, & he himself questioned alot of her "revelations."They argued constantly.He wrote his own book about how God is a Loving/kind/Good God, etc.But, in her defense, she insisted that African Americans be educated by the thousands in the SDA schools. Many became doctors & nurses in the early 1900's. Loma Linda University has educated tens of thousands of students from all over the world, the church mans 3000 hospitals & clinics & schools globally.Its incredible when you think about it. So read this book, but don't forget that if you have to belong to a religion, it's probably the best out there.It's a relgion that will Educate you, keep you happy, healthy and Whole.Just please, don't get bogged down in the some of the dogma.I'm proud to be an SDA & I love it.

A great waste of time and money
I am really puzzled why anyone would waste so much time to write a book full of half-truths, mischaracterizations, insinuation and plain falsehoods. SDA people have no political aspirations or power, they are peace loving people engaged in charity and goodwill missions all over the world. Why would anyone care what they preach in their churches? This is a free country. If you do not agree with SDA teachings you don't have to attend their meetings or became a member. If trashing other people belief-system is what some people like to do for fun is fine by me, but remember, for all this, one day you will have to answer to God. You are in my prayers!

I feel sorry for this author!!!
It's very sad that someone can be so disturbed/offended by "someone" and not only completely throw away their faith and the TRUTH that they've been taught but then to mislead others with their own twisted ideas.SDA's are the remnant church and only teach the truth about God's love to the world in order to hasten Christ's 2nd coming.The Seventh-day Adventist church teaches that you're saved by God's grace alone ... not by works - and that by loving and following God, you'll choose to live your life as best you can in God's Way.

It's unfortunate that some people in the church (in any church or organization for that matter) can offend someone or be the one offended ... and this offense result in the teaching that the entire organization is at fault.

Please don't be turned away from the TRUTH ... that Jesus IS coming soon!!!GOD BLESS ALL!!

it's not ok to disregard the truth
You should read this book if you want to feel good or calm your concious about not following the truth. You see, you can read anything you want about the SDA church, you can be part of it for all your life and at the end hate it because you had a bad time with it and left it; the point is not what somebody or some people say about the church, nor what you experienced in this church! it's about the Bible!
Read the Bible, do it by yourself, research it, study it! pray and the truth will set you free!

Total baloney
Slattery's bellyaching is pure phony baloney.I was raised in the Methodist Church and became a Seventh-day Adventist well over 40 years ago.The vast majority of his arguments are completely false, as many others have stated.I don't know what the author's problems are, but he definitely needs some therapeutic help!

Negligible Intellectual Stimulation
As a young Seventh Day Adventist college student I am curious to see what (in this case negative) things are said about my religion. I had hoped to find within this book some intellectually stimulating and well framed arguments that would give me food for thought and study (which I have found elsewhere and therefore know they exist). In stead I found a book written by a disgruntled former Seventh Day Adventist who uses this as his outlet for mud slinging - not only does it not have any well framed arguments but many of the points made in the book are quite slanted not to mention some completely inaccurate "information".

SDA beliefs reviewed
This book is a "no nonsense" review of the beginnings and beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

HA HA
Sometimes I have my doubts about the SDA church and I question about the people not the doctrines of the church. First of all SDA's is a recognized denomination like Baptist, Methodist, Catholics, and etc. Our world headquarters is in the Washington D.C. area so we are recognized by many political leaders and US Presidents. To give you a sign of relief we stay out of the political arena in Washington because we strongly believe in the separation of church and state.

Point B. Heaven will be a place for all people not for a specific religion because there are saints in all religions. Including non Christians, Jews, Catholics, Muslims, Atheists, or people who never heard the word Jesus. PERIOD!

C: Ellen White was a sweet lady who never put her writings above the Bible. Is the peoples fault who twist her writings and that is the main cause for some cultish SDA churches.

D: I was a Roman Catholic including my parents. If we never knew about the SDA church then our health would be different.

To uphold the U.S. Constitution I am not going to force anyone to accept the Sabbath day but here is a reason why I do in a non religious way.
I am a college student and a small business owner. I have stress during the week. I just need one day to set aside everything and relax. Even when I graduate my workload is going to increase because I'll be a professional person. So hey I don't want any chronic diseases.

It's all about his saving grace.
I have not had the opportunity to read the book but I was browsing Amazon and the title and reviews caught my eye. This does not in anyway describe the Adventist church that I have been apart of for 35 of my 39 years. I was educated in in Adventist schools and in my heart I do believe that the adventist church is the remnant church. We do not in any way, shape, or form acknowlege Ellen White over the awesome authority of Jesus christ. We do believe Ellen White to be a prophet, and is definitely inspired, key word, INSPIRED. Ellen White time and time again refers the reader to the holy sciptures. She does not by any means attempt to challenge or belittle the authority of Christ. Yes I do read the writings of Ellen White and I do believe she was a prophet of Christ, and the bible teaches us that we are saved by grace alone so that know man can boast! What an awesome God! In essence, know individual can work his way into heaven, including Ellen G. White. I believe all religious material should be prayfully approached so that the holy spirit can reveal the truth.Perhaps the writer needs to examine himself before writing on a subject that he clearly is clueless about. ... Really Nice
My hymnal came new--black, as opposed to my church's blue ones, which is nice in case I want to bring it to church with me. Don't have to worry about people thinking I'm stealing a hymnal. It's beautiful; I adore singing hymns. I don't remember lyrics well, which is one of the reasons I got it. Really thankful to have it.

This has all the hymns known in the christian community....Amazing Grace, Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus, I surrender all, Rock of Ages....The Old Rugged Cross.I'm a pianist and this has all the music notation for over 500 hymns.This is a hardback.Keep in mind, if you're a pianist it can be hard to keep the pages from turning.I use paper clips or you can also place your bible on one of the edges to keep it from closing.

I like christian music in general, but hymns are very special to me and really make my heart sing.Everytime I play these in piano, I think of my mom, more of reason why I treasure these hymns.
