1-0 out of 5 stars What is a cult?
If Seventh Day Adventists are a cult then Baptist are a cult, Catholics even more so.

Main Entry: cult
Pronunciation: 'k<
Function: noun
Usage: often attributive
Etymology: French & Latin; French culte, from Latin cultus care, adoration, from colere to cultivate -- more at WHEEL
1 : formal religious veneration : WORSHIP(all churchs fall in this category right?)
2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents (same here)
3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents(Who defines orthodox?Do orthodox jews consider other jews as cults?)
4 : a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator (I guess SDA do fall into this category a bit, but most of the health message ideas come from the Bible.)
5 a : great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b : a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion(Some SDA's fall into this category, but not the church as a whole.Again this applies to people that think their church leader is holy. Some TD Jakes followers, Creflo Dollar, and others. All are sinners saved by Grace).

1-0 out of 5 stars The SDA church is not a cult....
Listing the Adventist church as a cult is a BIG mistake and shows total ignorance of the doctrines of the church and Bible.

What's funny is, just because the SDA Church differs with mainline christianity, people like to label them a cult. Jesus was put in the "cult leader" category when He was here on earth...by the "religious" MAJORITY.

I would like to submit that if Jesus were on earth today, the majority of even professed Christians would not want Him preaching in thier church. He would not be welcome because He would preach all 10 of the commandments just as God gave them originally....and that includes seventh day Sabbath (saturday) worship.

The SDA church has only tried to bring people back the the Bible, and what always happens is somebody gets thier toes stepped on because they only want to keep 9 (or less) of the 10 commandments...or they dont want to keep them at all.

Fact is, the majority, both christian and non-christian, will never line up with the Bible teachings. The majority always takes the smooth, easy way. Mainline christianity is not following the Bible and points fingers at those who do.

If you want to see a cult, you need to look at the largest church in existence because it is also the largest cult in existence. This one should be easy for anyone to figure out.

Seventh Day Adventists dont teach anything new, we teach what the church reformers taught...that we need to get back to the Bible and not traditions of men. But christianity at large only wants smooth things.

If you want new age teachings then look at "Left Behind" and the Secret Rapture scenario. This was put out by that "cult" church described in revelation as the "Scarlet Harlot"...the "Mother" church.

This was done as the "counter" reformation, to counteract the damage that was done to that antichrist church of Bible prophecy by those who identified her CORRECTLY as the church of Babylon. And the pitiful thing about this is, Protestants, by and large, are teaching the doctinal heresies of the antichrist while thinking they teach the Bible.

If you want to learn truth you need to look elsewhere besides LaHaye, Jenkins, Hal Lindsay and these others who have Left the Truth Behind in thier books and teachings. It's popular but it's not true...it's like a big silly cartoon.

Try the books by Steve Wohlberg called Truth Left Behind or Left Behind Deception, or Exploding the Isreal Deception.

5-0 out of 5 stars informative
Very well written and researched and most useful to anyone wanting to know all about what various cults believe.

Product Description
Angry Saints is about the people and struggles that existed 100 years ago-and about how the lessons of the past apply to the present. Even though the specific characters and surface issues have changed, most of the problems, opportunities, dynamics, personality traits, and bedrock controversies portrayed in Angry Saints are remarkable contemporary.

The book's four central crises provide perspectives that speak to Adventism a century later with as much force as they should have spoken to our spiritual forebears. Perhaps learning the lessons of Minneapolis even more important today than it was in 1888, since learning and applying that learning seems to be the key to our future.
The book concludes on a positive note-the infinite possibilities of God's saving grace. Those possibilities, not fully grasped as yet, hold the promises of the future. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume includes a facsimile reproduction of Isaac C. Wellcome's 1874 publication History of the Second Advent Message and Mission, Doctrine and People. Wellcome, a member of the Advent Christian branch of Adventists, produced this first general history of the movement that had promoted the belief that the Second Advent of Jesus would take place on October 22, 1844.
Though primarily a historical narrative of the Millerite movement and an important source of information about early Adventism, Wellcome's work also includes much theological discussion. Wellcome's book records his own personal memories and those of others, includes biographical sketches of more than thirty-five Millerite and Advent Christian leaders, and provides quotations and lengthy extracts from other early published Advent materials, many of which no longer exist in original form. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great source of historical information
This book contains a lot of details and stories not contained in other books I've read. It seems to be a facsimile reproduction, so there are little stray dots (dust, etc.) and occasional faded type, but not so much that it is hard to read. It's actually quite a good reproduction. It has a few pictures, but they are kind of the copy-of-a-copy-of-a-copy quality. The best thing about this book is the written content, which I think is well written (if sometimes a bit editorializing) and easy to read and full of stories and facts that are hard to find elsewhere. ... Editorial Review

Product Description

In James K. Humphrey and the Sabbath-Day Adventists, R. Clifford Jones tells the story of this important black religious figure and his attempt to bring about self-determination for twentieth-century blacks in New York City.

Humphrey was a Baptist minister who joined the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church shortly after arriving in New York City from Jamaica at the turn of the twentieth century. A leader of uncommon competency and charisma, Humphrey functioned as an SDA minister in Harlem during the time the community became the black capital of the United States. Though he led his congregation to a position of prominence within the SDA denomination, Humphrey came to believe the black experience in Adventism was one of disenfranchisement. When he refused to alter his plans for a utopian community for blacks in the face of dissent from SDA church leaders, Humphrey's ministerial credentials were revoked and his congregation dissolved. Subsequently, Humphrey established an independent black religious organization, the United Sabbath-Day Adventists.

This book rescues the Sabbath-Day Adventists from obscurity. Humphrey's break with the Seventh-day Adventists provides clues to the state of black-white relationships in the denomination at the time. It set the stage for the creation of the separate administrative structure for blacks established by the SDA church in 1945. This history of a minister and his church demonstrates the struggles of small, independent, black congregations in the urban community during the twentieth century.

R. Clifford Jones is an associate professor at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He is the editor of Preaching with Power and has authored scholarly articles on the emergence of the Sabbath-Day Adventists. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Noble Venture
As a Seventh-day Adventist, I am humbled by James Humphrey's expereince. While he sought to carry the message of Adventism to those in Harlem, he found he could not do it within the framework of the organization due to the prejudice of the day. The church he founded still stands as a testimony to his character. We are also reminded to ask ourselves if such reasons still exist for this church to remain outside the family of churches of the Seventh-day Advenist Church. While this church points others to the Adventist church, let us pray for their continued success as God's children and members of God's one true universal Chruch. May we be truly one. ... Read more
