5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bible for students and young adults
The NIV student bible is a great all around Bible for students and young adults. It's especially well suited for personal study and devotionals, as well as Bible studies and bringing to church. As a college student, I choose the student Bible for my daily reading while using a Study Bible more for reference.

The leather bound edition is very nice, especially as a gift, and will last a good long time.I'd suggest the hardcover if it will be kept in a Bible cover. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start
This study was actually given to me in a beginner Bible Study for adults, those who have never really studied the Bible.Although it is written for 9-12 age it has some great basics about the Bible. It covers what the Bible is, how it came about, it breaks down the Old and New Testament intocatagories, has a great maps, diagrams and charts and even a who's who init.It is a great place to start to find out the basics about the Bibleand how it came to be and what is in it. I am currently leading a class onbasic beliefs and we will use it for teaching. It really is a great placeto get kids to look at the Bible plus have the visual in front of them, thepictures/diagrams help make the stories of the Bible come to life.Thenthey can refer back to it to share with others too! It's nicely done! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Bible I use in Seminary studies
There are a lot of Bibles out there for folks to buy right now, almost as many Bibles as stars in the sky, to use a coined phrase.I have used several different Bibles in the past, but this one is a favorite of mine and one that I recommend to those I know who are looking for Bibles for themselves or others. The reason for that is simple, I like John MacArthur and his style of Bible exploration. He has some very good books out there, not just on Bible prophecy, but on examining and exploring the Christian life. The Bible fits perfectly in a bookbag or a shoulder bag (I use a shoulder bag, which usually has several other books I am studying at that moment). It is not cumbersome or heavy. The translation itself is NKJV which I myself like out of all the translations out there (I'm a bit of a Bible snob, I must admit, due to some errors found in Bibles like the NIV translation or due to dumbed down grammar as found in Bibles like the Message). And while this isn't a Study Bible with deep notes at the bottom half of the page, instead he has sprinkled notes throughout the pages, you still gain a pretty good idea as to the messages found in the particular portion of the Bible you may be reading. All in all, this is an awesome Bible that I highly suggest to anyone who wishes to learn about God's truth and love and grace and holiness.I also highly recommend you check out other books by MacArthur!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic study Bible
My daughter is eleven-years-old, and learning more and more about God. We are reading Little Pilgrim's Progress by Helen Taylor together, and I realized that it is now time for her to have her own Bible. A beloved aunt of mine gave me my first Bible, a bare bones KJV, and I treasure it to this day. But, over the years I was sometimes envious of others' wonderful study Bibles. So, I decided that the Bible I give my daughter would be the best study Bible I can find, one that she can use for her entire life. Well, this is it!

This Bible is the New King James Version, plus a whole lot more. It begins with an introduction to the Bible, chapters on how we got the Bible, how to study the Bible, and a preface to the NKJV. The Old and New Testaments each have a highly informative introduction, and each book of the Bible begins with an introduction that covers Author and Date, Background and Setting, Historical and Theological Themes, and an outline of the book. As if that weren't enough, the book is crammed full of notes, sidebars and references. Plus, the finale of this Bible is a topical index (even better than a concordance in my opinion), and eight color maps!

Whoo! As I hope the above description tells you, this is a fantastic study Bible. It has everything a studious Christian of any age could want. As I hope that my daughter will use this book for many years to come, I went with the hardbound edition. The binding appears good to me, and I think that it is well worth the extra few dollars.

I am very happy with this purchase, and I highly recommend this Bible to everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for All Ages
The word "Student" in the title may lead people to think this is a study Bible for youngsters. Not so!A young person of college age or even high-school age would love it, but so will people in their sixties (cest moi)!It is the one study Bible that is not loaded with 85 percent commentary and 15 percent Bible. It tells you just what you want to know and lets you get on with your reading. The informative longer notes appear only occasionally, and they are complete on one page. The short notes appear in shaded areas and are very valuable. For example, the short note with Luke 22:44 explains Christ's sweating great drops of blood with an excellent explanation of the medical phenomenon known as "hematidrosis."The absence of red-letter type is a relief--too many Bibles now are printed with the red-letter feature. One no longer has a choice, and the red ink is often badly applied or more pink than red and hard to read.MacArthur's Student Bible is easy to live with--very legible large type, but not overlarge, and plenty of white space. The introductions to each book of the Bible are very well done too. This is a gem! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars New American Bible NOT Catholic
I do not consider this bible a Catholic translation. The Greek phrase "thou that wast and remainest most graced" in St. Luke's Gospel is translated as "highly favored" instead of "full of grace."Needless to say, the "most graced" one can be is "full of grace," and the translators' decision to adopt the traditional Protestant translation of this phrase can only be seen as an attempt to downplay Catholic devotion to the Blessed Virgin.

The New Testament has enough inclusive language to make it difficult to read and the inclusive language in the Book of Psalms makes it nearly impossible to get through. In addition, the translators of the Book of Psalms have adopted other stylistic changes that make the Book of Psalms different from the other Old Testament books (e.g., the Book of Psalms reads "sheol" where the other books of the Old Testament read "nether world").

The book of Genesis is the 1970s translation instead of the 1950s translation.Where the 1950s translation read "the earth was waste and void" consistent with the same passage in Jeremiah, the 1970s translation reads "wasteland."The 1970s translation also removes most of the christological references contained in the book of Genesis and preserved in the 1950s translation. The style of the 1970s translation of Genesis is completely different from the other books of the Old Testament and jars on the ears (e.g., "Adam knew Eve" is changed to "had relations with," etc.).

If you can get a Confraternity Edition of the Old Testament and New Testament, I'd use that instead of the NAB.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good NAB
This edition of the NAB is bascically similar to the other editions out there. It's essentially a scaled down St. joseph edition. It contains useful notes, a lectionary, various essays at the end of the Bible onrelevant topics and a pope list (which is actually missing from my SaintJoseph edition). I would recommend this edition for those who don't want tospend the money for the St. joe's edition, or want a paperback copy of theNAB. I will warn you, this is one thick paperback book! A nice Bible whichI use a lot. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars False Doctrine
Who is sovereign -- you or God?This Bible says you are.It says "God has to be given permission to work in this earth realm on behalf of man...You are in control! So, if man has control, who no longer has it? God...God cannot do anything in this earth unless we let him." (p.1178) This is heresy, people.Beware. (I wish I could give it zero stars.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bible!!!
Wow!! This is an amazing Bible. I love that it's called the Word. So much more power in that than Holy Bible. And what about the people who do the commentries! Woo!

Kenneth Copeland, Kenneth E. Hagin, Norvel Hayes, just to name a few! It's just Word Word Word!!

Highly recommended for a bible for people who want the spiritual meat!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Word Study Bible by Harrison House
This is a great Bible and also difficult to find in local Christian book stores in the States.I found it so wonderful to order such Bible on line in a country like South Korea. The Word of Faith, so called in general, is at the beginning stage in this land, so we need the definition of the Word of Faith. This Bible and the attached articles and the convenient scripture marked by many signs on each verse of the Bible give us a concise map to the Word, the essence of the Bible.
I was so surprised at the book.Because it was only 7.99 dollar for paper back, I thought a little pocket size cheap Bible, but it was regular size big Bible.I paid the same Bible at a local store 79.99 dollar! Thank you for provision of this kind opportunity! You are really customer friendly company!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Bible!
I have been using this Bible for well over a year now and I have been very impressed with it. It's always great to have a Bible like this to use and study with. The study notes and information in the back are outstanding!

I also recommend the ministry and teaching materials of Andrew Wommack. He has written the only Bible Commentary I have ever found from a Spirit-filled, charismatic point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great beginner study Bible
I have used several Bibles and translations over the years, and fell in love with this one the first time I saw it.While marketed as a teen study Bible in my local Christian book store, I have found it to be one of the best study bibles that I have ever worked with. The questions in the Margins are relevant and thought provoking. The trivia and background information were interesting and brought the relevant passages alive. My (teen) Sunday school class really enjoyed using my copy in class as this often explained the passage better than our text did.
The NLT is in plain english, easy to read, and easy to understand. We use this translation in our youthgroup, and regular services, to ensure that even those with the most basic grasp of English will understand the scripture.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING
The only Bible I know I have two of.It's that great of a Bible.I have one I keep with me everywhere especially when I'm traveling on official military orders, and then I have the other TQ Bible back home in Orlando with my family. It's a must have Bible for any Christian. It's words are broken down 'barney-style' so everyone can understand it.It has an awesome concordance in the back, so whether it's flipping through the Books for Sunday Sermon, or you want to experience it by yourself on various subjects.I don't like, I absolutely LOVE it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wouldn't trade it for another
I am a 19 year old college student and this Bible is excellent for teenagers and college students alike. If you like to take notes in your Bible like I do, you will love this Bible! It provides plenty of margin room for note-takers.Also in the margins are questions that stir up the mind, but they aren't enough to get in the way if you don't like to use them.Every once in awhile I will refer to these questions but most of the time I write over them.At the bottom of each margin is a key verse which is good for a spice of inspiration throughout the day.Another helpful key is the biographies of the Biblical characters at each mention of his/her name. They are very interesting and stimulating!

This is a perfect Bible to take to church, Bible studies, or homegroups. It is also a good bedtime/morningtime/quiet time Bible.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Little Flimsy
This was one of three new Bibles I purchased over the summer and by far the most disappointing.

Good parts first:
The New Living translation is easy to read.
The Bible has "heft" and feels right in your hands.
Time allocation for reading chapters aloud is a worthy innovation.
Book introductions and biographies are very well done.
Bible lies flat when open -- great for studying other tools.

Disappointments:
This does NOT appear to be related to the Kay Arthur inductive method.

The pages are extremely thin and flimsy and let too much of the next page "through" when reading.Despite being a "mark-up" Bible, I don't think it would be readable for very long if you were a serious marker or note-taker.
Outside of the main text itself, the ink is almost unreadable, especially the key passages in the lower right hand corners of each page (which stack up on top of each other) and the corner notes which are printed on a background that is almost the same color of ink as the text.
There are no maps, etc...

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!Actually gets students excited!
I purchased these books for the students in my Youth Group and they have actually become excited to get in the Word!I thank God for this Bible and the opportunity to meet Steve Keels at the Willow Creek Youth Conference!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to comprehend
I ordered this bible for my 14 year old son who is in confirmation class. He has an NRSV gift bible which he was struggling with.I have the Learning Bible in the CEV edition which I teach bible from and most people I work with find the CEV very refreshing.
The Promise Bible adds all of the cool stuff that student bibles like the Life Application and others have, but it is easier to comprehend than even the NIV which is important for those first studying the bible.I think the CEV also does a better job of keeping with the meaning of the scripture than the bibles I had as a kid like the Good News bible. The research for the CEV is very strong and compares strongly with most commentaries.
I think this is a good bible for teens and a good version for all of us who have a little trouble with the kings english.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Bibles Out There!!!
This Bible is so cool. It's great for 2 reasons.

1. It's the Word Of God, so it's going to be great!2. It's so easy to understand!

I Love this Bible.I use it for my Quiet Times with the Lord every morning! This Bible can change your life!READ IT!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Promise Bible for Students
I bought this Bible two years ago and I love it. It has an appealing cover (and lots of people do judge books that way!). And the inside is truly amazing. It presents the Word of God in a way that makes teenagers want toread this Bible, whether they don't really know the Lord or they alreadyhave an awesome walk with Christ. The inserts (Promise, He, You, What if,etc) are great and they help students understand the Bible better. The 10Challenges and Chacteristics of World Changers are awesome, too. The onlyproblem is this Bible would have been better in an NIV or NRSV version.Still, the CEV is clear and easy to understand. Definately get this Biblefor a teenager or adult!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Bible is awesome!
The Promise Bible for Students is incredible. It's Editor, Ron Luce, the founder of Teen Mania Ministries [Woohoo! :)], has devotional notes used to encourage teens to live righteously and motivates them to take over their schools and Bible clubs with the power of God. This is a Bible that teenscan actually understand and USE. I highly recommend it. God bless! Get this Bible!

4-0 out of 5 stars A not too bad reference tool....
The UBH is fairly informative, and I found the info on the early church and canon formation very helpful. However the theological beliefs of the author creep in a lot. In Revelation, for instance, he only treats thefuturist view of interpretation as worthwhile, while dismissing the otherviews without any real evidence against them. I have found this book wasvery useful when I was a younger Christian, but now it basically sits onthe shelf. I think the NIV Study Bible's notes and package are the betterway to go.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and very thorough
This is the best example of the type of reference work that I could locate.I purchased it at retail price because it was readily available at that time.It has proven somewhat valuable in my research of thescriptures by its coverage of the archaeology and culture of its time. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Wanted to rate it 5 stars, but...
Update:We can now upgrade the book to 5 stars. On Dec. 19, we received another (third) copy of the book. This was apparently the publisher's "response" to our complaint that the second copy of the book had the same problems as the first.Happily, the newest copy no longer had any creases or wrinkles and is quite satisfactory. It was not on glossy paper which made the book thicker.

We are quite pleased with the content of this book and hope many public high schools adopt it as part of their curriculum (we are homeschoolers). We agree wholeheartedly with the Project's intent that a person's education is incomplete without an understanding of the Bible, and its background, purpose, and influence in many facets of life. The quality of the binding, which is poor, led to the lower rating. The pages are all wrinkled and some were even creased. The book does not lie flat. The pages, while glossy compared to usual textbooks, seem fine to us.We did contact the publisher to explain the problem and they kindly sent a replacement; however, it arrived in the same condition.I suggested that the publisher find a new bookbinder, but they did not respond. Our daughter noted that the book would not be "allowed" in a library because turning the pages makes a loud crunching sound.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I returned my copy for 3 reasons. The first reason was the cheap quality of the book.It is printed on flimsy paper identical to furniture or department store flyers one gets in the mail. The pages were not flat when the book was bound, many pages had detectable ripples, and the binding created waves in the crease with each turn of the page. One reviewer referred to it as a "coffee table book."I don't know what he/she was thinking but this book is nowhere near the quality of a typical coffee table book.

I would have been disappointed with the quality after paying $25 for this book. Paying double that is ridiculous and the second reason I returned the book.So far: ZERO stars.

Third, I returned the book because I saw that I wasn't going to use it.After a quick review I believe the book would be useful for any public school wanting to study the enormous 'impact' of The Bible on Western literature and culture without actually reading a Bible. But for any parent or student willing or wanting to read a Bible, this book is a poor choice.Almost any other Bible commentary or other such book would be a better companion for Bible study. As for its impact on Western civilization...once you have first hand knowledge of The Bible the impact is obvious during the study of literature and culture.

I can't say how useful this book might be in public schools but for that purpose I'd give it four stars (not counting the cheap paper). If you're a homeschooling Christian, think long and hard before spending $50 on this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars OK.... but
So when do the school boards also provide textbooks from the other major religions of the world and of other citizens of the US? Seems to be very one-sided unless these other books are in the works. Oh and by the way. How about something that talks about the 14,000,000 citizens of the US who have NO RELIGION at all? How about talking about their contributions to our society as well?

4-0 out of 5 stars A reasonable survey and a positive presentation

I purchased this somewhat expensive but beautifully printed secondary school textbook because of an article which appeared in TIME during March 2007.The article was entitled "The Case for Teaching the Bible".I was encouraged that a book had been produced for the use of Bible in Literature courses in American Public High Schools.

The writers have given a reasonable survey of the contents of the 66 books of the Protestant Canon of Old and New Testaments in the Christian Bible. The presentation is essentially a version without historical critical undertones and without religious overtones. It is strong on the social influence of the Bible in American life.

If one wants the historical critical and religious perspectives there are the standard introductions by such writers as Bernhard Anderson and Lawrence Boadt on the Old Testament and Raymond Brown and David DeSilva on the New Testament.Indeed, if one seeks these perspectives at a similar level to The Bible and Its Influence, I would think that the introductions of John Drane would fill the gaps.

All in all, this is a positive presentation of the Bible that will go a long way to encourage secondary and early tertiary students to read the content of the Bible in a modern English translation with thoughtful understanding of its relevance down through the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Student Text Review
The book is an excellent attempt to cover Biblical principles and theory without using the book to convert or modify the readers present theological beliefs. It is approached from a historical basis and has the purpose to educate the student about the Holy Book called the Bible. It is well written with many interesting facts spread throughout the chapters to peak ones interest. Appears to be well balanced for a book that is trying to stay within guide lines for a public school curriculum. As our society becomes more open to the teaching of basic religious concepts/beliefs in the Holy Books, I can perceive that it would be a key component of a series of suchtexts that included other religions as well or texts that delved deeper into the books major topics(New Testament Study Or The Life Of Jesus etc.). Overall, an excellent beginning to educate without being over zealous .... students of all backgrounds will benefit. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars HCSB and great work!
HCSB! The HCSB is a very promising translation. It reads like the NIV and has the accuracy of the NKJV. This student bible may not qualify as a full-blown study bible (it could use cross-references and more notes) but it is a great work. Conservative & basic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost everything I wanted...
I must say i did a lot of searching before i came to the decision of purchasing this bible.I was looking for something that wouldn't slow me down with old English but that was also true to the original manuscripts.I'm not a bible scholar by any means, but from my experience so far this is the one.Full of pictures, maps, related topics and quotes, it helps with understanding what happened where and when without overdoing it.And is not a young teenie bible where they try to relate everything to problems in school. For me the one thing it was missing is the Apocrypha...noting that there are important historical puzzle pieces found in them...i think it would have been a good idea to include them like early bible editions did, instead of just referencing them. But i found that the pros outweighed the cons and it's worth the small price.I definitely recommend this bible over the KJV or NIV for reasons that you can read about elsewhere.By the way the pages are very thin which i don't mind but others may, the simulated leather is very nice, silver leafed pages, and lays open easily...two thumbs up...hope i don't get sued by Ebert. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Attractive and useful information for deep Bible study

A Bible dictionary is a great investment for those pursuing serious Bible study.Essentially every word you might want to look up from the Bible is laid out in dictionary style - from Abronah to Nicolaitans to Zaphon, each with at least a few sentences, and usually more, to explain what is known about them. There are also more extensive sections on occupations of Biblical times, charts of political parties, parables, weights and measures, maps, time lines and much more.

This Holman dictionary has over 600 illustrations and plenty of photos of landscapes from the Holy Land, etc. There are other good Bible dictionaries available, but this one is the best illustrated and attractively arranged that I know of.The other dictionaries I've seen may have more text per entry, but I find Holman to be completely adequate in this regard. The text is also typeset cleanly so it is easy to read; this is not always the case with other dictionaries. Holman's dictionary is a terrific tool for helping your study come to life in a vivid way.

I would recommend a Bible dictionary even if you have a good study Bible. There is a lot more information in the dictionary than any Bible can really present. Holman's dictionary is keyed to match several popular Bible translations so whichever English translation you prefer, you'll likely find the entries in Holman's to match.Halley's Bible Handbook is also a useful tool for getting a high level overview of information as you study. A Bible handbook does not overlap with the dictionary, they each serve a distinct purpose, but the dictionary is the more valuable of the two if you must choose between them.

May God bless your time in His Word

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Bible Dictionary I Have Seen!
The staff at Holman Bible Publishers have produced a high-quality, well-written dictionary with an easy-to-read format!

Most of the subjects have comprehensive information such as:Bible verse(s) reference, origin, how the subject relates to other Bible subjects and other pertinent info.

Throughout the book are colorful and attractive photos of certain topics (usually geography, buildings, towns, and artifacts of biblical times).

The book is divided into such sections as:1) charts of biblical time lines, 2) scale reconstructions of biblical artifacts (temples, tabernacles, etc.), 3) maps of the biblical lands, 4) Bible backgrounds and culture, and 5) doctrines and ethics.

All in all, a highly recommend read and excellent resource for the pastor, teacher, or student!

4-0 out of 5 stars More than Meets the Eye
This little gem has more than meets the eye.Granted, it is a conservative (but not lacking in information) approach, but avoids the liberal academic pitfalls so often found in their literature (critical analysis etc). This is a user friendly book, thick in size and content is generous. Most of all it comes across trustworthy and reliable, not full of conjecture.A quiet authoritive spiritual treatment without the heavy-handness to go with it.I have used one for years after using many others of the same genre and I prefer Holman's for overall satisfaction after reading it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Low quality book with higher quality content
Do you get what you pay for when you purchase one of the cheaper dictionaries?Yes and no.The book itself reminds you from the moment you open it that it was cheap: the paper is not the best quality around; the book creaks and groans as you page through it (just how long will it be before the spine cracks and breaks?); the quality of the photos is, in general, nothing short of abominable (in the 1960's and 1970's they would have been acceptable).
The dictionary entries are good, if you like conservative biblical scholarship.Reference to various (modern) translations of the bible makes it quite a useful book. But one essential ingredient of a good scholarly work is missing: a bibliography. Of the three dictionaries I know (Eerdmans, HarperCollins and this one from Holman), the Holman is the only one totally lacking any kind of bibliography. For the lay-user maybe not a problem. For an academic user a great problem.I would advise academic users to consider either the Eerdmans or the HarperCollins publications.
For the lay-user this is a useful publication at a good price. For academic users this might be handy to have as a second dictionary but it is, thanks to its lack of a bibliography, unsuitable as a sole work of reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicest book ever seen
Very useful and it has at not least very nice fashion. Nice pictures, a lot of text, historical timelines. I recommend to everyone who studies the Bible. ... Read more
