5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Student Bible
Great Bible for anyone who wants to learn the word of God and simple explanations in plain english. A must own for anyone looking for a great Bible.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not that great!
This bible is ok not as good as the NIV student/ Study Bible and where near the Level of the John McArthur study bible the only benefit is that its from a Charasmatic/Penetoscal slant but definetly lacking in scholarship. It doesn't even have cross refrences which is essential in order compar scripture to scripture in order to have an indepth study of the word. I was disappointed i was looking for Chrasmatic/Pentecostal study bible I got shalow study filled wtih penecostal thought.

This bible is a very awesome study tool for me, I am very glad I purchased this item.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Spirit Filled Bible
This is an awesome Bible for those of us who believe in the power of the Holy Spirit. In other Bibles that I have, some of the comments that are made by the authors, occassionally I don't agree with. But in this Bible, the comments are Biblically based, and come from the perspective of the entire Trinity. All my kids now have one of these Bibles!Awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Translation
I love this translation. I'm giving it five stars because it's such a great translation, but I do want to interject here, before I get started with the important stuff, that "imitation leather" is a . . . hmm . . . generous description of the binding. Don't misunderstand--I love the binding. It's durable and attractive and flexible and looks to be hard wearing. I haven't damaged it yet and I've used it quite a lot. It's just not very leather-like.

Before I bought this bible (I got it at a bookstore) I sat and read most of the Gospel of John, which is a book I know very well. I was nothing but impressed with the ease of reading and yet depth of this translation. My previous favorite, the New King James is still a wonderful translation. I love my Amplified. The RSV is great, but though I'd hate to be without any of them, I love this one best.

I don't read Greek or Hebrew, so I certainly can't give a commentary on the accuracy of the translation except as compares to other well-spoken-of translations, but in that regard I would say it shines. It says the same things with usually pretty much the same implications, only it says them in a way that's instantly easier to grasp. (For me, anyway.)

It's not that I can't understand the others--even the AV, but they take more work and don't really provide any more meat so far as I can tell. Since it's going to take any of us quite a lot of time to individually parse each verse of the Bible, meditate on them all, look up the Strongs definitions of the key words, write our own commentaries, it's nice to have a translation like the HCSV that is a little more accessible.

My only complaint (and it's a biggie) is the lack of the cross-references so abundant and helpful in my NKJV. (Maybe there are more in other editions, but they're missing in the Student Bible.) There are references, but they're of the sort where they tell you which OT passage Paul is quoting. That's good to have, but I like to have cross-references to other related passages. Otherwise I need several books strewn around, balancing on the arm of the chair, etc. It's just inconvenient.

I'm looking forward to seeing the HCSB become available in other editions with more general commentary and better research helps included. Meantime, I'm enjoying my HCSB and highly recommend it to anyone.

Grace and Peace,

Cindy

4-0 out of 5 stars HCSB and great work!
HCSB! The HCSB is a very promising translation. It reads like the NIV and has the accuracy of the NKJV. This student bible may not qualify as a full-blown study bible (it could use cross-references and more notes) but it is a great work. Conservative & basic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost everything I wanted...
I must say i did a lot of searching before i came to the decision of purchasing this bible.I was looking for something that wouldn't slow me down with old English but that was also true to the original manuscripts.I'm not a bible scholar by any means, but from my experience so far this is the one.Full of pictures, maps, related topics and quotes, it helps with understanding what happened where and when without overdoing it.And is not a young teenie bible where they try to relate everything to problems in school. For me the one thing it was missing is the Apocrypha...noting that there are important historical puzzle pieces found in them...i think it would have been a good idea to include them like early bible editions did, instead of just referencing them. But i found that the pros outweighed the cons and it's worth the small price.I definitely recommend this bible over the KJV or NIV for reasons that you can read about elsewhere.By the way the pages are very thin which i don't mind but others may, the simulated leather is very nice, silver leafed pages, and lays open easily...two thumbs up...hope i don't get sued by Ebert. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I read this One Minute Bible to my teen daughter every night, and we discuss what is being said and how it relates to her life today. It is my one tool I can use to stay connected with her.She needed story time when she was little, well you know what?As a teen, she still needs that time to bond.It is great for those new to reading the bible and those who need to hear the Word.Simple, day to day scripture that you can apply to your life!Get it, it is great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great start up for young Christians
This is a great start-up just to get new Christians in the habit of being in the Word daily. It will give them a hunger for more of the Word.Too many times a young Christian starts out reading the Bible, but becomes frustrated because it is not understood or "boring" to them....Although I do understand that the Holy Spirit will bring understanding, this helps still, to bring some council with scripture...

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad leather

I bought this bible for my boyfriend, and he really likes it. Besides it having really useful articles and a reading guide, it's a very shiny silver on the tips of the pages. It also has a useful ribbon book mark. The pattern on the front is unique and appropriate for either a man or a woman, not too feminine or masculine.

This is a great book to Answer those questions that a lot of people have about God and the Bible. The Author, Hank Hanegraaff, has got to be one of the most respected bible scholars of our day. He is the president of the Christian Research Institute, and hosts a nation wide radio broadcast called, "The Bible Answer Man", where Hank answers questions that callers have about God/Bible. While Hank has produced a Complete Bible Answer Book, this one is more tailored for Students. It focuses on the most common questions that teenagers are curious about. This book can be a powerful witnessing tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem for Christians and unbelievers
This book is a wonderful resource containing valuable information for believers and those who are not yet followers of Christ. It provides answers to questions that plague the mind in this "world view" state that we find ourselves in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for mature kids
This book is something that is very necessary to give to today's christian teens (or any teen for that matter) who are asking the tough questions. I have Hank Hanegraaffs bible answer book volumes 1 and 2 and noticed that a good sampling of the same question and answers are presented here, suited for the kinds of questions that pop into teenagers minds. One thing I would note is that I find the book to be more suited for mature teenagers who are at least 16 and older. I have found that some of the answers given are too hard to grasp for some early teens 13, 14 years old. Overall, a great bible answer book to give as a gift to any teen or college student in the family.

4-0 out of 5 stars Prompt, correct, slightly damaged from manufacture
I ordered 4 new books, 2 were perfect but the other two had some sort of manufacture rubber glue on the edges of the pages. I was able to open each page carfully and separate them but it would have been nice to have them without residue. The residue doesn't come off but the book can be used.

The content of the book is fantastic. It is a nice little pocket size practical guide for common questions regarding what the Bible says about current and classic questions. I gave them to 3 teenagers and one young adult--well received. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars New American Bible NOT Catholic
I do not consider this bible a Catholic translation. The Greek phrase "thou that wast and remainest most graced" in St. Luke's Gospel is translated as "highly favored" instead of "full of grace."Needless to say, the "most graced" one can be is "full of grace," and the translators' decision to adopt the traditional Protestant translation of this phrase can only be seen as an attempt to downplay Catholic devotion to the Blessed Virgin.

The New Testament has enough inclusive language to make it difficult to read and the inclusive language in the Book of Psalms makes it nearly impossible to get through. In addition, the translators of the Book of Psalms have adopted other stylistic changes that make the Book of Psalms different from the other Old Testament books (e.g., the Book of Psalms reads "sheol" where the other books of the Old Testament read "nether world").

The book of Genesis is the 1970s translation instead of the 1950s translation.Where the 1950s translation read "the earth was waste and void" consistent with the same passage in Jeremiah, the 1970s translation reads "wasteland."The 1970s translation also removes most of the christological references contained in the book of Genesis and preserved in the 1950s translation. The style of the 1970s translation of Genesis is completely different from the other books of the Old Testament and jars on the ears (e.g., "Adam knew Eve" is changed to "had relations with," etc.).

If you can get a Confraternity Edition of the Old Testament and New Testament, I'd use that instead of the NAB.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good NAB
This edition of the NAB is bascically similar to the other editions out there. It's essentially a scaled down St. joseph edition. It contains useful notes, a lectionary, various essays at the end of the Bible onrelevant topics and a pope list (which is actually missing from my SaintJoseph edition). I would recommend this edition for those who don't want tospend the money for the St. joe's edition, or want a paperback copy of theNAB. I will warn you, this is one thick paperback book! A nice Bible whichI use a lot. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
We used this for a Bible Study at our church. It was very good! Highly recommended. We received compliments about the book from everyone who took the class. Very helpful leader guide with a lot of activities and information to choose from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Training to Serve
Our church liked this book so much that we are going through it again. We had to purchase more of them. This book is very good in it training for service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Training for Service Used With Adult Class
I was familiar with early editions of this book from my mother, who took the course for teacher training many, many years ago. When I began teaching a Sunday School class for adults in our Presbyterian church, I realized this would give the class a great beginning for understanding the Bible. That was about five years ago. We all worked hard memorizing the Bible organization and the books of the Bible as well as all the other well-organized studies.

I am extremely pleased to say that the knowledge gained through this course has been the foundation of growth for several years. Last year, the class undertook reading through the Bible in a year; they challenge me, as the teacher, to keep on growing with the class. This class of adults has progressed from the stage of being barely interested in the scriptures to being the most knowledgable in the church. I credit this book for providing the basic tools for Bible study and for stimulating our interest in further study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Training for Service
A great resource for Christians to develop a base of knowledge about the Bible and its importance to the world. Very thorough and instructive. I use it to teach our teenage class.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting to know the difference from the Old & New Testament
Our Bible School consists of Old, young adults and young people. This book is enjoyed by them and is good in relating, the understanding of the entire Bible. It separates the two yet correlates them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great beginner study Bible
I have used several Bibles and translations over the years, and fell in love with this one the first time I saw it.While marketed as a teen study Bible in my local Christian book store, I have found it to be one of the best study bibles that I have ever worked with. The questions in the Margins are relevant and thought provoking. The trivia and background information were interesting and brought the relevant passages alive. My (teen) Sunday school class really enjoyed using my copy in class as this often explained the passage better than our text did.
The NLT is in plain english, easy to read, and easy to understand. We use this translation in our youthgroup, and regular services, to ensure that even those with the most basic grasp of English will understand the scripture.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING
The only Bible I know I have two of.It's that great of a Bible.I have one I keep with me everywhere especially when I'm traveling on official military orders, and then I have the other TQ Bible back home in Orlando with my family. It's a must have Bible for any Christian. It's words are broken down 'barney-style' so everyone can understand it.It has an awesome concordance in the back, so whether it's flipping through the Books for Sunday Sermon, or you want to experience it by yourself on various subjects.I don't like, I absolutely LOVE it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wouldn't trade it for another
I am a 19 year old college student and this Bible is excellent for teenagers and college students alike. If you like to take notes in your Bible like I do, you will love this Bible! It provides plenty of margin room for note-takers.Also in the margins are questions that stir up the mind, but they aren't enough to get in the way if you don't like to use them.Every once in awhile I will refer to these questions but most of the time I write over them.At the bottom of each margin is a key verse which is good for a spice of inspiration throughout the day.Another helpful key is the biographies of the Biblical characters at each mention of his/her name. They are very interesting and stimulating!

This is a perfect Bible to take to church, Bible studies, or homegroups. It is also a good bedtime/morningtime/quiet time Bible.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Little Flimsy
This was one of three new Bibles I purchased over the summer and by far the most disappointing.

Good parts first:
The New Living translation is easy to read.
The Bible has "heft" and feels right in your hands.
Time allocation for reading chapters aloud is a worthy innovation.
Book introductions and biographies are very well done.
Bible lies flat when open -- great for studying other tools.

Disappointments:
This does NOT appear to be related to the Kay Arthur inductive method.

The pages are extremely thin and flimsy and let too much of the next page "through" when reading.Despite being a "mark-up" Bible, I don't think it would be readable for very long if you were a serious marker or note-taker.
Outside of the main text itself, the ink is almost unreadable, especially the key passages in the lower right hand corners of each page (which stack up on top of each other) and the corner notes which are printed on a background that is almost the same color of ink as the text.
There are no maps, etc...

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!Actually gets students excited!
I purchased these books for the students in my Youth Group and they have actually become excited to get in the Word!I thank God for this Bible and the opportunity to meet Steve Keels at the Willow Creek Youth Conference!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple yet concise
I was looking for a scripture by scripture commentary I could use with my current bible since I didn't want to have to buy a study bible. I teach a bible study class and although I prepare my lessons ahead of time I wanted something that I can bring with me to class for those occasions that I'm asked about a particular scripture. Most commentary's are huge books and aren't easy to carry around. This book fits my needs perfectly. It's small enough to carry with my bible without being over burdened yet is informative. Granted you can get commentary's with a lot more scriptural insight but if you need quick, clear answers (just like the cover says) this book does the job.

Another reason I liked this commentary is that it can be used with all modern translations. It is not written specifically for any one bible translation. This was also important to me since I use the NRSV and I find it near impossible to find reference material specifically for this translation.

For each bible book this commentary gives a short little introductory paragraph that explains the theme or purpose of that particular book. The color photographs are enjoyable, easy to see and adds to the charm of this commentary book. The maps in the back are simple but also easy to see lending to their ease of use.

A wonderful commentary book that is simple, informative and user friendly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Study Bible
This study Bible is outstanding.I've searched extensively for a great Study Bible, and this is the best one I've found.Where many Bibles can seem intimidating, this one is very inviting, and I often find it difficult to put it down.I never knew where to start when thinking about studying Scripture or where to find the passages I needed. This all changed with this Bible.

The text is very well presented with all verse numbers out to the side. Each verse starts fresh on a new line which makes finding the verses very easy.I do not like Bibles with the verse numbers buried in the text.Since this Bible is in the New King James Version translation (which is very widely accepted), you can be confident in the accuracy of the Scripture.

There are many study guides throughout the Scripture that explain difficult, important, and otherwise key verses. The best part about these study guides is the way they refer the reader to other verses in Scripture that speak to similar issues. You can have your own study of a topic by following these references. Each book of the Bible has an introduction about when it was written, who wrote it, why it was written, and a summary of its contents. This version also does an excellent job of defining the Hebrew or Greek origins of common English words used in the faith.

There are also several Bible studies in the front of the book that are excellent.I've looked a long time for great study Bibles to give to friends, family, and new believers. This one is by far the best one I've found.Mine is tattered, but I don't think I would ever give it up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Word Made Real
I got this Bible for a Pastor I know in a nursing home.
    He absolutely loves it!
It's got teachings in it from some of the best Word teachers on the planet.
    This is an excellent Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Word Study Bible
This is an awesome Bible, I love the prayers that are included as well as the study helps.I highly suggest this Bible for anyone who wants to grow closer to God and develop a deeper knowledge ofand relationship with God.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but . . .
This Bible has one major failing: there is no cross-referencing in the text to other Bible verses. Usually in the King James Version Bibles the references are either at the end of the verse or in a center column. In this Bible, if the NT text refers to an OT verse, for example, there is nothing to tell you where the OT verse is. Disappointing. If it had the cross-references, I would have given it 4 or 5 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars False Doctrine
Who is sovereign -- you or God?This Bible says you are.It says "God has to be given permission to work in this earth realm on behalf of man...You are in control! So, if man has control, who no longer has it? God...God cannot do anything in this earth unless we let him." (p.1178) This is heresy, people.Beware. (I wish I could give it zero stars.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bible!!!
Wow!! This is an amazing Bible. I love that it's called the Word. So much more power in that than Holy Bible. And what about the people who do the commentries! Woo!

Kenneth Copeland, Kenneth E. Hagin, Norvel Hayes, just to name a few! It's just Word Word Word!!

3-0 out of 5 stars I recommend the Leaders Guide instead
I lead a small group and they used the student book and i had the leaders guide. If you group is average or above in intellegence or your studing this alone, I recommend the Leaders guide.Much more information that allows someone to dig deeper into the study.Excellent study.A lot of growth came out of our group.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good outline; but more content would have made it a better resource.
I have used Dr. Neil Andersen's book (and accompanying study guide)Victory of the Darkness in other small groups; so I was excited to try this new study designed for small groups.Overall, I appreciate his committment in this study guide to a biblical theology of sanctification (and the Pauline concept of "in Christ").This study has much value for both new believers and those who have been following Christ for a while. My only criticism is that I think that there could have been more content in each chapter where the key concepts are explained. Both Andersen's Victory of the Darkness and Bondage Breaker are valuable resources; and I was hoping that this study guide would feature more of the great teaching that are in those books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New American Bible
I purchase this as a gift for an elderly gentlemen who was using an outdated bible. The bible arrived in excellent condition.I am totally satisfied with Amazon and the vendor.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm somewhat disappoionted.
I was looking for the New American Bible, 1970, and what I received was a more recent edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Print too small
Content is great, but it should be a pleasure to pick up and read.Unfortunately, the print is so small that it discourages me from reading it.
The study notes are an even smaller print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best budget NAB
This is IMO the best edition of the NAB for under $10. If youare inclined to read your Bible while having your lunch or where theres kids playing, then you will not want to use an expensive leather bound edition costing $$ - I've learned this by experence!

For such a cheap price, this paperback stands upto a lot of use, I've had one for 17 years of regular use, ( you should cover it with plastic adhesive book covering).

So overall full 5 stars, highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Catholic Study Bible
This is the official translation of the Bible that is used by the Catholic Church in the United States and several other English-speaking countries. The aim of this translation has been to make the Bible more accessible to the modern readers, especially in the context of liturgical use. In that respect the translation has been fairly successful: the language used is standard modern English with North American usage, most of the terminology is straightforward, and many obscure terms and references have been reworded in order to get the basic meaning across. However, this updating of the translation has come at some cost: many passages that have become familiar to the generations of English speakers in their more archaic forms have lost a lot of their punch. The language is less powerful and poetic, and lacks a lot of strength and conviction of some other translations. On several occasions the choice of words and phrases comes across as motivated more with the current political sensibilities, rather than with clear meaning of the particular passage.

One of the best features of this edition is the ample commentaries. There is a page or two of introduction to each book of the Bible, and every page is filled with footnotes. There are in fact many pages where there are as many footnotes as there is text. This may be a bit of detraction if you are just using this Bible for devotional reading, but even then it is useful to have easy and accessible references if you come across some obscure or puzzling passage. However, the best use of this Bible is for study or small discussion groups. That's where ample references really come in handy. Furthermore, all of the footnotes and explanations are consistent both with the most current biblical scholarship and the official theological stance of the Catholic Church. Nonetheless, I feel that in some instances the commentators tend to be unduly apologetic for particular more politically incorrect passages.

The overall quality of this book is actually pretty low: the paper is cheap, and the binding extremely fragile. If you use this book frequently, be prepared for pages to come out. This has its advantages, however, as you will probably not feel too reticent to write comments or highlight passages. This again works in favor of using this book more for study than for devotional reading.

If you are a Catholic living in the United States or any other country that uses this Bible translation in its liturgy, I would strongly recommend getting your own copy of this wonderful book. It is a useful and necessary tool for deepening your faith in communion with your fellow believers. ... Read more
