Product Description
In 1829, David Walker, a free black born in Wilmington, North Carolina, wrote one of America's most provocative political documents of the nineteenth century; An Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World. Decrying the savage and unchristian treatment blacks suffered in the United States, Walker challenged his "afflicted and slumbering brethren" to rise up and cast off their chains. His innovative efforts to circulate this pamphlet in the South outraged slaveholders, who eventually uncovered one of the boldest and most extensive plans to empower slaves ever conceived in antebellum America. Though Walker died in 1830, the Appeal remained a rallying point for many African Americans for years to come. In this ambitious book, Peter Hinks combines social biography with textual analysis to provide a powerful new interpretation of David Walker and his meaning for antebellum American history.Little was formerly known about David Walker's life. Through painstaking research, Hinks has situated Walker much more precisely in the world out of which he arose in early nineteenth-century coastal North and South Carolina. He shows the likely impact of Wilmington's independent black Methodist church upon Walker, the probable sources of his early education, and-most significant-the pivotal influence that Denmark Vesey's Charleston had on his thinking about religion and resistance. Walker's years in Boston from 1825, his mounting involvement with the Northern black reform movement, and the remarkable underground network used to distribute the Appeal, all reconstructed here, testify to Walker's centrality in the development of American abolitionism and antebellum black activism.Hinks's thorough exegesis of the Appeal illuminates how this document was one of the most startling and incisive indictments of American racism ever written. He shows how Walker labored to harness the optimistic activism of evangelical Christianity and revolutionary republicanism to inspire African Americans ... Read more

David Walker was all but forgotten until his "Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World" was republished in the 1960s.Now, Peter Hinks has uncovered most of what can be known about the fiery publicist and activist. The "Appeal" is a profoundly radical polemic. It exposes America's racial and religious hypocrisy, directly countering Thomas Jefferson's critique of African Americans while refuting timeworn Biblical strictures."Afflicted Brethren" deftly reveals Walker's little-known early life in North and South Carolina, and also adds detail about his final years in Boston.Even Hinks's prodigious research cannot create a full-length biography of this thinly-documented figure, but he provides valuable context on the burgeoning resistance to slavery and Walker's role in inspiring it.He also tackles the issue of Walker's sudden death in 1830, concluding that despite Southerners' hatred and incitement to murder, he almost certainly died of illness."The Appeal" is both timely and timeless, raising crucial unresolved questions about American society.Hinks has also edited a recent version of Walker's "Appeal," and it is perhaps the best available. The moving prose of V. Harding's "There is a River" covers Walker and many other freedom fighters. ... Read more

Product Description
he Least Of These My Brethren presents a harrowing, compelling look into the daily life of a dedicated attending physician in New York City's largest designated AIDS center. Dr. Baxter recounts heart-wrenching and graphic stories with humanism, dignity, and decency.Amazon.com Review
In the decade and a half that AIDS has been with us, Americans' attitudes about the disease and those afflicted with it have largely been shaped by films such as An Early Frost and Longtime Companion, the plays The Normal Heart and Angels in America, and the overwhelming symbolism of the AIDS quilt. For the most part, these expressions of popular culture focus on a fraction of the AIDS population, those sufferers who are easiest for mainstream Americans to identify with. Dr. Daniel Baxter puts a new face on the AIDS crisis in The Least of These My Brethren, a chronicle of the years he spent treating patients at the Spellman Center for H.I.V.-Related Diseases at St. Clare's Hospital in downtown Manhattan.

Baxter's patients are drug addicts, prisoners, and prostitutes, people with already broken lives for whom AIDS is just one more trouble to add to the list. There is nothing noble or cinematic about these victims. As they file through the halls and wards of the Spellman Center, Baxter describes their ailments that: AIDS-related lymphoma, rectal bleeding, tuberculosis, and much, much more. Baxter notes in his preface that "We are all ultimately H.I.V. positive in this cumbersome experience called life;" in other words, death is our common fate, the experience that unites even the most disparate individuals. In this shared inevitability, even the most fortunate among us can find empathy for the least. ... Read more

This book is not only very well written and extremely interesting and enlightening, but it's one of the best books I've ever read in my 60 years of life.I would like to believe that it helped me to become a much more compassionate person over the past 10 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story You'll Never Forget
I read Dr.Baxter's book a few month's ago, and I was so impressed by what a wonderful book it is, that I could hardly believe it! I thought it would be another story about AIDS that makes you feel horrible about disease in the world, but I was blessed to discover that a book about such an awful illness could be so uplifting. The author of "The Least of These My Brethren" has seen and dealt with AIDS patients first-hand in a disgusting hospital where AIDS patients seem to have been placed as to cover them and keep them from the public- a way to hide how awful AIDS is. Dr. Baxter is brutally honest about the illness and all the pain it brings. Yet he has somehow managed to take the misery and show you a lighter side that fills you with hope and peace. It's a very well written story that the world should all share. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good read for Pirates of the Caribbean fans
This was a pretty good book for fans of the Pirates series. It had an entertaining story and was a quick read. However it was a bit confusing because it picked up pretty far into the future after the young Jack Sparrow series by the same author, and it felt like something was missing in between the two series.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Legends Begin...
Rob Kidd delivers a fairly decent entry into his growing collection of books spun off from the ever-popular PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films. THE CARIBBEAN, book one in his newest series, LEGENDS OF THE BRETHREN COURT, definitely gives fans something to enjoy until the next piratical film. The writing moves along very swiftly, but not so much that story-building and some minimal character development happens.

This first volume focuses in on a mysterious new villain, the Shadow Lord, who has control over an army of shadows that will destroy anything in their path. He plans to use this army to get rid of the nine pirate lords and then bring the seven seas under his control. In the meantime, Jack Sparrow has command of The Black Pearl, and is eager to begin a new chapter in his pirating life. Throw in some subplots about Tia Dalma, a Spanish princess, and the snarky pirate Barbossa, and you've got some definite material for a good read.

This series does tie in somewhat to Rob Kidd's previous pirate books in the JACK SPARROW series, and while it's not required to have read those before THE CARIBBEAN, they definitely shed some light on characters from those books who come into play here. Added in the story are some footnotes that help to remind the reader (without giving anything significant away) about the events of the previous 12 books in the JACK SPARROW series. This volume is also longer than any of those were, which I liked a lot. The JACK SPARROW books are so short they're almost like a snatch of air, whereas THE CARIBBEAN has a little more meat to it.

Hopefully, the rest of the series continues along a similar vein...

5-0 out of 5 stars Travelogue through history
In "Crusade", Robyn Young takes the reader across vaste spaces where legendery empires battled for control of the Holy Land. Legendery and historical, backed by detailed research, but not out of date the novel leaps from the page because Robyn's fresh, modern language and descriptions of multicultural cities resonate with modern experience of the world village. Through the concerns of her vividly drawn characters, she focuses on the tangled web of international relations and seeks to make sense of efforts for peace.

Will Campbell, the mature hero drawn from "The Brethren", his mentors and associates from the Amini Templi, the Jewish quarter and within the ranks of the Mamlukes, desparately seek peaceful co-existence in the face of a power struggle between religions that reverberates today. Though the characters are hindered by distance and difficulties of communication, the writer's skill in moving the narrative from viewpoint to viewpoit in diverse famous citadels creates fast paced, visual action that left me thrilled by the scope of the narrative.

Sadness and disillusionment arise from the interface of major characters caught up in these events to their own danger and disadvantage adding another layer of realism to the book.

I recommend "Crusade" to readers who seek to understand conflict, at whatever level: personal, cultural and international. For all those who were fascinated by "The Da Vinci Code" or any other work dealing with the Grail, this novel builds awareness of the background to these popular conspiracies. Indeed, for all who enjoy an epic read with the promise of more to follow Robyn Young's "Crusade" is a good choice

5-0 out of 5 stars Wild Waters is a Wild Ride
My 11 yr old son has been interested in Rob Kidd's POTC and Young Jack Sparrow Series for 2 years now. It took us several years to find books for him to read that kept his interest. This series and the Young Jack Sparrow Series have done that. In his words Wild Waters was packed full of fun and excitement and he cant wait for the next one to come out. His level of reading is age appropriate and this series is getting a tad "easy" for him but the story and plot lines encourage his imagination. He and his friends are all reading them now (thank heavens we have the whole series which we've loaned out to 3 of his friends) and then they acted out the various scenes and made up new ones all summer long. He reads for 20-30 min at night before bed and some nights trying to get him to put it up to sleep is a chore. They are a great series of books as Ive said, even dad and I enjoy reading them so that we can ask him questions and be able to identify with something he enjoys. ... Read more

Product Description
On the Backroad to Heaven is a unique guidebook to the world of OldOrder Anabaptist groups. Focusing on four Old Order communities--the Hutterites, Mennonites,Amish, and Brethren--Donald B. Kraybill and Carl Desportes Bowman provide a fascinatingoverview of their culture, growth, and distinctive way of life. Following a general introduction toOld Order culture, they show how each group uses a different strategy to create and sustain itsidentity. The Hutterites, for example, keep themselves geographically segregated from the largersociety, whereas the Brethren interact more freely with it. The Amish and Mennonites are morealike in how they engage the outside world, adopting a complex but flexible strategy ofcompromise that produces an evolving canon of social and religious rules. This first comparativestudy sketches the differences as well as the common threads that bind these groups together. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on some of the most interesting peoples around
As a person always curious about lifestyles different from my seemingly mundane existince in suburban Melbourne, the Amish and Old Order Mennonites, with their resistance to technology and extremely gentle and peaceful beliefs, have always fascinated me.

Although other books, such as the "People's Place" series, actually offer a good deal of useful information about specific topics relevant to the Old Order Anabaptist groups, "On the Backroad to Heaven" is the best general work I have read about them. It goes into very good detail into the character and nature of the Hutterites, Old Order Mennonites, Amish and Brethren, including all the aspects that are well-known but also some of their rituals and methods of electing leaders that are little-known yet intriguing (e.g. the use of "lots"). More than that, "On the Backroad to Heaven" not only characterising them but also offering clear and easy-to-read comparisons. At the same time "On the Backroad to Heaven" shows not traces of trying to idealise these groups and expresses very clearly the problems they have coping with a modern world that is in many ways very hostile to the values they hold dearly. Its last part clearly shows how far removed they are from a "postmodern" culture, but yet shows what they have to offer thereto.

On the whole, this is really good work. It is neither biased nor shallow, yet is extremely accessible. I would recommend it to anybody interested in cultural studies, even if not in Anabaptist groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good finish, misses a few points
The book does a good job of surveying the four groups, and finishes up very strongly when considering the similarities in the groups.

The contrast between the Mennonites and Amish is also very interesting. It is also perhaps the most accurate portion of the book--although he picked some fairly liberal old order Mennonite groups to describe. It would have been a little better to have picked a more traditional Mennonite group.

It is perhaps at its weakest when describing the old order German Baptist Brethren. There are some very embarassing inaccuracies, including garbled German Baptist vocab (referring to family devotions as "taking the text"--a term that refers to the main sermon on Sunday for example) and considering certain very exceptional cases to be representative (a GB cheerleader, who he doesn't reveal had a parent outside the church). The glaring omission in the German Baptist section has to be that down to details such as order of worship and attitude they are extremely similar to the old order Amish--so much so that the two have cooperated on education in the past.

I also found the section on gender strife among the Hutterites to be a little overstated.Hutterites wouldn't see the conflict the way Americans do, or the way the authors do.

Enjoyed it a great deal.

3-0 out of 5 stars All things considered, a decent work
As the subject line suggestions, I consider this is a fairly nice piece of work. The author does a good job of giving an overview of the four different Old Order groups covered in the book.

Though the author was slightly slanted in favor of some of the Old Orders (Brethren & Amish mainly), this book had neither the rose-colored fluff or scathing condemnation of other publications. There was a description of what worked, what didn't work, what was pious and what was wrong with all four groups.

I would like to have know more intricate detail of each of the group's theology rather than a few snippets of scriptural interpretation and comments from church fathers. I do, however, understand that this book is more of a sociological survey than a theological analysis.

The last few chapters did engage in a repetitious rehash of what has already been covered. I also did find a few typographic errors that didn't get caught by the editor.

Final analysis: If you are new to studying any of these groups, this could certainly would play as a good jumping-off point for further study. If you need to get a quick overview of the groups mentioned, this would also serve your purpose. A more thorough study, however, will require additional reading and research.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking overall, but decent intro to 4 Old-Orders
I found the first few chapters interesting in which the authors profile each of the 4 featured Old-order groups. However, the editing was distracting because the same point was made multiple times in each chapter (in addition to a couple typos). The last couple chapters compare and contrast the 4 groups, but not much new is added I didn't already get in the first chapters.I wish they had touched upon the more progressive branches in each group, comparing Old-order to more modern counterparts, but there was almost no mention of them. Also, the few facts I did know about Old-Orders before reading this book were not discussed (if these are common misconceptions and not facts, they still deserve space in this book).I still give it 3 stars because I was very interested in the descriptions and brief histories of each group.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amish, again and again
Donald B. Kraybill has either written or been a co-author to about 22 books at last count. Most have been about the Old Order Amish and I wonder why? It's always the same old thing, they're misunderstood and they want to be left alone(except when they need a phone or van to ride in). They won't serve in the military because of their beliefs and shy away from the English(everyone not Amish)law because maybe they have something to hide. They bann, excommunicate, and shun anyone who leaves this backward, traditional cult to find a better life. Why so many books on the same old subject? I was hoping for something more realistic because newspapers have confirmed they have problems and there's no way that these poeple can all be so good. I want to read the truth, the facts, the real story, not the HOLLYWOOD version of the Amish. Please, tell it like it is and don't tell any more stories on the so-called "American Heritage." I gave this book 3 stars because it is informative and educational and I believe that D.B.Kraybill is a good writer, but just excludes certain facts. Whatever the reason, he might believe he's their protector. ... Read more

Investigating the Exclusive Brethren—an obscure religious sect that burst onto the Australian political stage in 2004—this record details the group’s 19th-century origins in the United Kingdom, their fractious history, their extraordinary use of scripture to control members and dissidents, and their lucrative business and financial arrangements. Written from the perspective of an investigative reporter, this comprehensive history explores why the Exclusive Brethren contributed financially to election advertising in support of conservative political parties and how their actions resulted in damaged lives and broken families. A fascinating story of influence and power exercised across several continents, this account demonstrates how a small, fringe group infiltrated politics and even befriended then Prime Minister John Howard.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bizarre, wealthy and dangerous sect
It is no surprise, says investigative reporter, Michael Bachelard, that the Exclusive Brethren, a well-heeled and secretive Christian sect, should have been the apple of the eye of "conservative and authoritarian politicians such as John Howard", the former Australian Prime Minister. They are all clean-cut and straight-laced; big on `family values' and women staying home to tend children and husband; frowning on abortion and homosexuality; frothing at the mouth about trade unions and the Greens; venerating small business and private schooling; rooting for wars on Iraq and `terrorism'.

The sect's "doctrine of separation", which keeps the Brethren excluded from the spiritually `contaminated' material world, has resulted in a suite of bizarre rules and prohibitions, including banning shorts and facial hair for men, banning university for everyone, forbidding Brethren dwellings from having shared walls with non-Brethren dwellings and proscribing radio and TV, computers and mobile phones, and fax machines and automatic garage-door openers.

Sheltering behind the ramparts of `religious freedom' is the sect's enforcement of discriminatory gender roles.A Brethren woman can not "put herself in a position of authority over a man" and, once married, can not seek paid work. The only job available for Brethren girls is telemarketing until it is time to procreate.

Under the latest `Elect Vessel' to head the sect, Bruce Hales, a Sydney accountant and furniture-supplier, the Exclusive Brethren have modernised somewhat but only in financial and tax law which gets as close a scrutiny as scripture.Coupled with political lobbying to seek special exemptions and privileges as a Church/charity, the Brethren have become extremely wealthy.

Gross annual turnover of the thousand Brethren family businesses in Australia is A$2.2 billion, structured as family trusts to pay only the 30% corporate tax rate and not the top 48.5% individual tax rate.Hales is one of the biggest individual property-owners on the planet with holdings estimated by one former Brethren member at A$4 billion.Through family income-splitting and family trusts, the Brethren avoid tax and also rort the public purse by claiming a range of social security payments.

Openness and transparency is greatly feared by the Brethren which retains tight control of its members through instilling fear of the outside world, indoctrination, coercion and intimidating its members with being `shut up' (placed under household solitary confinement) or being excommunicated and losing family contact for ideological deviation or infractions of rules.Criticism of the sect by former members, or journalists, is met with defamation writs and threats of hugely expensive legal action.

The human and economic sins of this dark but dangerous little sect are many and Bachelard has done well to bring them to light. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chief Men Among the Brethren
Chief Men Among the Brethren provides a fascinating survey into the lives of nineteenth century Christians.Pickering communicates a story about Englishmen and Irishmen of almost ultra apostolic character and lifestyle(but not office ! ) who left fortunes, vocations andclerical positions inthe established church to spawn a movement which has had a far reaching(albeit largely unknown) influence on the theology of much of conservativeChristianity, Baptists and American Fundamentalists. The formatofferspictures andbiographies of most of the early "Plymouth Brethren" including the insightful Mr. John Nelson Darby, his colleague, thebrilliant William Kelly with his mind for the universe and the ever popularyet poignant C.H.M. (Charles Henry Macintosh). The book serves as an amplehistorical resource for anyone studying this movement. Yet, shining throughthis historical sketch is their Biblical theology, their simplicity, theirdisdain for the clergy and their personal sacrifice and adoration for theascended Christ. It is clearly written and at times inspirational. Itincites the reader to desire to follow on in their footsteps. Indeed, forthose seeking spiritual encouragement, Chief Men Among the Brethrendescribes the lives of men who believed God, walked with God and desired toraise the standard of historic New Testament Christianity beyond thebaneful confines of denominational bigotry. Henry Pickering has providedmaterial on their conversion, the circumstances that led to theirunderstanding of the simplicity of gathering alone to the Name of the LordJesus Christ on the ground of the Unity of the One Body of Christ (theChurch) and separation from the world. In his effort, he does not fail toevoke the excitement of those early days. I highly recommend this excellentresource. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good installment
James L. Nelson did again what I hoped he would do. He created another fine installment of light, breezy, escapist literature. Don't have a sailboat, read Nelson.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Pirate Round
This book is part of a trilogy - though I found it difficult to determine in what order the three books were published. The Pirate Round is the third (I think) but I found it wasn't off putting to read the third of the three, first.

The book actually grew on me. The author can tell an interesting story and, early 18th century piracy is an interesting subject for sure. The sailing scenes are realistic and the character development above average. Dialog is fast paced. In all - a good, fast read. I read it largely while sitting at a beach and struggled to put it down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable to read
Very enjoyable, fun to read, escape from the daily grind, book to read.If the subject matter interests you, you can't help but enjoy this book. But, of course, I say the same thing about every book in this series. But I mean it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nail biter
This was a book that couldn't be put down once you opened it. Marlow and Elizabeth made a very strong pair. Nelson should have found some way to continue the story. Three books in the series were to short.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Swashbuckling Adventure!
I bought this book when I was in the book store not realizing it was the third in the series. It is the climatic end of the trilogy, Marlowe (a former pirate) sets out to England to sell his crop of tobacco, but is thwarted when he meets his enemy Roger Press. This sets him and his wife Elizabeth on an exciting journey and adventure across the seas to madagascar. This book is packed with lots of action and fights scenes as these two pirates battle it out. This story was captivating and thrilling to read. And I loved every moment of it. Though I recommend reading the first two books prior to this one so you can enjoy the whole saga. But either way you'll love this piratical adventure. This is certainly one of my favorite books and fans of Nelson will also enjoy The North Kingdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT READ WITH A NEW LOOK AT VAMPIRES
Antoinette and Christian are winners for me but my fave has to be Oberon! There is a little sadness in a death which shocked me but as with many PR books we can only hope that maybe just maybe the character may be resurrected. Cannot wait for book 2 to see what happens now with the characters that have been introduced.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe in the future
Not a great first try but there was some possibility of potential. I put it down many times but then wanted to know a little bit mores so picked it up again. The plot has giant holes, the editing is terrible, the female lead is confused - "I don't need protecting." and yet she gets captured 88 times... but it wasn't the worst writing I've read and that's by major authors... so I think and hope that with some experience and growth O'Hara has the possibility to write a riveting book. I would wait a couple of books before I tried again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start Of An Exciting New Series
I've been looking forward to this book and I wasn't disappointed. The author has created a fully developed alternative world full of fascinating creatures and political machinations. Antoinette is a good heroine, feisty without being reckless, while Christian makes a wonderful hero--a vampire with humanity we can relate to. The action starts on the first page and doesn't let up, keeping the pages turning. The ending had me on the edge of my seat. With a cast of interesting secondary characters that I'm looking forward to discovering more about, I can't wait for the next installment in this excellent new Urban Fantasy series.

2-0 out of 5 stars has potential
I gave this book 2 stars but believe the author has potential. Antoinette Petrescu witnessed her mother being murdered by a rogue vampire(dreniac) when she was 6 years old. She grows upto become a Venator(rogue vampire hunter) Christian Laroque works for a government approved agency to hunt rogue vampires as well. But Christian's an Aeternus(vampire) The two must work together to hunt the rogue vampire that is on a killing spree. My problem at this point is that the story becomes cliched and erratic. Sure its a familiar plot but with some fancy writing and a creative edge many authors have made it work. Antoinette is a kick butt hunnter, the best in her class, yet early in the story she is almost bested by a group of teenage humans. Odd when you know she fights vampires for a living. Christian doesnt have any oomph. He stands around looking sexy and the author dresses him in a black suit and red shirt.Very vampiric.LOL. The story then becomes disjointed as a lot of characters are introduced by name and no description. They appear and disappear. I also think the author fell into the kill a character for impact mode. Characters died that could have played an interesting part in future novels or this one for that matter. The villain in this was a surprising twist but then even that was ruined by the appearance of a Aeternus(vampire)that was over a century old but stuck with the appearance of a 6 yr old. Another overused cliche. But there is potential. I think with a better more consistent story line, a little less cliche, and no more purposeless killing of characters, we'd have a winner. Maybe a story featuring the animalians (shifters)As for the spelling and typos-there were many. But lately I'm noticing that in a lot of romance so it may be editing in general in need of beefing up.

Overall, paranormals and vampire stories are still in demand. Tracey O'hara should take a moment study what she has and refine it.I'd give this author another chance just because I did see potential and the main parts work for me featuring hunters, rogue vamps and shifters on the police force

5-0 out of 5 stars HOT!!!
I read this book and *loved* it! Christian is the ultimate drool-worthy hero and Antoinette a totally gorgeous kick-ass heroine with a traumatic past she wants to avenge. This is a definate keeper for me - what a stunning debut! ... Read more
