Product Description
What makes Calvary Chapel Distinctive? It's always good to have a grasp of the distinctive work that God has done in our fellowship. If Calvary Chapel is exactly like the church across the street it would be better to simply merge the two. But, if there are qualities that make us different, then we have a unique and special place in the plan of God. Certainly there are churches that share many of our beliefs and practices. But God has done a wonderful work of balance in the Calvary Chapel movement that does make us different. Some churches believe in the gifts and ministry of the Holy Spirit, but don't have a strong emphasis on Biblical teaching. Others place strong emphasis on teaching the Word of God, but don't believe the gifts of the Spirit are available and valid today. In Calvary Chapel we value the teaching of the Word, and possess an open heart to the work of the Holy Spirit. This balance makes Calvary Chapel a distinct and uniquely blessed movement of God. And so, it's important to understand the Biblical principles that explain why God has allowed us to exist and grow. ... Read more

Inspirational.
God can use anyone.God can even use individuals who have made a mess of their lives. Some of these dudes were REALLY messed up.Each chapter tells the story of a unique person. Each of these individuals is now being used powerfully by God.These were folks who were extremely different, yet each followed certain principles to get to where they are now. Those are principles that are available to me--or to you.

I got this book just as our fellowship group was starting a study of Acts. This is complements our study beautifully! Churches nowadays need to stay grounded in the Word of God and Chuck Smith with his church has experienced and learned a lot. They are the Book of Acts in action! Every church member should read this! Who knows? It may start a revival!

Jesus said we would receive His power when the Holy Spirit came upon us. 5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great guide to go by
Having guidelines for speaking in tongues, interpretation, and speaking a prophetic word out loud in church can seem like oppression to some believers. It is actually freeing to us as believers, not confining.Following the Bible's guidelines can give the opportunity for the Spirit to move without the confusion that many services can have. The spiritual gifts will be given for the edification of the church and to glorify the Lord. This book will give a guide from the scriptures on how to have an afterglow service.

5-0 out of 5 stars A biblical guide
I love going to afterglows to worship and wait on the Lord. This book is a wonderful guide on the do's and don'ts of what should biblically take place in an afterglow. This is great for those who may be a little confused or scared of the gifts of the Spirit so that they may see scripturally what it all means.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting on the Lord
I find it so thrilling that we as believers together in Christ can gather for a time of worship and exercise the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This book spells out the do's and dont's, giving guidelines concerning things that oftentimes happen in Afterglows.Very useful and very scriptural. ... Product Description
Redeemed and Restored is a collection of twelve spiritual autobiographies-from woman like Kay Smith, Cathe Laurie, and Diane Coy-but really, it is the singular story of an extraordinary God's power to rescue lives that are far adrift. Jesus Christ is the hero of every narrative and His glorious love and mercy come shining through every page. The women whose lives are summarized in this book were central to the Jesus Movement revival of the 1970's. In this regard Redeemed and Restored is a historical narrative detailing how God was at work in one of the most tumultuous times in twentieth-century American history. Weary travelers on life's road will be reminded that God is near to the brokenhearted and at work in the most chaotic of world events. it is our hope that readers will be so filled with a sense of awe when they've turned the last page that they will be moved to record their own testimonies at the back of this thin volume, thus adding one more chapter to the everlasting redemption story. ... When great women of faith were asked, "What influenced you the most?" Their answer is always first their devotional life, then second, books, especially biographies made a profound impact on their spiritual development. That is what this book is about. It contains 12 radical and amazing testimonies; biographies of ordinary women who have been transformed by God's extraordinary power.

Reading these stories will demonstrate to you that God loves to use ordinary women (just like you!); women who went from helplessness to hope, fear to freedom. And the last chapter is reserved for you to write your own story of how God has Redeemed and Restored you! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique and great resource for new and mature Christians...
This is a great resource for new Christians looking for a discipleship primer or for a mature Christian looking for encouragement. Using simple words in his testimony Pastor Wayne was able to acknowledge theological difficulties yet still acknowledge God was working within those difficulties. That was a lot more refreshing than only acknowledging the bad and ignoring that God still used those circumstances in his life.

If this book was only about one remarkable man's walk with God it would still be a worthwhile read, but even though this is biographical, Pastor Wayne mostly fades into the background to give a sense of the awesomeness of God and His desire to transform lives by His Spirit and His Word. It also gives a unique and personal insight into recent Christian history from Korea to the Calvary Chapel Movement in Southern California.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Spirit Led Life : by Wayne Kim
The book titled " The Spirit Led Life " by Wayne Kim; is smooth reading, making it quite easy to comprehend and digest. From Pastor Kim's Testimonial to the last page, this book is packed with helpful information for the newly { born-again Christian, or one who is seeking the Truth to the seasoned Senior Pastors and scholars of our time }. DR. Kim's gifted talent is portrayed in his Spirit led connective knowledge of the why & how to live " a Spirit led life ", according to His Word, for His Glory. The Bible clearly is Brother Wayne's basis for his knowledge and teaching ability. As I read through his manuscript, I felt a closeness as a one on one session with my mentor tying my thoughts with his to God's Holy Word. If you want to be a witness to Jesus, a preacher a pastor or a servant to Christ in any way. I highly recommend that you include " The Spirit Led Life " by Wayne Kim " in your study structure. I know Pastor Wayne Kim as a man of prayer, and as I reflect on what he shares with us in his book, I know that Brother Wayne lives a Spirit led life. His knowledge will not only help you to find the right path, but help you stay on it by focusing on Jesus. Deny yourself and take up your cross daily.

The Spirit Led Life in the whole counsel of God

I love to read this book ! Thank you Rev. Wayne Kim for writing this wonderful book. This is very practical, insightful as well as entertaining to read.

Rev. Way Kim is one of my favorite pastors.I, one of the Staff Members in CCAH, see him every Sunday morning. He preaches with much wisdom, truth, and love during the Lord's Day Worship Service at Calvary Chapel Anaheim Hills (Rock & Fortress House).

Rev. Kim's Sermons are very biblical and spiritual. He preaches scripture by scripture (verse by verse) on the basis of Bible text following the method of inductive preaching. Now, his messages are transmitting to China, North Korea, and all over the world through MP3 files.

I would strongly recommend this book to those who are searching for the spirit led life in the whole counsel of God and a clear understanding of God's amazing love for us, especially for pastors and leaders of church...Shalom!!

These classic and inspiring messages will help you walk in the victory that is yours in Christ Jesus. These addresses were given by, J. The message of "Keswick" is the message of the New Testament, and wherever that message is given in the power of the Spirit, "life more abundant" always results.Having himself experienced the liberation and transformation which such teaching brings to every believing soul, the author earnestly prays that these pages may be used by Him whom they seek to honor, in leading some who read them, into the full enjoyment of "the blessed life." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A Book That Every Christian MUST Read!!
TREMENDOUS SPIRITUAL INSIGHT OF THE WRITER! I am sorry to admit that there are just a few christian writers like J. Oswald Sanders in these days, and believe me, I read a lot! J. Oswald Sanders describes a Christian life lived in the Holiness of God, living the victoriuos Spiritual life written both in Joshua and Ephesians. If every christian would experience the spiritual life described in this book, the world would be completely different...but at least, we must try hard individually to go deep in our relationship with Jesus Christ for others to see what God is able to do in our hearts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christ Indwelling and Enthroned by J. Oswald Sanders
What a joy to see that Calvary Publishing was given permission to bring this classic back into print. This miracle happened as the result of the encouragment of Kay Smith the wife of Pastor Chuck Smith. Her life was forever changed as she discovered from this book that it was through the triumphant work of the indwelling Holy Spirit that she can live a life of victory over pride and selfishness. She then wanted to see this powerful teaching available to generations to come.

This book declares that if Jesus lives in you then it is through the Holy Spirit that 'self' be dethroned. What is meant by 'self'? That part of you that says, "I am in control. I am number one!" Once self is dethroned then we must 'enthrone' Christ saying, "Jesus, You are Lord of every area of my life." You will want to experience for yourself this abundant life.

Influenced by the rich and deep teaching of Gregory Mantle and L.E. Maxwell (founder of Prairie Bible Intstitute)Sanders clearly reveals that the secret of peace and power is through Christ Indwelling and Enthroned. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not an easy read.
I am very interested in learning more about God's word through commentaries, so I decided to pick this up from a Calvary Chapel Book Store.I'm am finishing up the book, but it is a very difficult read. The problem with a lot of scholars and authors that write commentaries from their view is that they don't always do it in a way that is easily relatable to the average reader. In my humble opinion, reading the actual book of "Revelation of Jesus Christ" is a much easier read than this book.I gave it two stars because I'm sure there are people out there that can keep up with the path the author takes you. But, as I read the book I found that I was being moved in different directions that I began to loose focus of the topic he was covering.I really like the layout the author approached. He would have the verses from the book of "Revelation Of Jesus Christ", then begin his commentary.I like that.Unfortunately, during his commentary, I just lost focus and interest. It seemed a bit long winded for me.It could've been edited and produce a much more straight forward book.

I will probably read this book again, just as a challenge to see if I can keep up having gone through it once. However, a book shouldn't cause you to do this.

I would recommend that you really look into other commentaries before attempting to pick this one up.Donald Grey Barnhouse is supposed to be a very well known and authorative figure in writing books. My review is not taking anything away from his credentials, or his accomplishments, but I am strictly stating my experience with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revelation: An Expostional Commentary by Donald Grey Barnhouse
Donald Grey Barnhouse, a very popular and 'colorful' Bible teacher, was convinced that the Bible provided a current commentary on the world's passing scene and he always sought to show how current events can be explained by the Bible.

It is obvious that the writer of this devotional commentary felt that understanding the prophetic message provides strength to the believer for the conflict of the days ahead. This commentary is scholarly in the sense that the author always sought to be faithful to the true interpretation of the text. It is also a devotional commentary because Dr. Barnhouse decried the tendency of some Bible students to devour prophetic teaching without seeing it produce practical results in theri lives.

May this volume bring the same blessing to its readers that other works of Dr. Barnhouse have brought. May all of us give heed to the solumn message of God's Last Word. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great balance
A great, easy read with the difference between Calvanism and Arminianism and what the Word of God says.
If there is anything that I would say against this book, it is that it is a bit brief. It is very much a "booklet" and doesn't take more than 10-15 minutes to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars 20 pages?!
Has the church "struggled" with this "issue" since the Reformation? Or has Chuck Smith departed from historical Christianity? The church did not begin with the Jesus movement in the 60s...

Sadly Chuck Smith hopes to dismiss hundreds of years of church history stretching back before the Reformation with a terse 20-page pamphlet. If you want to believe what Pastor Smith tells you without reading your Bible, by all means pick this up. Otherwise study out the issue for yourself, Bible in hand, and may the Holy Spirit guide you into truth with the rest of Jesus' church (Jn 16:4-15).

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbiased and informative.
Chuck Smith shows both sides very clearly, and then he clarifies where the whole light of scripture stands on each.He doesn't discount either side, but he explains what his interpretation of the Word of God is in regard to each.Fast and easy read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Balanced Book
This twenty-page pamphlet gives an excellent overview of Calvinism and Arminianism, both historical and theological. It is concisely and comparatively written making it easy to understand the general philosophies of both ideologies. Chuck does not set out to prove one theology right over the other. Rather he says up front, "Calvary Chapel has been known for striking a balance between extremes on controversial theological issues that have often caused division rather than unity in the body of Christ." (p.5.)

Is the Bible inerrant or not?Author Dr. Harold Lindsell answers in the affirmative-Yes, It Is!Discussing the meaning of special revelation and inspiration, Lindsell shows the Scripture's witness to itself and the historical view of inspiration and its implication. The basic fact is that a view of "limited inerrancy" has crept into evangelical Christianity. The basic problem is that a view of limited inerrancy invariably leads to concessions in matters of faith and practice. The basic need is for the church to be aware of the problem and to articulate her belief in Biblical inerrancy without fear and without compromise.Dr. Harold Lindsell leaves no doubt that the battle has been joined. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Still relevant today
This author predicted, with amazing accuracy, the direction that the Christian Church was moving in.His worst fears have been realized as less than 10% of Christians today believe in the inerracy of the Bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good history, shaky theology
Lindsell has done a fine job of documenting the various attacks on Biblical inerrancy/infallibility coming from within the church itself over the past hundred years or so. The book was written in 1976, so it is a bit dated, but still it is quite informative.

In doing so he raises unspoken questions that every Bible believer should ask and that he himself does not answer. Lindsell articulately and accurately reports that in every single case of a Christian denomination abandoning inerrancy, the move away from inerrancy was started by the denominational seminary(s) and/or denominational leaders or both. "In almost every case, unorthodoxy has its beginning in the theological seminaries" (Page 197, 9th printing). "Wherever liberalism has fought, it has won" (Page 207). "Probably 90 percent of the people in the [Southern Baptist] pews believe in biblical infallibility. But the infection of which I speak has been spreading steadiy in the convention and especially in its educational institutions" (Page 208).

So the question is: Why are the people who know the Bible best (seminary faculty and denominational leaders) the most likely not to believe it is inerrant?

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Account...
I found Harold Lindsell's book to be fascinating looking back at his assessment of the crisis at hand.Considering now what took place in Southern Baptist life after this book was written, Lindsell's writings sound almost prophetic.Lindsell accurately recognizes that once infallibility is abandoned, it opens the doors for all sorts of other departures from the faith (25, 139). One only needs to look at the mainline denominations today and their embrace of sinful practices, inclusivistic views of the Gospel, or feministic approaches to worship to recognize the reality of which Lindsell spoke. He also aptly recognizes that defection from inerrancy tends to begin in the institutions (83, 133).Yet, the fault does not completely lie there.Too many arrive on those campuses "illiterate" on our doctrines making them an easy prey (134).Thus, part of the fault lies in the churches' failure to properly equip their young people.I wonder if that issue has been addressed. As I hear stories about the defection from the faith of students in the religion department in the religion departments of Christian colleges, I fear that the problem that Lindsell addressed still remains in our churches today, and as such the warning of his book still needs to be heard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Of decent historical significance
Lindsell's book should be a immense interest to students of American Christianity. The book largely signals the beginning of the end for neo-evangelicalism and heralds the retreat of many evangelicals back to separatist fundamentalism. The substantive arguments, however, suffer from serious flaws. The author argues that foundationalism has been the normative means of biblical interpretation until the 1800s.Nevertheless, the epistemology underlying foundationalism did not exist before the early modern era.If viewed as a sort of "Fundamentalist Manifesto", the book makes more sense. It's a must read for those who want to understand the intellectual underpinnings of the religious right, which blossomed a few years after the publication of Lindsell's book.

3-0 out of 5 stars a bit of history, well researched, but one-sided
The author states quite clearly near the beginning of the book that he does not consider those who disagree with inerrancy to be apostate. However, growing up as I did in an SBC (Southern Baptist Convention) congregation back in the 70's and 80's, I know that this issue is one that was used by fundamentalists in the SBC as grounds for firing professors, trying to kick out moderate congregations, and eventually orchestrating a hostile takeover of the denomination.Consequently, more liberal members of the SBC (who liked to call themselves moderates) considered this more a battle over freedom and autonomy than a battle for or against the Bible.

The author tries to show that some form of inerrancy was generally accepted and therefore was never a hot topic for debate until about the 19th century. However, the reason it was never debated is essentially that nobody thought to debate it until then. While I happen to agree with a lot of what the author says, I don't think this argument will work with the more liberal crowd partly because of an unwillingness to apply the same kind of logic across the board. For example, many fundamentalists teach dispensationalism, which is generally recognized to be another 19th century invention. If you're going to ask people to reject historical-critical analysis on the basis that it wasn't invented until the 19th century, it would be only fair to throw out dispensationalism on the same grounds.

The author's secondary argument against the "errancy" viewpoint is that it ultimately leads to the rejection of other essential doctrines.

In my experience, what nearly got our SBC congregation kicked out was not what was taught about the Bible, but when they ordained women.

I think to a degree both the historical/critical method and the inerrancy doctrine have been used as tools to justify other beliefs and actions.

I take off a star for being one-sided, and another star because he often relies on secondary sources for his quotes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful condition and price
I wanted to replace this for a woman that lost her original and was saddened when I found it was out of print.Amazon to the rescue and I found this one.Good price at near perfect condition.
Many of the Pastors wives names are familiar. They share personal, daily and life issues with strength drawn from the Word and a personal relationship with Jesus. Not to be used for just one year, you'll want to start it again at the beginning next year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Passion for Jesus - is a Blessing for you!
I march saw this book at my church bookstore and leafed through it.It had some encouraging stuff in it but I didnt have the $$ for the cover price so I was happy to find a used copy on Amazon. So far each day has something great andI would highly recommend this book for someone who is looking for direction or encouragement in their daily prayer lives.

UPDATE*** After my initial review and continued reading in this book, I love it so much that I purchased a copy for a friend and was hoping to get another copy for a 2nd friend.Imagine my suprise to see some sellers offering this book for more than double the orignal published price! While this book may not be available NEW from Amazon, if you can find a used copy here for under $10. get it; if not you can most likely find a New copy at your local Calvary Bookstore (or one close by!) for the orignal publsihed price which i believe is around $15. ...which is what i plan to do. ...
