Book Description
If you enjoy the writings of the Puritans, earlier Reformers, and especially the Westminster Divines, then this CD series is for you! This 32 CD set contains a large number of classic (and rare) books and sermons by many of the best authors (see authors and titles below) of both the first and second Reformations -- with a strong emphasis on the work of some of the most notable theologians and scholars that attended the Westminster Assembly. Various books on each CD are being made available here for the first time in many years (even centuries) -- and many of these classics are presently unavailable in any printed format (including Still Waters Revival Books photocopied hardcover and cerlox bound books)!

Most of the CDs in this series are jam-packed (using over 600MB of space) and the information is presented in the common Adobe Acrobat PDF format. This format is readable by all types of computers with a CD drive using the free Acrobat Reader program available at adobe.com. The smallest CD contains over 4600 pages and the largest CD contains over 13,000 pages of information!

Each CD is indexed so that you can easily click on a link to go directly to individual books. Furthermore, and this is even more important to those serious about locating important theological information, individual chapters of each book are also indexed for direct (one click) access. This is exceedingly useful for all the books included on each CD -- but is particularly helpful when using the commentaries (since you are able to easily access whichever individual verse [or verses] the author is commenting on in each commentary). However, individual words are not searchable in the older books included (since these are facsimile PDF "pictures" of the rare books, similar in appearance to Still Waters Revival Books photocopied hardcover and cerlox bound books), but individual words are searchable for all of the contemporary bonus books that are included with each CD.

In addition to all the rare Reformation classics, on each of the 32 CDs in the PURITAN BOOKSHELF series you also get a folder full of five (or more) FREE bonus (PDF) BOOKS by classic and contemporary Puritan and Reformed authors,

Some of the CDs also include additional free bonus audio (MP3) sermons and books.

This is a great opportunity to own a vast library of some of the most important works of both Reformations (and related contemporary titles), at a small fraction of the cost of the actual books! Moreover, each CD in the PURITAN BOOKSHELF CD series will give you "one click" access to all titles and chapters in each work -- something not available at all with printed books. And remember that a number of these valuable and scarce works are almost impossible to find in our day (and if found, can be very expensive on the rare book market) or are buried away in libraries or rare book collections on various continents and are thus inaccessible to most people. These CDs now make these exceptional and extraordinary Puritan and Reformed works both accessible and affordable to everyone! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Covenants and Martyrs
The Puritan Bookshelf CDs are a wonderful collection of rare, out-of-print books which would cost a fortune even if one could spend the time searching for them in libraries and used bookstores in obscure places the world over.

Along with several books from contemporary covenanters, this particular CD contains over one hundred books, sermons and other documents of the Scottish and Dutch Churches of the 17th century.

James Guthrie's "Causes of the Lord's Wrath against Scotland manifested in his sad late dispensations," is a powerful, gripping statement against sins that we often gloss over or fail to recognize as sin. And you don't have to be a minister to appreciate "A Humble Acknowledgement of the Sins of the Ministry of Scotland." What a list! How convicting to anyone whose desire is to walk in the ways of the Lord! This godly man knew the human heart!

Even in 1558, Christopher Goodman had an excellent grasp of the subject of "How Superior Powers Ought to Be Obeyed of their Subjects: and Wherein they may lawfully by God's Word be disobeyed and resisted." His able and thorough treatment of the subject is both a challenge and a blessing to today's reader.

What a blessed privilege it is to read "The Last Speeches of the Two Ministers, Mr. John King and Mr. John Kid." Both of these men were young, with wives and children. Yet both were willing to give up all that they held dear in this life, for the sake of the truth and the Lord they loved. John Kid was able to say, "It may be there are a great many here that judge my lot very sad and deplorable. I must confess death itself, is very terrible to flesh and blood, but as it is an outlet to sin, and an inlet to righteousness, it is the Christian's great and inexpressible privilege..." Equally sobering is James Renwick's dying testimony, given shortly before his death in Feb. 1688. Oh, for a walk with the Lord that would allow one to say with him, "...Farewell beloved sufferers, and followers of the Lamb; farewell Christian intimates; farewell Christian and comfortable mother, and sisters; farewell sweet societies... farewell night wanderings, in cold and weariness for Christ; farewell sweet Bible, and preaching of the gospel... farewell conflicts with a body of sin and death. Welcome scaffold, for precious Christ; welcome heavenly Jerusalem... welcome crown of glory, white robes, and songs of Moses and the Lamb; and above all, welcome O thou blessed Trinity and one God!..."

In the words of Edmund Calamy, "A covenant indeed is a golden girdle to tie us fast to God; it is a joining and gluing ourselves to the Lord... a strong hedge to keep us from breaking out into disobedience." His sermon, "The Great Danger of Covenant-refusing and Covenant-breaking," was given on an occasion of covenant renewal. It is a sobering reminder of the perpetuity of covenants, and the binding effect they have on us even today, and how serious a matter it is to ignore that fact.

"A Covenanter's Catechism," by an unknown author, is a useful series of questions and answers on covenants in general, and of the Solemn League and Covenant in particular. This catechism is a condensation of a number of sermons delivered to a particular congregation, which were later put into question-and-answer format for the benefit of a broader audience.

This is but a small taste of what is available on this priceless set of CDs. Tremendous value and a wealth of wisdom and biblical instruction are packed into every CD. If you're interested in reformed theology, this is a great way to get an extensive library of books, lectures and sermons, for very little expense.

You can read a summary of the complete 32 CD set of Puritan Bookshelf CDs in one place online, at Still Waters Revival Books. SWRB also lists a similar set of 30 CDs in their Reformation Bookshelf CD series. ... Read more

The "Altare Damascenum" is beyond comparison the most learned and elaborate work ever written on the subject, embracing the whole controversy between the English and Scottish divines as to government, discipline, and worship ( M'Mcrie, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 284).This volume is the English "tract" (of 222 pages) referenced above. CALDERWOOD, DAVIDThe History of the Kirk of Scotland (8 volumes) Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology, commenting on this eight volume history, states, "it is a major source for the history of the Church of Scotland from the Reformation until 1625." This massive set (of over 6000 pages) was printed between 1842 and 1849. It contains a 171 page index and Thomson's "Life of David Calderwood." The contents are listed and dealt with chronologically by year; beginning in the preamble with the descent of the Scots from the ancient Gauls, but formally covering the period (focusing to the church) from 1514 to 1625. Documents and information available no where else (that we know of) are also included in this set. Must reading for researchers and those interested in church history! CALDERWOOD, DAVIDThe Pastor and the Prelate or Reformation and Conformity Shortly Compared (First American edition of 1844). This 17th century work refutes prelacy. It deals with controversies over things "indifferent," people's souls, state and society, etc. -- as they are affected by these two systems of government.CALDERWOOD, DAVIDThe True History of the Church of Scotland, From the Beginning of the Reformation, unto the end of the Reigne of King James VI (1678)This is the officially sanctioned history of the Church of Scotland, written, as the title page notes, by "appointment of the General Assembly, by whom his laboures herein were several times revised and examined, and at length approved for the Press." The title continues: "Wherein, besides some touches of the Civil State and Alteration of Affaires, in their due order; there is not only a series of the Assemblies, and of the Principal of their Actings recorded; but also a full and plaine Relation of the Trials and Troubles, which the Church did meet with from Enemies to the purity of the Doctrine, Worship, Discipline and Government; of the several Alterations, caused or occasioned thereby; of the many sad and lamentable faintings and backslidings of Persons, sometimes eminent in the Church; of the faithful contendings of others for the Prerogatives of Christ, as the alone Head of the Church, for the purity of His Institutions, and for the Liberty and Privileges of His Church and Kingdom, against all ...
