Crucible of Conflict and Controversy
Holiness Abroad: Nazarene Missions in Asia is a scholarly analysis of the development of foreign mission policy in the Church of the Nazarene, and its implementation in Asia.

Professor Floyd Cunningham presents an honest account of the difficulties involved in establishing indigenous, yet authentically Nazarene, congregations and districts in India, Japan, China, Korea, and the Philippines. Holiness Abroad presents the crucible of conflict and controversy that shaped Nazarene missions policies and practices.

J. Stephen Malley, co-editor of the Pietist and Wesleyan Studies series, believes that Holiness Abroad "will be of interest to historians interested in the history of missions, American religious history and American-Asian relations, and missiologists." It will also be appealing to those interested in seeing behind the scenes on Nazarene mission fields and knowing more of the personalities and activities of both missionaries and local Nazarenes.

Great Man of God
As I was preparing for the Centennial Celebration of the Church of the Nazarene on Sunday, October 5, 2008, I thought I'd I read this book on the founder of the church, Phineas Bresee. Good book, well researched, maybe a little too well researched. By that I mean there are many details (names, places) that are relevant to Bresee's story, but may be irrelevant to the reader. When I read a biography, I want to know more about the individual than I do circumstantial events and people that the author discretionarily decides to retain or omit from the book. In this case, I felt the author may have retained a bit too much information from his research. It's still a good book that I recommend for anyone who wants to know more about a great man of God in Bresee.

I purchased this for a class that I am taking to make a paper on. I found it fulfilling and spoke the root of Phineas F. Bresee.

Concise to the point of ambiguity
I first read this book as a required text as an undergrad.I didn't like it much.In seminary, I took a second look at it and found that this book is more than just a biography of Bresee.This book is JAM-PACKED with information regarding Bresee's roots in Methodism and his role in uniting holiness churches.It is a go-to book for my history of the Church of the Nazarene because of Bangs' excellent detail.I give this book four stars instead of five for the following reason: Bangs is too concise.Normally people like that, right?I wanted Bangs to say more in each paragraph precisely because some great historical information got lost in ambiguity--thus a student's need for secondary sources.It left me with the feeling that this book was rushed to the presses. ...
