4-0 out of 5 stars FILLS A NICHE
This small volume has a wealth of information that should be quite interesting to those who are already involved in certain specific studies, e.g., history of the Disciples of Christ, race relations in American churches, sociology of an American denomination. As one might expect, such a brief volume does have its inadequacies. The author makes only superficial references to the general history of the DOC, and therefore provides an inadequate context for understanding the events that she presents. This should pose little problem for those who are already familiar with DOC history and the issues that have divided that group over the past century, for they will find throughout the volume the fingerprints of various theological issues that remain invisible to readers who do not know what to look for. This becomes problematic only when those issues effect the significance and interpretation of the topic under discussion. For example, readers are left to conclude that certain actions (or more often inaction)stemmed from racial attitudes when in fact, the historic polity of the DOC may have allowed little alternative no matter what the racial biases may have been. Finally, the presentation tends to assume a definitive knowledge of what good Christians should have done in each situation, admitting few moral ambiguities in how best to handle racial, cultural, or language barriers in Christ's church and offering inadequate discussion of diverse perspectives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Disciples
It is quite clear that modern Christians, especially mainline Protestants, have become biblically illiterate -- this is true despite great advancements in historical and theological study of the Bible.Eugene Boring, who is an accomplished New Testament scholar, wrote this book in 1997 for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He shares here the way in which a faith community that has rooted itself in Scripture, especially New Testament, studied and made use of this text.

At the close of the book he offers important advice as to how a community of faith can reengage with Scripture and over come its tendency toward illiteracy. If we're going to talk theologically as a community that is non-creedal, then we must understand that resource that stands at the center of our faith.

This is essential reading! And just to make a play on the author's name -- this book is in no way boring!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A service to the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement!
Boring is doing the Stone-Campbell tradition a favor with his book.He tackles the difficult job of tracing 200 years (1804 to date) of biblical interpretation in North America by dividing them into five "generations."His definitions of "generation" are logical and help the reader to understand the evolution of biblical interpretation by Disciple leaders down through the years. For each "generation" Boring fairly describes "the good, the bad, and the ugly."Yet he does so with an irenic spirit.

The churches of Christ and the Christian Church/Church of Christ branches of the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement receive only one chapter each, in the book.Yet, throughout, Boring makes frequent references to each fellowship as he attempts to associate them with the influences of biblical interpretations by past "generation" leaders.

The book is heavily footnoted. The bibliography is extensive.I rate the book highly because of the difficulty of the subject matter and the excellent analysis displayed by the author.I believe church leaders, bible educators, and bible students, especially of the Stone-Campbell tradition, will benefit from the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars An exploration of Restoration hermeneutics
"Disciples and the Bible" helps fill a gap in understanding hermeneutical history in the Restoration movement.Boring's book is useful in understanding the "how's" and "why's" of doctrinal "development" in Restoration thinking. For those in the Church of Christ and Christian Church branches of the Restoration movement, the book is less helpful (by Boring's admission). The main focus centres on the Disciples of Christ, and after the various splits in the movement, less attention is given to the other streams.Do not let the 500+ pages overly impress you, as the type set is rather large (making the reading easier, but meaning there is less to read). At times, the book comes across as a compilation of book reviews, as Boring examines some of the notable Restoration scholars and their works. This is a part of his purpose in tracing Restoration biblical interpretation. There seems to not be a great deal of attention given to the content of sermons in the five generations of the Restoration movement.Boring recognizes that this would be another means of approaching the topic, and that it would be a daunting task.Boring leaves you hungry for more, which is not a bad thing. The book is filled with headings, subheadings and a substantial bibliography which should prove helpful to further independent research. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Duane Cummins new book
Few historians have been so well positioned to write an account of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as Dr. D. Duane Cummins. He established himself teaching American history at Oklahoma City University all the while being an active Disciple churchman. He has headed the Division of Higher Education for the Disciples, served as Moderator of the Church, spent some 14 years as President of Bethany College which was established by Alexander Campbell, edited a three volume literary biography of Campbell, authored biographies of Dale Fiers and Kenneth Teegarden - foremost leaders of the Disciples as General Ministers and Presidents of the restructured denomination in the latter 20th century - and, since retiring with the title of President Emeritus of Bethany, served as interim President of Brite Divinity School of Texas Christian University. He is now a visiting scholar in American History at Johns Hopkins University.

This general history of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will be of interest to all heirs of the Stone-Campbell movement for Christian unity and restoration of New Testament Christianity. Not only they but all interested in the history of the culture and faith of frontier America in the 19th century. In addition, Cummins traces profound changes of the 20th century as the U.S. made its transition from rural to urban life and how it has affected one faith community.

The sub-title A Struggle for Reformation is appropriate! The first half of the book eloquently describes the leaders, hopes and dreams ofat least three generations with eventual separation into at least three fellowships or "denominations". The second part of the book focuses on developments as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) wing of the Stone-Campbell congregations emerge as a restructured church.

Previous histories by Garrison and DeGroot, Tucker and McAllister, while excellent, do not provide a history of the Disciples into the years since restructure. Cummins thus will be an essential text for students of the Disciples.

In addition to his concise and informative writing, which holds a reader's attention, Cummins provides excellent end notes, as complete a Bibliography as one could hope for, a helpful Index and even an Historic Time Linehelpfulin understanding howleaders and events fit into time. Also, there is a treasure in pictures of people and places.

This book is a must for every Disciple pastor, every congregation's library and will make an excellent and affordable text for discussion groups. I have been reading Disciple church history for more than sixty years and have been delighted at how much unknown material I have discovered in The Disciples - A Struggle for Reformation. It's the kind of book one will keep and refer to often.

- Robert E. Gartman, retired minister, Dallas

THE NEW LIFE provides inspiration and guidance for the new Christian, offering valuable insights for converts to the Christian faith and those who pastor and teach them. Andrew Murray gives short but in-depth studies on six main topics: the Word of God as the glorious and sure guide; the Son, the gift of the Father, to do all for us; what the Scriptures teach concerning sin; faith, which teaches us that all our salvation must be received every day of our life as a gift from above; the Holy Spirit; and the Holy Life of obedience and of fruitfulness in which the Spirit teaches us to walk. Pastor Murray's text is packed with scripture references for further study and teaches by example how to meditate on scripture. You can use the book both as an individual and as part of a group. Product Description
Terry Johnson stresses that the Beatitudes are Jesus' handbook to living a fuller life. This better, more contented and satisfying life is only for the people who believe in him, because, as Terry demonstrates, the Sermon on the Mount was preached to the disciples and not to the general population. This blows a horrible hole in the theories of those who try to take this collection of Jesus' teachings as a guide to more harmonious living outside the church. God's blessings here are on his people in a special way, not on the population as a whole. To this end Terry doesn't allow for the word 'blessed' to be translated 'happy', as it trivialises some very serious points Jesus makes. He explains the beatitudes, showing both what they don't mean and opening up what they do. His conclusions are strong, challenging and immensely practical. You will be engaged in the impact of Jesus' words as you never have before. ... Read more
