Excerpt: The Elim Pentecostal Church (EPC) is a UK-based Pentecostal Christian denomination. George Jeffreys (18891962), a Welshman, founded the Elim Pentecostal Church in Monaghan, Ireland in 1915. Jeffreys was an evangelist with a Welsh Congregational church background. He was converted at age 15 during the Welsh Revival of 1904. Alexander A. Boddy, Vicar of All Saints, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland invited him to preach at his International Pentecostal Convention in Sunderland in May 1913. Between 1915 and 1934, Jeffreys was extremely active as a revivalist, and preached to large crowds throughout the United Kingdom. The church was brought together, first as the Elim Evangelistic Band, but this was changed to Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance when the Deed Poll was registered in April 1934. The name 'Elim' was taken from the account in the Book of Exodus, chapter 15, verse 27, where the Israelites, leaving the bondage of Egypt under the leadership of Moses, found an oasis called Elim: "Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters." This represented a place of refreshing and it was thought appropriate for a revival movement at that time. Differences of opinion over Jeffrey's open aspousal of British Israelism and disputes on church governance led Jeffreys to withdraw from the Elim Pentecostal Church in 1939 and to form the Bible-Pattern Church Fellowship in Nottingham, which founded other churches throughout England until the 1960s, but that now only continues as a small fellowship. The presidency of Elim then passed to...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=435896 ... Read more

Product Description
In this book, Hiu firstly examines the background to the gifts of tongues and prophecy with a comprehensive assessment of the historical evidence, both primary and secondary, finding that tongues is a uniquely Christian phenomenon. Hiu then demonstrates that 'New Testament prophecy' is best considered as a direct extension of Old Testament prophecy. Hiu moves on to define and describe the functions of both tongues and prophecy in the New Testament which subsequently provides a clear base from which to seek a coherent understanding of the context and intent of Paul's regulations in "1 Cor" 14.26-40. Attention is then focused on the socio-religious context of the known New Testament churches to determine if these regulations are applicable in non-Corinthian congregations. This ties in with a wider debate in Pauline scholarship surrounding whether Paul's intent was for Corinthians to be only addressed to the church at Corinth or whether he intended it to have a secondary audience also. Finally, Hiu draws the conclusion that Paul's regulations in "1 Corinthians" are aptly applicable in all known New Testament churches and that the Corinthian situation is not unique. The natural inference is thereby that these regulations may be considered further in application to Christian churches in a contemporary setting. Formerly the "Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement", a book series that explores the many aspects of New Testament study including historical perspectives, social-scientific and literary theory, and theological, cultural and contextual approaches, "The Early Christianity in Context" series, a part of "JSNTS", examines the birth and development of early Christianity up to the end of the third century CE. The series places Christianity in its social, cultural, political and economic context. "European Seminar on Christian Origins" and "Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus Supplement" are also part of "JSNTS". ... Read more

The life and ministry of Elizabeth Baker made a significant contribution to the birth of the classical Pentecostal Movement. She was the eldest daughter of the Rev. James and Mary Duncan family. She gave leadership to, and working with her sistersSusan A. Duncan, Hattie M. Duncan, Mary E. Work, and Nellie A. Fellfounded several ministries in Rochester, New York at the turn of the century. They first (1895) opened the Elim Mission and the Elim Faith Home in the city of Rochester. In 1902 they began Elim Publishing House and the Trust magazine, which was a free monthly journal, typically sixteen pages long, which featured their teaching, news of their ministries, and communication of like-minded Pentecostal events. By 1906 they inaugurated the Rochester Bible Training School to equip Pentecostal pastors and missionaries, and they established a church, Elim Tabernacle. They were influenced by the news of the Pentecostal outpourings in Wales (1905) and of the Azusa Revival (1906), and experienced the same in 1907. After the death of E. V. Baker (January 18, 1915), her sisters continued the Bible school (closing in 1923), hosted Pentecostal conferences (waning by 1930), and served as a centering point for their students who became foreign missionaries, until their retirement in the early 1930s. ...
