5-0 out of 5 stars A History of Ethical Humanist Religion
Like other books on Humanism that I have read recently, this book focuses on the history of the movement with particular attention to those events experienced by the author. The author promotes Ethical Culture and Humanism but his background leans toward the former. As the focus is on the history, the coverage of the beliefs is a bit vague.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of Ethical Culture or Humanism as a religion. ... Editorial Review

Book Description
This book introduces major philosophical theories and issues in the context of the contemporary debate about the so-called culture wars in American society. It is designed to make these theories come alive as they are related to these vital contemporary concerns and to provide a framework within which to assess the ongoing debate about the future direction of Western culture. As a book in ethical theory, it is designed to provide the framework for clear and comprehensive thinking about our cultural development. Classical ethical positions like cultural relativism, emotivism, egoism, hedonism, utilitarianism and theorists like Kant are introduced and assessed. The contemporary theorists John Rawls and Alasdair MacIntyre are given extensive treatment and made accessible to the introductory student in philosophy. "Culture War and Ethical Theory" exhibits a non-ptolemical tone as it relates these theories, for heuristic purposes, to the contrasting perspective of fundamentalism and secular humanism. These two viewpoints are treated fairly without pretense of thorough exposition. They were chosen because they set the contemporary debate in stark relief. Thus, they assist the reader in understanding the relationship of philosophical reflection to commonly held perspectives. ... Read more

Book Description
Working Across Cultures was the general theme of the 9thAnnual Conference of the European Business Ethics Network (EBEN),which took place at the Lufthansa Training Center, Seeheim, Germany,in September 1996. Representatives from both the business scene anddifferent academic disciplines discussed perspectives for ethicalsolutions of managing dilemmas in a world of cultural diversity, wherediffering norms and values are at the heart of all activities ofmultinational corporations.
Among the multifaceted discussion, three special focuses attractedparticular attention. The first highlight was set by Peter Duncan, CEOof Shell Germany, who addressed the conference theme with thebackground of Shell's dramatic experiences in the Brent Spar andNigeria affairs.
Second, renowned experts discussed the problem of internationalcorruption, which was significantly introduced with a keynote addressby Hon. Frene Ginwala, Speaker of the South African Republic'sParliament. Third, the role of values in corporate transformation wasdebated from the perspective of leading European firms.
This book is a collection of the most interesting and topicalpresentations of the conference, which should be of interest forbusiness and academic people who are concerned with ethical advancesin intercultural business activities. ... Read more

15. An evaluation of the philosophy and pedagogy of ethical culture

4-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable View into a Critical Period for the Ethical Culture Movement
"An Evaluation of the Philosophy and Pedagogy of Ethical Culture" is a disseration by Samuel Frederick Bacon for Catholic University.
The thesis was written in 1933, the year Felix Adler, the Ethical Movement founder, died. Adler was a powerful force for the movement, and a philosophical leader respected widely. His death was a blow to the Movement which had by then many leaders, but none that could match his singular influence.

The thesis is a thorough review of Ethical Culture's views and educational practices. Bacon confessed he didn't understand exactly Adler's more complex theories, but also points out that almost nobody else--including the leaders of the Movement--comprehended them either. He also described the various leaders at the time, whose views ranged widely.

Bacon gives a good solid Catholic criticism of the Movement's philosophy (but it wasn't emotional or harsh, like modern discourse), and suggested the Catholic Church could learn from the Ethical Culture's educational system (which, at the time was amazingly progressive, and whose attributes has been widely adopted). He also recommended that priests speak on "Bringing out the Best in Others, and Thereby Ourselves," since it was a good reformulation of the Golden Rule. Bacon was clear that these good ideas of Ethical Culture had could be adopted without damage to the Church.

I was impressed most by two aspects of Bacon's dissertation:

First, the hard work the author put into understanding the Ethical Culture Movement by reading its material and talking to members. No secondary sources for him. He could also apparently read German, and even made reference to the German Society for Ethical Culture, which didn't survive the Nazi period.

Second, the author, although he fundamentally disagreed with the philosophy, was quite willing to explain its position, and never was harsh or unfair in his critiques.

Frankly, his thesis is far superior in research, thought, analysis, and dispassionate writing than many popular books on religion.Bacon also apparently wrote a review of Scouting which I have not read, but I'm sure would be interesting and valuable to those interested in education, scouting, and history.

The disseration contains a valuable bibliography and index. ... Read more
