Have you ever watched two people sitting across from each other in a coffee shop, each absorbed in sending a text message? Are we turning the world into a bee hive, buzzing at each other? That is the unsettling paradox of Checked-In, a how-to book that combines some Twitter-like apps with the GPS (Global Positioning System).

Whether this turns life into a virtual game for fun and profit or eventually leads to black-hole nothingness is something even the authors are unsure of. But technology is leading us there in either case. The idea is your friends will be able to locate you--perhaps you'll meet up...indulge in some scavenger-hunt like electronic games. And businesses can pitch special deals to potential customers who are in the neighborhood. That is the promise: finding new friends, having fun times, promoting your business.

Unlike Facebook and Twitter, these users want to be selective. Geo-applications are linked to the physical world. You might learn a tip from someone knowledgeable about a place, "take the late spin class...less crowded" or get a recommendation on today's special at a pizza parlor. Confession: I did not find the book either jam full of information or easy-to-follow. But I am not the audience (I'm still trying to figure out how to retrieve calls on my BlackBerry).

I thouroughly enjoyed reading Foursquare Stories. Using his vast wealth of knowledge and information, Stephen Smith has put together a series of stories that mix facts and fiction together in a creative and fun way. I highly recommend the book.It is lively, informative, and full of interesting twists and turns. Numismatists, in particular, will find Foursquare Stories particulary enjoyable because the first few stories revolve around numismatist, Peter, his wife, Arli, and their encounters and adventures with coins.
