Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.

Product Description
Marie Hamilton touched the lives of thousands of prison inmates through her volunteer work in the Pennsylvania prison system. She challenged conventional wisdom about how to rehabilitate inmates by creating unique programs built on principles of nonviolence and restorative justice. Her philosophy with inmates was simple-look for the good, affirm it, and then educate, empower, and support. The programs Marie created became the backbone of more than thirty years of volunteer work, and the results were transformational. Discover what this quiet, unassuming woman with no formal education in criminal justice did to tear down the walls of mistrust, bringing respect and humanity to people on both sides of the prison bars. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars inspirational
A truely inspiring story written in a way which draws the reader into the compassion felt by Marie Hamilton. This is a book for anyone with a passion for healing of the human spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.
This is a great book. It is the perfect example of what can be accomplished when people look for the humanity in all of us. Even the worst of us can still have that spark of decency and caring and dignity, rekindled. Every warden in every prison should read this story.
What a world this could be if more people could reach this level of transcendence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top 10 reasons you should read this book:
Top 10 reasons you should read this book:

10.Melanie Snyder is an excellent writer.
9.You'll become acquainted with Marie Hamilton, a humble housewife who decided to live what she believes.
8.Hearing Marie's courageous story will make you question the moral rightness of how our society disposes of our troubled and unwanted citizens.
7.Reading about prison life draws your attention to a population that has lost all rights. You'll consider how empty and hopeless that may feel.
6.You'll be astounded to read that one out of every 100 American adults are now in prison or jail. You'll remember your own relative, neighbor, or acquaintance who has been incarcerated and what that experience may be like for them and those who love them.
5.Marie's compassion toward the outcast at times seems stupidly naïve and yet amazingly powerful. You'll ask yourself, "What would I do in that situation?"
4.You'll wonder at the patience and perseverance it takes to buck against the system in an effort to allow other people to feel purposeful.
3.You'll feel frustrated with the complexity of our current criminal justice system. So much more money goes into building and maintaining prisons than supporting positive rehabilitation programs. What can be done to change that?
2.You'll gain a better understanding and appreciation of the delicate, yet healing process of restorative justice.
1.This book promotes discussion and encourages action. You'll learn about Marie's organization called CenterPeace, Inc. and want to support its programs. You'll believe that the power of love really is stronger than cold, hard prison walls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read This Book!
Anyone who has ever had a loved one in our criminal justice system should be the first to read Grace Goes To Prison.Ditto for anyone who believes we can do a better in responding to those who break the law.A system that ONLY punishes offenders eventually hurts us all and does little that is meaningful for victims of crime."Justice" demands so much more. This book inspires us, as individuals and as a culture, to create a system that is stronger, wiser and ultimately much more effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Idealism is powerful and doable
Marie Hamilton's life puts flesh on aphorisms we love to trot out (Love your enemies. There is that of God in every person. Be the change you want to see.) but have a hard time envisioning in the messiness and ambiguities of real life.Maybe peacemaking is not an idealistic notion that can't be sustained when confronted with evil.Perhaps nonviolence is more powerful that we know.Certainly it is when Marie Hamilton is wielding it!This book would be an interesting choice for book clubs, religious groups, and young people whose ideas about the world and what part they want to play in it are still being formed.Pat Hunt, Chaplain, Mary Baldwin College, Staunton VA. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful photography
Kristin Capp is a wonderful photographer. We had a show which included some of her work, including photographs taken at the Hutterite community; whether as social commentary or simply as art, Capp captures essentials. A beautiful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The photographs calm your spirit like a meditation.
This is a book to return to over and over again. I've opened it in the midst of a hectic, demanding day and the clean black and white images made me feel refreshed and hopeful. The photographs embody a kind of peace I think we all yearn for.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opening adventure of a grossly-misunderstood people!
My name is Simone.I live in Oklahoma. My family and I have evangelized and sang all over the U.S. and Canada. We met a colony of Hutterian Brethren through a church pastor whom lives in PincherCreek, Alberta,Canada, whom invited us to preach at his church. We became really goodfriends with the Hutterites.I have been communicating by phone and letterover 11 years with them.I found out from my Hutterite friend Janet Walterfrom Lamona, Wash. that this book was coming out.I have actual picturesfrom this book that I've had for years from past letters. The Hutteritepeople usually don't associate with outsiders, but, by extraordinaryhappenstance, if invited into their way of life, they will be yourfriends-for-life; always possessing a place in their hearts.TheHutterites live in colonies and are a hard-working, God-fearing, andfamily-focused people.I love the Hutterites . . . so will you!
