4-0 out of 5 stars An inside look at Hare Krishna movement
I enjoy looking at other religions, including the Hare Krishnas as I take a class of students every year to the local temple to find out more about their beliefs and philosophy. Nori Muster was involved in the public relations part of the ISKCON and details a number of stories of corruption that took place in the leadership after the founder died. There were a number of moving places where the reader was able to experience the frustration that Nori must have felt. She was dedicated to her faith, regardless of how her leaders let her down. The book moves well and was a story that was well worth telling. The only frustration I had is that Nori did not let the reader into her personal life, especially her marriage with her husband (whom she is no longer married to). What was it like being married in this group? Did she abide by the teachings when it came to marriage (sex only for procreation)? What was it that caused the two of them to eventually split? And what does she hold today as truth? These were just a few issues that really could have used more explanation. Otherwise, this is an excellent book (I have the paperback edition, and I don't see that available for purchase) that ought to be considered by religion watchers everywhere. ... Read more

Excerpt: Dipak Narshibhai Patel (born 25 October 1958 in Nairobi, Kenya) played 37 Tests and 75 One Day Internationals for the New Zealand cricket team. A stylish middle order batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler, Patel started playing for Worcestershire in 1976, having moved to England in 1968. He continued to play for them until 1986, playing 236 first-class matches, scoring 9734 runs at 29.23, and taking 357 wickets at 36.66. Patel emigrated to New Zealand in 1986, although he had spent the last six winters in New Zealand, and this enabled him to qualify to play international cricket for New Zealand straight away. In the 1985/86 season, his first playing for Auckland, he scored 174 on debut, the highest ever debut score for the province. In his first two seasons in New Zealand, he scored 1234 runs at 38.56 and took 42 wickets at 26.69, so it was no surprise that he was called up to the Test team. Patel made his Test debut against the West Indies in 1987; he scored 18 and 20, both times being dismissed by Courtney Walsh, and bowled 3 overs. He made his ODI debut in the series that followed. His highest score in Tests came when he was run out for 99 against England in 1992. His best bowling figures of 6 for 50 also came in 1992 against Zimbabwe. In the 1992 World Cup, he was used as an opening bowler, initially against Australia, in an attempt to counteract the tactic of hitting over the in-field during the first 15 overs. This strategy paid off, and he was often used in the same role in other matches. Since retiring in 1997, he has coached at a provincial (first-class) level in New Zealand, notab...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3083608 ... Read more

Ranchor Prime is best known for his books on Hinduism and ecology. He's a disciple of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, and a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Ranchor Prime has translated the Bhagavad Gita into English. It was published with illustrations by B. G. Sharma as The Illustrated Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation With Commentary. He was brought up within the Roman-Catholic tradition. From a very early age he was "saturated with Catholic devotion". He lived in a cathedral, lived with Benedictine monks and was a choirboy. In the end of the 1960s, while studying at Chelsea College of Art and Design, he "very quickly lost faith in the materialistic sort of life". He started to look for something deep and spiritual and along with his friends experiment with LSD and other drugs. At the same time, he became interested in the "mystic East", which provided "a tremendous spiritual tradition but one that was different to the West". In 1970 he joined ISKCON, popularly known as the Hare Krishna movement. Richard came in contact with Hare Krishna mantra through the musical Hair, that had just arrived in London at...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3287501 ... Read more

Product Description
The Hare Krishna mantra, also referred to reverentially as the Maha Mantra ("Great Mantra"), is a sixteen-word Vaishnava mantra which first appears in the Kali-Santarana Upanishad, and which from the 16th century rises to importance in the Bhakti movement following the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. According to Gaudiya Vaishnava theology, this higher consciousness takes the form of pure love of God (Krishna). Since the 1960s, the mantra has been made well known outside of India by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and his International Society for Krishna Consciousness (commonly known as "the Hare Krishnas"). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Complex but Informative
I agree with Subal Das--this book is extremely complex. It is not accessible to someone who is new to Hindu thinking in general. For someone with an intermediate to advanced level of understanding of Hindu and Vaishnavist thinking, however, this book is a treasure. It has a number of type-o's, but they are not so extensive as to impede understanding. Its extensive use of Sanskrit terminology can be trying.Consider this book to be a kind of "graduate studies" in Vaishnavism.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Philosophical Classic
Dr. Kapoor presents an excellent summary of traditional Chaitanyaism. It is dense and full of technical Sanskrit terms. Best for those with some preliminary understanding of Chaitanya's philosophy. Great for the philosophically inclined. ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Contributions to popular culture involving direct reference to the Hare Krishna mantra, or the Hare Krishna movement include the following: After coming in contact with the Hare Krishnas in 1969, several of the Beatles took interest in the movement. This interest is reflected in songs later recorded by the band. In the 1980s, several bands and individuals from the punk-related straight edge subculture took interest in the Hare Krishna doctrines, leading to a number of prominent straight edgers becoming official members of the movement. Due to the influence of a Hare Krsna named Larry Pugliese, Krishna Consciousness found its way into the New York hardcore scene in the mid 1980s and became known as Krishnacore. Pugliese established a house in nearby northern New Jersey for fellow devotees to live in, and sponsored free food distribution (in Tompkins Square Park) and clothing drives as well as concerts for the punks and skinheads hanging out in what was then a rough and tough Lower East Side. Early devotees included John Joseph and Harley Flanagan of the band Cro-Mags, Ray Cappo of Youth of Today, and Vic DiCara, former guitarist for Los Angeles band Inside Out, who established quite possibly the most famous of all of the newly dubbed bands, namely 108. Krishnacore bands sing about Krishna and Krishna Consciousness the same way that a Christian band would sing about Jesus. Other notable Hare Krishna punk and hardcore musicians include: Shelter, Cro-Mags, Run Devil Run, Request Denied, Poly Styrene and Lora Logic of X-Ray Spex. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4585432 ... Excerpt: Sachinandana Swami (born 1954, Hamburg) is a Gaudiya Vaishnava guru, sannyasi, and one of the religious leaders of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (commonly known as the Hare Krishnas or ISKCON). Of German origin, he joined ISKCON in 1970 and was initiated by the movement's founder, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, in 1971. Sacinandana Swami is well known throughout ISKCON for his kirtana and public speaking. He teaches and writes prolifically on Vaishnavism and the Hare Krishna movement and has translated the Bhagavad Gita into German. His publications include The Nectarean Ocean of the Holy Name, The Gayatri Book, The Way of the Great Departure, The Art of Transformation, and Spiritual Tonic. Sacinandana Swami first came in contact with Gaudiya Vaishnavism after seeing Hare Krishna devotees on German TV in the late 1960s. "One day, I remember it was in television. I was a fan of the Rolling Stones. One of the members, the guitarist, had died from an overdose of drugs. I cried tears - my model had died. After this, an exciting new group, the Radha Krishna Temple, came on and sang the Hare Krishna mantra. I immediately felt deep solace." In 1970, a 16-year-old boy at the time, Sacinandana Swami "set off to introduce himself to the Hare Krishna community in Germany and began the life of learning, teaching and traveling that he continues to this day". In 1987 he became an initiating guru in ISKCON, and in 1989 took sannyasa. Sacinandana Swami has made a number pilgrimages to holy places in India, often traveling to Vrindavan for intensive 'japa' retreats. Excerpt: Hare Rama Hare Krishna is a 1971 Indian film directed by Dev Anand starring himself and Zeenat Aman. The film was a hit and a star-making vehicle for Zeenat Aman, who played a westernized hippie, and won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award,, as well as the BFJA Award for Best Actress.. The movie dealt with the decadence of the Hippie culture. It aimed to have an anti-drug message and also depicts some problems associated with Westernization such as divorce. Asha Bhosle won Filmfare Best Female Playback Award for the song "Dum Maro Dum", which was a huge hit. The music of the film was composed by Rahul Dev Burman and the lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi. The story for Hare Rama Hare Krishna actually came to Dev Anand's mind when he saw hippies and their fallen values in Kathmandu where he was on a visit after protests against his previous film Prem Pujari in Calcutta. He was low in spirits because his film had been opposed and some had burnt Prem Pujari's posters. The film is about a Montréal-based Indian family, the Jaiswals. The brother Prashant (Dev Anand) and sister Jasbir (Zeenat) have a good relationship as children. However, the parents quarrel and separate leaving Prashant with the mother and Jasbir with the father. Jasbir is repeatedly told that her mother and brother are dead and she eventually believes that she will never see Prashant again. She is ill-treated by her step mother and she runs away from home. Prashant grows up to be a pilot and he learns that Jasbir is in Kathmandu, Nepal with a group of hippies.
