Product Description
This collection of 16 articles represents a selection of the papers delivered in the course of a seminar (1995-1996) at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and its concluding joint symposium held at the Institute and Princeton University. Wide-ranging in scope, the volume covers messianic expectations from biblical times up to modern and contemporaneous adaptations including: diversity and variety of messianic expectations in antiquity; messianic movements at the time of the Crusades and around the fifth millennium (1240); the "Pseudo-Messiah" Sabbatai Avi in the early modern period; the philosopher Hermann Cohens' messianism; as well as the Lubavitch movement. Also included are investigations on pagan Graeco-Roman writings and messianic strands in the medieval and baroque Christian context. The section on the modern period contains contributions dealing with the Ahmaddiyya movement in India, messianic currents in the socio-political culture of the Weimar Republic as well as certain messianic aspects in the very recent so-called Branch Davidian community in Waco, Texas. The broad spectrum of analysis provides a re-evaluation of an apparently timeless phenomenon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very relevant and astounding book.
I have many books, which I consider valuable, some of which are worth many hundreds of dollars. However, this book is one of the most relevant and most important in my entire library. It is a must-read for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely Discovery and Historical Insight
I found this book fascinating with an historical insight I didn't learn in seminary. The first Christian Church was Jewish, connected to Mount Zion where the Upper Room had been built over King David's tomb, and the firstChristians used a symbol that combined the Menorah, Star of David, and Fishinto one pattern.Within a few centuries, this symbol was reduced to justthe Fish in the wake of Rome's purging of all Jewish characteristics out ofChristianity. The book contains pictures of archeological strikes of thesymbol that have been found - findings that have been suppressed by bothJewish Orthodox and Roman Catholic leaders. The first part of the booktraces the backdrop and development of the Essene community, its Messianicconnection with the House of David, and the elimination of its influence bythe time of the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D.The second half of the bookshows the significance of each part of the triune symbol and its meaningfor Jews and Christians today. If the foundation of Christianity isMessianic Judaism, this book is central to an understanding of the Church'sidentity and future and rightly calls for a reconciliation of Jew andGentile believers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A FASCINATING DISCOVERY
The Messianic Seal is an important archeological discovery, and this book is an excellent resource.Part one gives a brief history of the Essene sect with whom the Seal orignated, and part two expounds on thesignifigance that this discovery has to the Church and the world today. This is the definitive work regarding the Messianic Seal. ... Read more

64. The Messianic Idea in Judaism : And Other Essays on Jewish Spirituality

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinated
A fascinating collection of lectures. The discussion of some of the more bizarre, and yet intellectual followers of Shabtai Zvi into the 20th century is amazing.I had never understood antinomianism, but Scholem explains the thinking and rationale behind it brilliantly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jews gone wild
The first half of this book discusses the evolution and decay of the Sabbatai Zevi messianist movement: not just of its birth (discussed in more detail in Scholem's book Mystical Messiah) but also of its slow decay.(For readers unfamiliar with Zevi, a brief summary: in the mid-1660s, Jews throughout the world came to believe Zevi was the Messiah; after being threatened with execution by the Ottoman Empire, Zevi converted to Islam.Nevertheless, some Jews continued to believe in him until the 19th century).

Scholem proposes two possible causes for the survival of Sabbatianism after Zevi's apostasy.First, 17th-century kabbalah (the Jewish mystical tradition) saw Messianic renewal not just as a nationalist rebirth of a Jewish state, but as a more spiritual process transforming all of creation, ultimately leading to Messianic deliverance.Scholem speculates that kabbalism made it easier for Jews to trust their own personal experiences over historical reality; as a result, some Jews could not admit "that their own personal experience had been false and untrustworthy."Moreover, many Jews had left countries (most notably Spain) where they were forced to practice Judaism in secret; thus, they found it easy to believe that Zevi was doing the same.

Scholem also addresses the Sabbatians' split-up into multiple factions."Moderate" Sabbatians continued to follow halacha (Jewish law) believing that they were bound to do so until Messianic deliverance reappeared. But more radical Sabbatians either followed Zevi's lead by apostasizing, and/or by secretly rejecting halacha (Jewish law). The radicals believed that since the Messiah had come, the commandments of the Torah were abrogated, based on the idea of a "mystical Torah" of absolute freedom predating creation. Some radicals even suggested that Zevi (or even later Sabbatian leaders) was an incarnation of God.But as the memories of Zevi grew fainter and fainter, Sabbatianism decayed; some Sabbatians assimilated into Christianity and Islam, while in the 19th century, others embraced secularism or Reform Judaism.

Like Sabbatians, Hasidim embraced mysticism. But they focused on individual redemption rather than universal social redemption, thus reducing the temptation to expect imminent messianic deliverance.Scholem also points out that both Sabbatians and Hasidim embraced the concept of leaders "descending in order to rise" into the world of the less-holy.Where Sabbatians saw the "descent" of their Messiah as apostasy or as violations of halacha, Hasidim saw their rebbes "descending" into the realm of the mundane by teaching and leading their flock (rather than engaging in solitary communion with the Divine).

Most of the last third of the book is less interesting than Scholem's essays on Sabbatianism and Hasidism; to a greater extent than the first few, they focus on issues which require a very high level of cultural literacy (such as a book review of a now-obscure book, or a discussion of Martin Buber's German translation of the Torah).A fortunate exception is Scholem's essay on the Star of David; he shows that the hexagram was not a purely Jewish symbol until the 14th century, when the Jews of Prague placed it on a flag (perhaps because its use on magical amulets was then common). The symbol did not spread to eastern Europe until the 19th century, when the emancipated Jews of Europe wanted to show their respectability by having a symbol in their synagogues as simple to understand as the Christian cross.

4-0 out of 5 stars Discourse on Messianic Judiasm
The large majority of this book discusses the rise and fall of messianism through the medieval period and how it affects Judaism today. There are also other essays present that discuss the history of the Star of David symbolism and the mystical golems.

The author presents the case of how Sabbatianism and Hasidism influenced the messianic themes that are prevalent in today's Judiasm. Some of the more interesting readings cover the notion of Sabbatianism and its transformation to a sect that believes in a messiah that pointed the way to redemption through sin as a result of its heretical leadership.

Identifying some of the religious inadequacies of Sabbatianism and how they gave rise to Hasidism and the notion of a messianism that focuses on self and personal redemption, the author presents a plausible argument worthy of serious debate for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Messianism, Antinomianism, and Jewish Spirituality
Gershom Scholem, recognized as one of the foremost academic scholars of Jewish mysticism of the 20th century, presents here an excellent series of essays exploring the crises caused by fits of messianism in Judaism, especially the Sabbatian crisis.

The essays include:

Toward an Understanding of the Messianic Idea in Judaism- details the concept of the messiah (mosiach) in the Hebrew exoteric traditions throughout history.

The Messianic Idea in Kabbalism- explores the origins of kabbalistic messianism in Isaac Luria and how this paved the way for Sabbatai Zevi.

The Crisis of Tradition in Jewish Mysticism- discusses the antinomian tendencies of messianic movements (esp. in the Sabbatians and post-Sabbatians, such as the Frankists and the Donme) and how Jewish law is abridged by proclamations of a new law, which is further advanced in the next essay,

Redemption through Sin- a more thorough look at antinomianism in Judaism, and how it stems from the idea of Spiritual Torah vs. Written Torah.

Further essays explore the Donme movement in greater detail, takes a look at a rare Sabbatian will from a Sabbatian who lived in New York in the 1800's, further essays on Hasidism and it's retort to Messianism, as well as the mystical aspects of Devekut (Hasidic "Cleaving to God"), and further essays in Jewish scholarship and an essay on the birth of the Star of David as a Jewish symbol.

Highly recommended to all parties interested in more advanced scholarship in Kabbalah and Jewish Heresy. ... Read more

Know What to Answer Missionaries

Many millions of dollars are annually spent by Christian missionary groups all over the world to directly target Jews for conversion to Christianity. This includes complete openness, such as when they clearly say they are trying to get Jews to convert, and very often it is disguised as some sort of "Jewish" outreach. The latter group includes calling themselves "Messianic" Jews or having "Messianic" synagogues.

The author does not intend to use this publication as a means of attacking Christianity but rather as a means of defense to Jews that are so massively targeted by Christian missionaries in annual multi-million dollar campaigns to betray their Heritage and God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Counter Missionary Book
This book is short but packed with all you need to see why Judaism can not accept Jesus/YEshua as a god, son of god or messiah. It brings the 'proofs' missionaries have brought since JEsus' times for centuries as they tried to convert Jews, whether by the sword (Inquisition, Crusades) , expulsions (most of Europe), or massive missionarizing campagns. This book is short and straght to the point! (see my comments to Midrasin's post via the comments link by his message)

Here's an idea of the style of what's in this info packed small book.
It appears there was one "point of inference" used by missionaries from the TOrah ("Old TEstament") I forgot to bring in the book. So here's what I have to say regarding it. For more get the book - it's all there. :)

ISaiah 9
[6] For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty "Ail" (Hebrew word) , The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
[7] Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

In these verses missionaries say it shows a "son" will be born and he seems to be called G-d. Firstly, the Hebrew word here is "AIL". That means "Mighty". G-d is refered to as "Mee Kamocha BaAilim Adonie" - Who is like you among the Mighty, Oh L-rd. It does indeed sometimes refer to G-d or can to an angel or the "mighty". When refering to G-d it means the AlMighty. Many commentators explain it says indeed that G-d who is "Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty "Ail" (Hebrew word) , The everlasting Father," shall call this child the "Prince of Peace".
It refers to King Hezekiah, in who's days shall come peace. In his days the Assyrians tried to conquer Jerusalem and laid siege and miraculously the Assyrian army died in their sleep (see Chronicles 2 Chap 32). In Hebrew it says "VKara Shmo", which can mean his name shall be calledWonderful, etc or "Shall be called By the Wonderful, etc" - shall be called the "Prince of Peace".
However to proclaim something massive such as that god shall have a son, and that this "son" shall change the religoun as until now it was for so many centuries, would not be hidden in such a manner in these 2 verses. Rather it foretells of King Hezekia and reassures the King of Judah of G-ds protection of Judah for much time to come.

Do they mean only Jesus would talk of kindness and peace but JUdaism did not before him?
Here are just a few verses from the Torah (Old Testament)
Exodus 22
[22] Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child.
[25] If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury.
Exod.23
[1] Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.
[4] If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his donkey going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again.
[5] If thou see the donkey of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.
Leviticus 19
[13] Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.
[14] Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before the blind,
[18] thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself:
[34] But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the L-RD your G-d.
Lev 25
[35] And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee.

Indeed there has NOT been Peace from Jesus time, consider the destruction of the Temple and 2 Roman wars upon Judea since and of course the countless wars all over the world to the present.
Is Jesus a "Prince of Peace"? Wars Fought by Christians -> Crusades, Empire wars of England, France, Spain, Germany, Russia, Hundred Years War, US Revolution, French Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War in US, Sinco Demayo, Spanish American War, WW1, WW2, Nato versus Serbia, Falkland Islands War. This does not count of course all the many other wars the world has seen since Jesus time. Indeed many tens of millions have died in wars by the Standard Bearers of the "Prince of peace".

For those that have been born and bred and in communities of such that a man killed over 2000 years ago is a man-god, messiah and son of god at the same time it's hard to see the falsehood of such notions. Such premises ordinarily shouldn't even see the light of day. Re-forumulating words in the large verbose Scriptures to somehow suit such ideas is really trying to remake the Scriptures to suit their desires. How can god be killed or why would he literally have a son (from an engaged woman at that) that would then be killed and re-born. It's actually all to attract converts from the Pagan world of those times. But for many living like so many hundreds of millions of people do is very tempting, so they would overlook Truth just to "be accepted". Abraham did not do that when the world was Pagan. This book will help Guide You To the Truth You Know in Your Heart. Hear Oh Israel the Lord Our G-d The L-rd is One. Say it in Hebrew - Shma Yisroel Adonie Elohainoo Adonie Echad.

1-0 out of 5 stars A sad little book
This book is the latest in a steady trickle of books attempting to fend off attempts by Christian missionaries to persuade Jewish people to recognize Jesus as their true Messiah.

I was really surprised by this book (I could almost say disappointed!) as I was expecting it to say something new. However, it really says nothing new in its meagre 40 pages.

I am really not sure why some of today's Jewish religious leaders are so fearful of following Messiah Jesus. Is it because they think that Jewish people will lose their ethnic identity by doing so?Or do they fear that Jewish people will inevitably lose their traditions and culture.Solomon writes: `My message to those that might be susceptible to missionary or "messianic" efforts is that we owe it to ourselves, our ancestors, our people, 3000 years of solid heritage, to give it a good hard look before tossing it out for the sake of assimilation" (p.3.)But why cannot Jewish Christians retain their Jewish customs and still follow Jesus as Messiah?Surely it is a matter of personal choice.

I can't think of anything more calculated to reduce the size of the Jewish community, and drive pious Jewish people away from Jewish tradition, than disowning them simply because they become convinced that they should follow Jesus as their Messiah.Yet still they do it!For another way of seeing things, I would recommend Professor Dan Cohn-Sherbok's book: "Messianic Judaism" (Continuum International Publishing Group - Pinter, 2000)

Furthermore, the New Testament itself makes it plain that there will always be a Jewish people at least until the end of the age (Romans 11:25-32; Luke 21:24).Why is that?It is because God Himself has a special interest in preserving a group of people of Jewish identity. If God Himself has determined that there will always be Jews in the world, howevermuch nonJews might try to wipe them out, what is there to fear?Is God so incapable of fulfilling His promises to the Jews that He needs the pathetic efforts of people like this writer who, out of zeal for God, end up distorting the truth?

As for the theological objections raised in this book, they have already been answered in these, and other, books:-

1. Michael L. Brown in: `Answers to Jewish Objection to Jesus':
Vol.1: General and historical objections (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, 2000),
Vol.2: Theological objections (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, 2000),
Vol.3: Messianic Prophecy objections (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, 2003),
Vol.4: New Testament Objections (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, 2007).
[Vol.5: Traditional Jewish Objections (still in preparation)]

2. Eric V. Snow in: `A Zeal for God Not According to Knowledge: A refutation of Judaism's arguments against Christianity'. 2nd ed. (Lincoln, NE: iUniverse, 2005).

Product Description
The coming of the messiah is anticipated by millions of people of many faiths as the ultimate salve for our spiritual lives and as a way to finally make the world a better place.

There Is No Messiah… And You're It examines the history of messianic hope and anticipation, its evolution in Judaism and Jewish history, and other interpretations of "messiah" that shed new light on what it means to usher in the "kingdom of God." This fascinating book is our call to see ourselves as the fulfillment of, not the anticipators of, messianic change.

Drawing from the Bible, the Talmud, rabbinic sources, and modern-day scholars, Rabbi Robert Levine provides us with an accessible, fascinating understanding of messianic vision, as well as false messiahs throughout Jewish history. He challenges the powerful idea of messiah that has survived in the heart, soul, and ethos of the Jewish people, and reveals the immediacy of the messianic presence in our day--in our own lives.

Compelling and controversial, There Is No Messiah…And You're It inspires us to embody the noblest values of Jewish tradition--prayer, study, mitzvot and tzedakah--and embrace our own messianic potential to heal the world. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More than just a Title
I have to disagree with other reviewers' oversimplification that the 'title says it all'. There are many facets to this idea, and they are explored from a unique perspective. I have found myself reevaluating some of my longstanding ideological structures. Buy it and read it. You'll be challenged to be a better person and a better human.

4-0 out of 5 stars Each individual can bring about peace and justice
This book does not really posit a theory that hasn't been discussed many times before. The title of the book clearly states what Rabbi Levine's theory is: that we cannot wait for a great leader to usher in a messianic age, rather, that all of us, in our own way, must bring about a better world. Rabbi Levine does a nice job of surveying the idea of the Messiah in Judaism. He examines references in the books of the Prophets. He then gives a historical survey of messianism in Judaism, from the earliest followers of Jesus, to messianic figures such as Bar Kochba, Sabbatai Zvi and Jacob Frank. In times of turmoil, when the hopes of the Jewish community were at their lowest, many Jews found renewed hope in the belief that the Messiah has arrived.

These hopes often had tragic consequences. Many of the Jews of Jerusalem, during the days of Roman occupation, followed the charismatic Bar Kochba into battle. With his fierce determination, there were early military victories but ultimately, the rebellion was crushed with devestating results. The tragic decimation of the Jewish community may have been the worst disaster suffered by the Jews until the onset of the even more horrific Holocaust of the 20th Century. Sabbatai Zvi and Jacob Frank, more than a millenium and a half later, also had rabid follewers who, believing each was the messiah, gave up strict observance of Judaism based on the blasphemous examples set by these false messiahs.

The point of the book is that we cannot sit and wait for a messiah. If there was an actual Messiah, we should not wait for his appearance passively but instead, seek to better the world as we await the messianic event. If there is no messianic leader, then it is for each of us to bring about positive change in the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, good Analysis, somewhat repetitive
The best part of this book is its title.Once you know the title, you pretty much don't have to read the book.
Definitely, once you read the first chapter you have the main idea which is this:The messiah is not a specific individual who will save the world but rather a belief that every person, doing his or her part, together can save the world.
The author does a good job exploring the evolution of the messianic idea in Judaism, although he is really just quoting from other books, mostly Gershom Sholem.
His thesis is that the messianic idea has continually swung between viewing the Messiah as a saviour independent (or despite) of the Jews' behavior versus the Messiah as a saviour who inspires Jews to become more holy.
The author obviously espouses the latter idea but takes it one step further- you don't need a specific person to inspire you, just do it now!
This is a wonderful idea which at this point is definitely not in line with the traditional/Orthodox view of the Messiah. However, the idea is very powerful and perhaps will become the mainstream idea in the future.
Definitely read this book to learn about this provative and inspring idea. However, to really understand the history of the Jewish Messianic idea, I would recomment more basic texts such as from Gershom Scholem. ... Read more

Meet Cousin John Dualey

Hang down ya head John Dualey
Hang down ya head and cry
Hang down ya head John Dualey
Or Po-Boy ya bound to die

Ya tryin’ to eat your cake, John Dualey?
Eat it and keep it all too?
Common folk around all tell me
It’s sumpin you jes can’t do

God’s got some Jews now b’lievin’
Or maybe you jus’ won’t see
He’s grafting-in Gentiles with ‘em
Gonna break all Israel free

Messianics moving in His love
He’s made ‘em His living key
To release resurrection power
And set all Israel free

All Israel shall be saved
A few Gentiles grafted in
God wrote it in the book o’ Romans
Where in the world have ya been?

Ya plowing a blind mule Dualey
Mmilking on an old dry cow
Wake up 'n smell the revelation
Grab a resurrection plow

(Apologies to John’s cousin, Tom Dooley—who never practiced dual covenant replacement theology a day of his life.)

We are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms. Use every piece of God's armor to resist the enemy in the time of evil, so that after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground ...Eph 6:12-14 (NLT)

CRI-TI-CAL NOTE!
I will NOT repeat this over and over so it is imperative that you get this upfront and downgood. This is not PRIMARILY a Hagee problem. It is a deceiving spirit with a doctrine of demons problem. Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons... (1 Tim 4:1 NKJV)

We are NOT fighting against John Hagee who is made of flesh and blood, but we ARE fighting against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, and against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms as manifested in bygone days through Haman, Hitler, and a whole host of other flesh-and-blooders. We are fighting against these principalities and powers with prayers and hope that the John Hagees of our day and the people they influence may be freed up to become builders of the kingdom of God on earth according to the Word and plan of God until it has become “as in heaven.”

Read that two more times to make sure you got it good. Why? Because up ahead you will read a no-holds barred, in your face expose—no punches pulled. Of course, Hagee is spotlighted. He is lead carrier of that which must be destroyed. Either he parts ways with it, or else he goes down with it. You got it? If you can’t handle that, don’t waste your time reading any further. This is serious-as-a-stroke stuff.

Introduction: Who is MESSIANIC Israel?
This nation God owns includes all people carrying Jewish DNA who have received Jesus of Nazareth as their Messiah and are caught up into a lifestyle around Him—whether on the Land of God’s Israel or on the sands of another shore. This nation God owns scripturally includes some non-Jewish, Jesus-obedient souls grafted-into Nation Israel's olive tree, i.e., not caught up in their own church importance, not trying to get believing Jews to forsake their responsibility as God’s Israel Nation in order to “join their church.”

Hello Church! How smart is that? The whole tree is somehow supposed to “humble itself” and get itself fitted into wild olive branches instead of staying a tree, giving root and life-sustenance to the limp limb-scragglies pimping the true Church, messing with the true bride. Not nice! And yes, I do know about the “one new man.” He lives—and will rule this physical, natural world—in and through Church empowered Messianic Israel—with or without Reverend Hagee’s endorsement.

This book is about that. ... Read more
