Product Description

First published in Kanesville, Iowa, in 1849, The Frontier Guardian was used by church leaders to help Mormons there focus on the ultimate westward goal.  Yet the newspaper was much more than an ecclesiastical forum.  Local, national, and international news was included along with information about the westward trek.  The Frontier Guardian  is a window into this way-station for westward emigration, illuminating the religious, social, economic, and political aspects of this frontier community.

Book includes a searchable DVD of all issues of all of the newspspers, complete with scholarly annotations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
Written in an easy, very interesting style. The topics are pertinent to a new convert and informative to a long-time member. A good basic book for every LDS library. I would suggest that the authors update the original 1998 edition.I do understand that the church is updating programs quickly using YOU TUBE videos and on-line news stories and periodicals.Great resource for every Latter Day Saint.

4-0 out of 5 stars A LOT of info on organizational aspects
I am a memeber(over a year) and I'm autistic, so things work a little different for me.I did like the book alot.It answered alot of questions I have about the Church now.At first I just wanted doctrinal information, but now I'm interested in Church oragnization.Leadership, missions, and temples....This book covers all that and more. The only thing is that I'm glad I didn't run into it sooner because it would have been WAY too much for me.It seems that this may be the type of info most often sought by those not on the spectrum, so I don't forsee many other people feeling that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
My husband was an adult convert to The L.D.S. Church and found this book invaluable. It explains some of the mundane, but interesting things to things of importance that the L.D.S. culture and way of life has.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference
If you are a new member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this book could be indispensible. It goes above and beyond to explain a lot about the LDS Church's organization at every level. It does not say much about doctrine, so if you are investigating the LDS Church this is not the book for you.At the end of every chapter, the authors answer common questions from converts, which is also very helpful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Wonderful accounts of men and women in harm's way who make right choices in the midst of wars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Important Book
If you've read Lt. Col. Grossman's "On Combat" or "On Killing", then you know that the spiritual aspect of war is crucial to the psychological well-being, coping, and healing of a warrior, and this book just goes to further prove that and show how it works for some.

I bought this for my husband in the military and read it myself.
I liked that this book gave a perspective on the war that goes beyond politics and underscores the aspect of "winning the minds and hearts of the people" in a real way that isn't just sappy or emotional.

Many of the Soldiers were very inspiring and shows that you really can combine all that is necessary for coping with combat AND the spirit of God.

I especially appreciated the stories that depicted the relief efforts for the Iraqi and Afghani children. God has not forgotten his little ones. This book reminds us that there are two parts to war--the killing and the liberating. The blood and the spirit.

Even though the book is based on LDS (Mormon) faith, I highly recommend it for all denominations. Something for everyone.

I purchased this book for my son and he said it arrived in mint condition and the service was prompt.thank you, I will continue to use Amanzon for future purchases...satisfied in Ok, USA

1-0 out of 5 stars Faith in the Service
I was very disappointed in the book. The stories are written very poorly and they are not very interesting.I am sorry I bought this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good news coming out of the war
This collection of stories is a wonderful depiction of the 'other' side of the war. Too often we hear of the horrors of war. Yes, they exist, but through this book we can read of good things that happen and how the faith of these service men and women, contractors, and family members has been strengthened through the experiences in which they are blessed to be a part. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars too biased for comfort
Firstly, I have to say, I did not finish this book - not because of lack of interest or time, but because it was much too biased a work to read. The author early on clearly states she is a Mormon and will use personal experiences and church doctrine in her book, but just saying that doesn't make it OK.The first bad taste in my mouth was in the preface where she, out of nowhere, says where we can get a Book of Mormon (including a web addess).

I think there is a difference between using stories from one's own personal life and just outwardly promoting a cause. For the most part, she is an apologist, especially concerning women and gays (for the latter, "the seeds of tolerance are growing" - who is she kidding here???).I thought this book would offer a somewhat-objective viewpoint on, believe it or not, contemporary Mormonism - all I got was one of their TV commercials that trick you into watching until the end... but in print form.

However, there were some instances (not a whole lot) wherein I learned a few things that cleared up a few misconceptions I myself had about Mormon thought. It was surprising to see the scale of converts they have each year.(A statistic which the author never failed to mention to show what a great religion Mormonism is becoming!)All in all, it's an easy read, but not a worthy one. ... Product Description
This captivating history begins in a time when the "old school" of American medicine over-emphasized bloodletting and purging, usually by means of massive doses of calomel, and use of "mineral" medications such as arsenic and strychnine, methods that eased many a person to a premature death. Is it any wonder that Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and many others on the American frontier preferred faith healing and the botanic medicine of Samuel Thomson? This second edition of the classic "Medicine and the Mormons" provides a wealth of information presented in a readable and usable format on a subject that accommodates the interests of many including:* A thoroughly interesting and entertaining overview of medicine as it was practiced during the 18th through early 20th centuries* A close examination of the medical problems encountered by Joseph Smith and his family prior to the restoration of the Church in 1830* Descriptions of the health issues encountered in the Mormon movement westward, including the cholera endemic that ravaged Zion's camp and the difficulties of the Missouri colonization* A revealing look at the severe medical challenges posed by the settlement of the city of Nauvoo, in the swampy lowlands of the Mississippi River shore.* Details of the formidable medical problems encountered in the westward migration of the Mormons and in the epic march of the Mormon Battalion.* Descriptions of botanical remedies used during the Utah territorial period* An account of Brigham Young's callings of missionaries and women to the East to attend medical schools* Glimpses into the important role of the Relief Society in the training of doctors, midwives and nurses and running of an early Utah hospital* Commentary on the LDS Hospital system ... Product Description
For many families, scripture study is a challenge at best.Too often, it means the same old thing – quickly going around the room with each person reading a verse or two.Isn’t there more that parents can do to bring the power of the scriptures into their families?

Scripture Study for Latter-day Saint Families offers a solid answer: Yes!This power-packed resource book is full of great ideas for family scripture study.Parents will thrill as they open up chapters and discover activities, object lessons, stories, quotations, and insights that will help them lead their families through the Doctrine and Covenants.

The authors write, "Every effort has been made to make this book simple to use, even for children. As you thumb through its pages, you will notice that it follows the Doctrine and Covenants sequentially.Creative teaching ideas have been provided for every section, for Joseph Smith – History, and for the Articles of Faith. In addition to the teaching ideas, historical background is provided for each section, as well as biographical sketches of people mentioned in the Doctrine and Covenants.Object lessons, activities, scripture insights, prophetic statements, discussion questions, stories, and many other learning aids are provided to help your family unlock the scriptures and deepen their testimonies."

Imagine what might happen as a result of studying the scriptures together. As President Ezra Taft Benson promised, "When individual members and families immerse themselves in the scriptures regularly and consistently…testimonies will increase.Commitment will be strengthened.Families will be fortified.Personal revelation will flow."

When Alma the Younger was in the darkest abyss of sin, it wasn’t the words of his seminary teacher that came to his mind but the teachings of his father. And when Enos’s soul hungered, it wasn’t the teachings from a Young Men’s president that he remembered; instead, it was the spiritual teachings of his father. And although the stripling warriors did not doubt, it was not because of what they learned from a Primary teacher; it was the words of their mothers that strengthened their faith.

It is not the job of institutions, including the Church, to teach and raise our children.Primarily, that job belongs to parents. The purpose of this book is tohelp you in that sacred responsibility. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
The author, Steven Shields, is a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (RLDS, headquartered in Missouri) who used to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS,headquartered in Utah).

When Joseph Smith Jr. died, his followers couldnot agree among themselves who ought to succeed him, so many"Mormon" denominations were founded (there are now somewherebetween 200 and 1000 different "Mormon" denominations). The RLDSbelieved that Joseph Smith III should succeed his father, the LDS followedBrigham Young.

Steven Shields' concise, easy-to-read, and remarkablynon-polemical book compares and contrasts RLDS and LDS doctrines on anumber of major issues like the nature of God, revelation, salvation, andso forth.

As a non-Mormon, I especially recommend this book to othernon-Mormons. It illustrates, for example, the diversity of Mormon beliefs, which Utah-centered LDS missionaries at your door will never mention. It'salso useful if you want to compare and contrast your own beliefs to thebeliefs of both RLDS and LDS Mormons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the "WHY"
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, my bishop recommended this book to me when a non-member friend and his questions caused me to doubt the rationality behind my religious beliefs. My friend would ask many questions about the church which I could answer on my own but then he'd want me to justify the answer with either biblical references or with examples from historical theologies. Reading this book helped me understand why the LDS church beliefs make sense. It's perfect for those who need to hear the logical reasoning behind this religion. I found Widtsoe's writing different and somewhat difficult. It's definitely not leisurely reading but once you are comfortable with his writing technique, it becomes very insightful. He leaves out the biased side (since he was a member himself) and explains why the LDS church is a rational theology. I love this book and ended up buying it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Look at (and into) Church of Jesus Christ
This overview book expounds many of the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, along the line of "Gospel Principles," and is a very good read, considering Elder Widtsoe was an emigrant form Norway. He covers the basics, but as President Hinckley has said, we learn by repetition. For those who are a fan of Widtsoe, this is an essential addition to their library.

The only drawback being that it is was designed for used in priesthood meetings, so it is not designed for non-Saints.For anyone interesting in "first contact" with the Latter-day Saints, I would recommend reading "The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ," or "Standing for Something" by Gordon B. Hinckley, the current world leader of the Church.Don't drink below the horses, including myself!

It should be noted that Brother Widtsoe comes from the point of view of a chemist and describes our theology in terms of rationality and a science. C. S. Lewis warned about "Christianity And," (Screwtape Letters, chapter 25) such as "Christianity and Pacifism," or "Christianity and Vegetarianism," the problem being that we are diluting the Gospel and rewriting it in the light of our own hobbies or profession.

True, our theology is rational and can stand the scrutiny of a Thomas Aquinas or a Jesse Ventura, but it is not the product of a test-tube or a syllogism. In other words, Joseph Smith didn't get our religion from re-shuffling verses of the bible, or just deep thinking or pondering, but he got revelations. He said, "I have got all the truth which the Christian world possessed, and an independent revelation in the bargain, and God will bear me off triumphant." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 376)

Despite this one point, would recommend this book for a new member learning, a non-member curious, or an old member wanting to review basics.C. S. Lewis also said that we should alternate between reading old books, and new books, since the old ones have stood the test of time, whereas the new books, such as "Believing Christ," or John Bytheway books are still on trial.I'm not saying the are bad, but that there is a verdict of history associated with "Jesus the Christ," or "Mormon Doctrine" that these striplings do not yet have.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book converted my father
This is an unusual review, as I have not read the book. But I noted thatno-one else has reviewed it, so somebody has to say something. My fatherwas found by LDS missionaries in 1961. He has a great love of science, andnaturally had many questions. Someone gave him a copy of this book, and hewas convinced. He has a rational answer to most questions, and this bookshaped his attitudes. I have not read the book, but it has indirectlydefined my life and the lives of others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars well-rounded, engaging and scholarly overview
This book is sprinkled with interesting, little-known facts about the LDS church as it transitioned from the first generation of leadership in the nineteenth century into the next hundred years that made up the twentieth century.By integrating the larger canvas of American socio-economic development as a backdrop, the author overlays and then highlights LDS history with pithy stories, pictures and sidebars of the actions and reactions of church leadership to the ever changing political landscape.Reading it helps clarify the development of various Mormon doctrines including stances on polygamy, tithing, welfare and missionary work. The book is well balanced and matter-of-fact in its tone. Those unfortunate enough to be predisposed to despise Mormons and their theology will find the author an apologist because his work lacks the bitter diatribes they revel in.Certain doctrinaire Mormons (convinced beyond all hope or reason that the church is a stainless work of complete perfection) may wince at the evidence that any lack of unity ever existed in the high councils of the church. But all this does is serve to underscore the fact that this tome is a well-rounded, engaging and scholarly overview of last 100-years of LDS history. It is a hopeful, praiseworthy effort, well worth reading by members as well as those interested in knowing more about LDS history. ...
