Kenana becomes a woman
You Never Called Me Princess I am the author of a modern day story about a young girl who wanted her father to call her princess. So I enjoyed reading about a true princess. Mesopotamian Maiden is the second book in a trilogy.It is about a young princess in ancient history who married a prince. In the previous book, her husband died about the same time she became pregnant. The problem was that she had been raped by a fallen angel.Who would be the father of her baby? Mesopotamian Maiden unravels the mystery. The surprise is discovering her true love.

Wonderful fictional romance with an inspirational story
With her husband Prince Jubal now dead, young Kenana is made Queen of Adah, a fact that does not sit well with her eldest stepson and breeds unrest amongst him and his allies.

However, Kenana's first priority is the impending birth of her child, a babe that might not be her husband's, but the progeny of the Nephilim who took advantage of her so many months before.Will her son be human?Will he be good, or inherit the evil nature of the Nephilim?

Meanwhile, the enemies of Kenana and Adah have amassed an army to march against them.Her trusted friend, Asher, returns just in time to deliver her baby and to spirit them both away to safety from the war-minded Nephilim.

Has Asher returned only as her servant and protector?Or is there more to his feelings for Kenana?

Having previously read Verna Hargrove's GLORIOUS COMPANION, which begins the story of Kenana and ends with quite the cliffhanger, I was very interested to see how this wondrous tale ends in MESOPOTAMIAN MAIDEN.I will say right up front that MESOPOTAMIAN MAIDEN is really a continuation of the story begun in that first book, so I highly recommend reading them in order to best experience this story.

In my review for the previous book, I mentioned that romance did not feel like the primary focus of the story, but in this sequel the romance is much more prevalent, although the other elements have as strong a presence as the romance.

As the story progresses, we enjoy the opportunities that Kenana has to obtain closure in some areas of her life, along with the new possibilities that open up for her.Kenana comes to understand more fully what is happening in the world around her, and her own family's role in the future of mankind.

Asher's return introduces some very interesting surprises in the story, for both Kenana and the reader.She and we see this man in a new light - although he was always an intriguing character, he plays a much larger part in this book than I ever suspected.

What also makes the plot interesting is that we see the world before the Great Flood, with a fictionalized account of some of the events that led mankind to that disastrous event, showing a bright spot of hope and faith in a world that was speeding rapidly towards its own doom.These bits of biblical history lend MESOPOTAMIAN MAIDEN an undeniably inspirational slant.

Congratulations to Ms. Hargrove for a moving conclusion to a wonderful series!

A Wonderful Sequel!
Okay, so, yes, the author is my mother, but I can also be a fan of hers, too, right? Yes, my opinion might be a little biased, but I did truly love this novel. I thought it was a wonderful follow-up to the first in the series (Glorious Companion). Without giving away spoilers to the first novel, this book continues the saga of princess Kenana (who is now a queen). These books are an intriguing blend of romance, adventure and spirituality. A fascinating resource
In the year 2004 B.C., the city of Ur fell to an army from the east (the end of Ur III). As was not uncommon in the ancient east, a "lamentation" was written to explain what happened and why, and simply to lament the destruction wrought by foreigners. In comparatively recent times, this lamentation was discovered in several different forms, in several different locations. In this 1989 work, Professor Piotr Michalowski examines the lamentation in depth.

Chapter 1 deals with the contents of the lamentation within the Sumerian context. Chapters 2, 3 and 6 deal with the various sources or manuscripts of the lamentation, while chapter 5 is a philological commentary. However, my favorite part of the book is chapter 4, which is a wonderful composite text, both in Sumerian and English. This is a mere 16 pages (for the English translation), but is quite interesting, and is very easy to read.

Let me make one thing clear, this book is intended for scholars, and I am not one (an armchair scholar only). That said, though, I did find this to be an interesting book, and a fascinating resource. Professor Michalowski's translation is eminently readable, being both interesting and very clear. Therefore, if you are interested in ancient Sumer (as I am), then I would highly recommend that you read this book. ... Read more

The first truly comprehensive overview
VerSteeg breaks new ground in this "Early Mesopotamian Law". Most books about early Mesopotamia discuss Hammurabi and his "law collection' in isolation.There has never been an introductory text about Mesopotamian law in itself. This book is based on translations of literature, history and other texts.

The ancient laws have been arranged using modern topics, so criminal law, for example, is discussed in one chapter.These, however, are not bare bones translations, which would be overwhelming to most readers.VerSteeg has sifted through the formulaic jargon and phraseology of the laws and made the laws easier to read and understand. History teachers, ministers and lawyers will be interested in the 'jurisprudential' discussions of how these laws reflect the values and moral reasoning of their societies.This book is accessible to an educated general reader, without assuming previous knowledge of cuneiform languages like Akkadian or Old Babylonian, or a background in law. ... Fascinating, a goldmine of information
This fascinating book was published in 1998, and reflects an up-to-date understanding on the watercourses of Babylonia. Like the Nile, the Tigris and Euphrates rivers were subject to a yearly flooding, which brought a great deal of rich silt, which helped to create the Mesopotamian riverine complex. However, as the rivers deposited this silt, they rose in level, until they exploded their banks and took up new courses. This book, examines the mechanics of this hydrology, and its effects.

Overall, I found this to be a fascinating book. The authors go a long way towards showing that any ancient map of Mesopotamia should not be drawn with the present courses of the rivers used, as the rivers have moved repeatedly throughout history, with cities actually changing which side of the river they were on! (Or, more truthfully changing which side of them the river flowed past.)

Now, my biggest complaint is that while the bulk of this book is in English, some of it is in French. But, that said, this is a goldmine of information about ancient Mesopotamia, and how the river courses (not to mention the Gulf shoreline) have changed. I highly recommend this book to any scholar of ancient Mesopotamia and it environment.
