Product Description
This pioneering work traces the emergence of the modern and contemporary art of Muslim South Asia in relation to transnational modernism and in light of the region's intellectual, cultural, and political developments.

Art historian Iftikhar Dadi here explores the art and writings of major artists, men and women, ranging from the late colonial period to the era of independence and beyond. He looks at the stunningly diverse artistic production of key artists associated with Pakistan, including Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Zainul Abedin, Shakir Ali, Zubeida Agha, Sadequain, Rasheed Araeen, and Naiza Khan. Dadi shows how, beginning in the 1920s, these artists addressed the challenges of modernity by translating historical and contemporary intellectual conceptions into their work, reworking traditional approaches to the classical Islamic arts, and engaging the modernist approach towards subjective individuality in artistic expression. In the process, they dramatically reconfigured the visual arts of the region. By the 1930s, these artists had embarked on a sustained engagement with international modernism in a context of dizzying social and political change that included decolonization, the rise of mass media, and developments following the national independence of India and Pakistan in 1947.

Bringing new insights to such concepts as nationalism, modernism, cosmopolitanism, and tradition, Dadi underscores the powerful impact of transnationalism during this period and highlights the artists' growing embrace of modernist and contemporary artistic practice in order to address the challenges of the present era.

Product Description
The author of The Gospel of Inclusion continues to rouse organized religion as he raises controversial issues and provides enlightening answers to the deepest questions about God and faith.

What is God? Where is God? Who is the one true God? Questions such as these have driven a thousand human struggles, through war, terrorism, and oppression. Humanity has responded by branching off into multiple religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam—each one pitted against the other. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

In God Is Not a Christian, nor a Jew, Muslim, Hindu . . . , the provocative and acclaimed Bishop Carlton Pearson follows up on his celebrated first book, The Gospel of Inclusion, to tackle these questions and many more, exploring new ideas about God and faith and putting forth the stunning assertion that God belongs to no particular religion but is an ever-loving presence available to all. For these beliefs, Bishop Pearson lost his thriving Pentecostal ministry but was catapulted instead into a greater pulpit. His readership has grown through appearances on national television and an extensive speaking schedule. With the world in the midst of a holy war, there is no better time for the wisdom of Bishop Pearson to reach a global audience.

Bishop Pearson’s many loyal fans, along with new readers, will surely welcome this provocative and eye-opening exploration of a deeper faith, one that goes far beyond any fundamentalist way of thinking, be it Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, etc. Simply put, Bishop Pearson dares to tell the truth so many others are too afraid to face. ... This book hits every false nail of Christianity squarely on the head. I too am a wounded and recovering fundamentalist and am still experiencing the pains of rejecting the Fear, Guilt, Ignorance, and Sin mentality that pervades modern religion today. My family has all but disowned me (showing their Christian Love) and still use every opportunity to try and "de-convert" me back to theirs way. I have always known at some level that something was deeply wrong with Christianity and this book confirms this at many levels. Thank you Bishop Pearson and may God richly bless all your efforts to bring forth The Real Truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lesson from a God loving man
When religious zealots from all walks of religion are trying to convince you that their way of knowing God is the only way, I recommend "God is not Christian, nor a jew, Muslim, Hindu" as a must read because it takes on religious dogma and rituals and puts what is the essential view on spirituality. Enlightenment comes to those who are free from "persecution of sin" and can express themselves freely without any type of retribution from an angry God. Carlton Pearson is a forerunner on the future of what religions will preach. I am very excited about the love this book brings to the world! Right on, Carlton! I don't know you but I love you for writing this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but ...
Like Pearson I grew up in a religious household, Catholic. God fearing but not in an "us" against "them" sort of way, I grew up rather liberal in NYC so I was open minded. Like many I struggled with my faith and found truths and wisdom in Eastern Philosophy and through a more liberal Christian approach. Pearson in my opinion skips between hypocrisy, enlightenment, Christianity, and um, so much more. To me he still seems confused at times jumping between Christian theology and Eastern Philosophy. The message is nothing new, just read Confuscious and Taoist writings as I did at a catholic college. I believe we should read but also contemplate on many of these so called New Thought Priests. To call themselves Christians is ridiculous. I respect their ideals and I admit, years ago I was torn between the personal God I grew up with to the IT God I have accepted. But if one is NOT a Christian, or Hindu, where is the morality? Where is the lack of selfish arrogance? I think Taoists & Buddhists do a better job of sharing enlightenment and wisdom, as does the Bible, to an extent, with more emphasis on a righteous life. I found peace and understanding in many Eastern writings but also a man who did embrace these. Thomas Merton. I am a believer in Christ (not just his Christ Consciousness) and Pearson makes excellent points in showing us snippets of who/what Christ may have been- the enlightened one, and to take it further FOR ME, Emmanuel- God among us.
All said and done a good read I would say for Christians who are interested in learning of consciousness because Pearson relies heavily on his previous Christian faith to teach and justify morality in the world. In my solitude in contemplation I most agree with Merton in the Loving God and love being the driving force in the afterlife, as do many NDE's testify to, and becoming enlightened as a path to know the Alpha Omega. I'll leave it up to you to decide but please don't let a few words and new ideas shatter your whole faith but as Pearson would say, change it, or evolve. I agree, Christianity is stagnant and in many cases misses the points of Jesus which Pearson logically points out.I salute you Mr. Pearson for your courage in leaving your ministry but we all have many more spiritual exercises to embark on in life. I hope to see more from you on these matters as you mature in the balance between faith and enlightenment of self.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Here we go again" , or...DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!
Here we go again.
Another guy who spent his life in church and never "got it"- never encountered the Spirit of Truth.
Instead he has given-in to the secular world that is at enmity with God and shaped a belief-system that mirrors it.

I wish these false teachers ( Biblical "tares" and "antichrists") like Pearson and Spong would take-off their collars and go about their business of NOT believing in Christ and the Bible somewhere else.
But I guess its just too lucrative to do so.
Plus, in their infernally-appointed position AS false-teachers/tares/antichrists, its their job to try and mislead the rest of us.

But let me summarize the book for the curious (which I didn't buy- thank God- but checked-out from the library):

No devil, No Hell, No Atonement, No Incarnation, No Divinity of Christ, No need for Salvation, No personal God only a "Principle", No Second Coming.

But there's a lot of talk about:

"Evolution"- the evolution of man, of Christianity, of society, religion, etc.
"New Thought"- an old, impotent philosophy making the rounds like and old prostitute to new customers
"Christ Consciousness"- I mean, really, did this guy raid some 50's or 60's era bookstore?
And Homosexuality- boy does this guy, like Spong, over do it on this subject. In fact, one of the most revealing parts of the book is a letter he wrote in response to a family humbly leaving his church because of its acceptance of homosexuality, which they could not reconcile with their personal beliefs. He tells them that they are a lot less "spiritually advanced" than he thought and lays it on thick with malice. But we aren't told what happened at the service that caused them to make the decision. Hmmm...

A couple more quotes:
Zaccaeus responded to the "Christ principle in Jesus"
"I no longer view God as a god or the God...not he or she but more of an "it"..."

Anyway, you get the picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all seekers of Truth!
I discovered Bishop Pearce through an on-line search for something that led me to something, which led me to a YouTube video of him preaching to a congregation which was amazing! And later through downloading some of his sermons from the latest church: [...]

I really admire this man and his commitment to God, to go through all the challenges his life-long indoctrination put before him as he was deeply spiritually awakened and called to a much higher place in order to really serve mankind and be a true channel of God.This book and the one before tell of a very important and very human journey that many are making right now as we awaken to a higher calling on this planet and our work to transform it.

His books offer much and should be savored. This is a great book for all seekers of Truth--enjoy! ... Read more

Violent examples of persecution by Muslims against Muslims converting to Christianity.A sobering series of testimonies of ordinary people desperately seeking reality by escaping from painful and meaningless religious dogmas and rituals. Even though only Muslim persecution was portrayed, I have seen similar persecution used against Christians converting from other religions as well.I would not take the theme as attempting to bring extreme Muslims into a negative light as an attempt to contrast religious inflexibility and intolerance with a desperate search for true purpose and personal meaningfulness to life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Experiential, Not Theological
This book isn't for the person who wants to explore the way to evangelize, or even just understand, Muslims. Rather, it is the account of the subjective experiences of Muslims who were led to abandon their Islamic faith for faith in Jesus Christ. As some of the other reviewers note, one of the effects of the stories is to remind Western Christians how easy our faith lives are, and how flabby our faith is. Would we turn to Christ if faced with a little difficulty in life? How much less with imprisonment, abandonment, banishment, torture, or even execution!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
This is a very enlightening book on Muslims who counted the cost and have surrendered their lives to Christ. The format of the book was easy to read and the chapters were short individual stories which made reading even easier for times when you only had a little while to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging and encouraging
This is a great book of stories of former Muslims who now follow Jesus - and some who have not yet chosen to follow. Each chapter is a different story. This is a great challenge to pray and also an encouragement of how God is working.Great also to give as a gift - graduations, etc.

Though not up to date, this book is an important study of the Nation of Islam movement.Let me warn though that it should be supplemented by the excellent book on Elijah Muhammad called, "An Original Man", as well as primary sources to get a clearer picture of this movement.
My one complaint is that the introduction, written by another scholar, paints a completely negative picture of the NOI movement, ignoring the positive contributions and context of its growth and development.Luckily, the author has a healthier approach. There is much to be learned here, but a more recent study of this nature should be written about the further evolution of this important modern Muslim and African American movement. ... Product Description

This book is a unique collection of alternative Muslim voices, predominantly from Europe, who come from a variety backgrounds—academia, theology, acting, activism—and who make a transformational contribution to the debate of the future of Islam and Muslims in the West. They are a selection, representing the silent majority voices many in the West so desperately want to hear.

Contributors are based in a variety of European and American cities, mainly in areas where there are large number of Muslim immigrant populations. Some discuss theological issues, while others talk about their personal struggles of being a Muslim in a non-Muslim setting and hearing conflicting messages about how one is supposed to behave as a “true Muslim.” They come from different ethnicities and different social and academic backgrounds.

Product Description
Rejecting theories of economic deprivation and psychological alienation, Mohammed Hafez offers a provocative analysis of the factors that contribute to protracted violence in the Muslim world today. Hafez combines a sophisticated theoretical approach and detailed case studies to show that the primary source of Islamist insurgencies lies in the repressive political environments within which the vast majority of Muslims find themselves. Highlighting when and how institutional exclusion and indiscriminate repression contribute to large-scale rebellion, he provides a crucial dimension to our understanding of Islamic politics. 5-0 out of 5 stars Convincing theory and case studies
This book makes the case that you can't understand Islamic violence without understanding the repressive environments of Muslims. It rejects several theories like economic impoverishment, ideology, or jihad as explanations of why Muslims turn to violence. When people are excluded from politics and repressed brutally, it makes sense that some will turn to violence. The book's limitation is that the author does not explain why Muslims turn against the West (especially the US) or why some repressive countries don't have violence like some of his case studies: Algeria, Egypt, Kashmir, Philippines, Tajikistan, and Chechnya. Having said that, it is still the best explanation I've read so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Way of Looking at Islamic Violence
I read this book for a college research paper on religious terrorism. It argues that economic and psychological approaches are not enough to explain Islamic rebellions in places like Egypt, Algeria, Kashmir, Chechnya, etc. All these violent places suffer from political exclusion and indiscriminate repression, which are the main factors for violent dissent. The author uses lots of cases which cover many parts of the Islamic world, such as Pakistan, Tunisia, Jordan, Philippines, Tajikistan (in addition to the ones mentioned above). So, I felt I had a very good coverage and the argument was convincing because it applied to several countries. The book is very detailed and well footnoted using English, Arabic and French sources. The best part deals with anti-civilian violence (ch. 5) which most books I read do not address adequately. Overall, if you are thinking or writing about Islamic violence, this book makes an original argument and offers lots of illustrations. ... Read more

Honor in these foreign countrys is always mixed with mans attitudes and abuse towards women. The book shows the truth here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very engaging book
This book was so riveting I really wanted more at the end. This book was published in 1996(?), so I really wish the author would write a current assessment of the state of Islam, and an update on some of the involved people that she wrote about. This author gives us a clear picture of the heart of Islam, and the factions that are bent on twisting the tenets of the religion for their political and personal power gain. The book gave me a new appreciation for being born female in America, and not somewhere in the Middle East.

5-0 out of 5 stars Price of Honour
This is the second book I've read by Jan Goodwin - the first was about her experiences with the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation.Like the first, it is compelling reading, and provides a powerful insight into the impact of fundamentalist Islam on women.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-researched, unbiased, comprehensive.
This book describes the late 90s/early 00s Muslim Middle East. Jan Goodwin interviews a plethora of people, ranging from perfectly ordinary citizens to the Gran Sheikh of Al Azhar. Viewpoints and opinions of the interviewees range from extremely Islamic conservative to border-lining 'rebellious'.

Some people are bound to accuse Goodwin of giving a biased, self-serving account of these societies, but as I mentioned above, her interviews are extensive and comprehensive. She also covers recent, controversial 'news' in the countries (ex: Saudi women driving in protest) and various people's responses to them, making it more difficult to justify calling her biased.

Goodwin skillfully intertwines women's issues and feminism in the Middle East, background and facts about the religion of Islam, history of Islamic fundamentalism, and the politics of current events in the region into one book. The topics flow naturally from one to the next and support and illuminate one another.

There are certainly some melancholy stories about atrocities and injustices that particular women have endured, but to write this book off as just a melodrama or collection of sad stories would be a big mistake. This book gives tremendous insight into various lifestyles and current (and historical) issues in the Middle East, pertaining to women and just in general.

The Price of Honor is phenomenal! A truly excellent book. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Real
Aside from her useful overviews of Islamic culture and the various Islamic demoninations, Jan goes to great lengths to provide real, living insights into what life under Islam means for women, interviewing women from ten countries. What is illustrated is both the stark contrasts in how Islam is externalised in each country, and yet also how its continually replanted conventions regarding women still manage to suppress the earnest will and ambitions of women where no practical need or pragmatic purpose exist for such suppression. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Warning
This book is written by someone who is considered an apostate, a member of the ahmaddiya group on whom all muslim leaders of the world have declared to be non-muslims. Along with much of their literature, there are inaccuracies, mistakes, and outright omissions regarding Islam and muslims. This does not mean that non-muslims cannot write excellent books on Islam that muslims find useful but the intention of this author in many of his works are to introduce the unwary into his cult.
Buyer Beware.

An innovative ethnography that uses the personal stories of four Tunisian women to explore women's experiences in a developing Muslim nation.

Daughters of Tunis is an innovative ethnography that carefully weaves the words and intimate, personal stories of four Tunisian women and their families with a statistical analysis of women's survival strategies in a rapidly urbanizing, industrializing Muslim nation. Delineating three distinct network strategies, Holmes-Eber demonstrates the "public" role of neighborhoods as informal social security systems, and the impact of women's education, class and migration on women's resources and networks. An engaging, warm, and oftentimes humorous portrait of Muslim women's responses to development, Daughters of Tunis is an exciting new approach to ethnography: merging the historically disparate methods of both qualitative and quantitative analysis. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You just can't find this information elsewhere.
I'd purchased this book years ago, and finally got around to reading it a couple months ago. It was such a hard start, but some weeks ago I got past the intro. Ugh, I should not read have bothered with the intro. Unless you're reading this for school, it isn't helpful and it will make it a hard read. You can read the intro last. It's all methodology, research tactics. Important to understand perspective, but not critical to appreciate the book.

So, once you get past the intro, the meat of this book is incredible. You just can't get this information elsewhere. It's priceless. I've not found enough resources on Tunisian culture and women in Tunisia/North Africa (in English) that are truly informative like this. Most books offer just the tourist perspective, this offers you life perspectives, and insights into the real people and families of Tunis. Yes, it's a bit dated, but when you need a starting point for understanding Tunisia and Tunisians, this is incredibly helpful.

Tunisia is such a very different country, and this book finally tells some of the story of its people. I'm impressed and pleased. It's a reference book that, outside of the intro, is actually a pretty easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tired of Muslim Stereotypes?
This study is an engaging often humorous read that does not follow the stereotypical media representation of the Muslim women. In this easy to read yet scholarly study, Holmes-Eber invites us to meet tens of real Muslim women. Not the mistreated and oppressed media cartoon, but women that we can relate to and understand. If you are looking for yet another sensationalized depiction of downtrodden Arab women find another book. If, however, you would like to discover what real Muslim women are like, this is one of the few and far between books that you should read.
I read the book in two nights and found it utterly refreshing!Especially in light of recent events this book will help all of us Americans to see Arabs and Muslims as people first, making us question the Arab enemy image that we are continually bombarded with. I am glad that I ordered 2 of these books and plan to order more. I have read many books on the subject of Islam vs Christianity and this is the best in many ways. It is balanced, well written, well researched and not filled with inflammatory rhetoric, just facts and experiences from the author who grew up as Muslim and converted to Jesus Christ. I am not quite finished with my first reading, but will likely read it again and use it for reference over time. I have given the second book to a 12 year old family member whose father is Muslim and mother is Christian (they are divorced) in hope of giving him a tool of understanding.

1-0 out of 5 stars hoax that started on the internet
It is amazing how many people have assigned 5 stars to this book praising the author for his "islamic" knowledge, and yet have probably not read another book on Islam. This story has been going around the internet for well over 10 years, and that person could never answer any genuine questions about Islam, and I mean factual questions that any muslim would be able to answer, and he could never keep bits and pieces of his story straight. It is amazing it took this long for it to make it into book form. What many forget though, is that if it is true this person converted. If you go and ask an atheist why they left Christianity, do you think you will get glowing repose on the wonders of the religion? Or disappointments, disillusion, and down right hatred for their ex-religion? My bet is the latter, a disgruntled ex-muslim,-christian, or jew is not the person to take advise on a religion from, at least not without a grain of salt and without having read something of an opposing point of view. In that regards the disengenousness of the author has become apparent, as he does not exhort you to read the Quran or any other books on Islam to see for yourself, but provides you with careful excerpts that are taken out of context, something that can be done with any religious book, and make it look horrible from the outside.People really should learn to read more than one book and educate themselves, rather than parroting what one ex-muslim claims is the truth, even if his experiences were truthful, an honest person would encourage to learn for yourself, not say listen to me and no one else.

"Required reading... " -- Elizabeth Fernea, The University of Texas at Austin

"If a reader were to select only one book in order to gain insight into women's status and prospects in Islamic society, this study should be the one chosen for its clarity, honesty, depth of knowledge and thought-provoking qualities." -- Arab Book World

In this expanded and updated edition, with a new introduction on Muslim women and fundamentalism, Mernissi argues that Islamic fundamentalism is in part a defense against recent changes in sex roles and perceptions of sexual identity.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beyond The Veil
This book really went a long went towards me understand the underpinings of the male/female dynamics in Morocco, a moderate Islamic country. Having had virtually no exposure to Islam it was quite informative and an interesting read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Questionable sources and faulty premise
After reading this book, I have to admit that Mernissi has the ability to convey her message clearly and intellectually. However, I'm most impressed by how she uses secondary and tertiary sources to make some of her strongest points to support her thesis (that female sexuality is suppressed in Islam), evenusing suspicous translations of the Qur'an and sayings of Prophet Muhammad (weak, at best). This is a talent shared also by Fox News, and writers like her are not unpopular among feminists and those who distrust Islam or know little about it.
As a Muslim woman raised in the West, my experiences are obviously much different than Mernissi's (I, too, have a problem with the Morocccan establishment's interpretation of Islam, but I don't follow Morocco's version of Islam. I use primary sources). She admits that her grandmother was captured and basically used as a concubine, resulting in the birth of Mernissi's mother. Tragic, and I uphold Mernissi's attitude towards such an injustice. However, her anecdotal experience is also used as her "research." To automate such practices to Islam's true teachings is unscholarly and lacks credibility.
Also, to use a (faulty) argument that Islam's purpose is to oppress women (and in particular, their sexuality) is to ignore the fact that a man's sexuality is also oppressed. That is part and parcel of a religion that upholds chastity of both partners, not to suppress them, but to uphold dignity, self-worth/esteem, and uphold the rights of children (to know their paternity), which she largely ignores. Polygamy, although allowed in certain situations in Islam, is not practiced widely in the Muslim world. Upholding concubines is even more questionable in Islam, yet she uses weak/faulty premises like this throughout the entire book.
The most important element that Mernissi ignores is that any true religion is sent to uphold the rights of all individuals, not just the nobility/upper class (who she forgets to mention are the women who practiced unlimited sexual rights in pre-Islamic Arabia, not the average woman, who was considered little more than property and was bought and sold until Islam forbade it). Every woman under Islam is given the right to choose who they marry, to marry at all, to divorce, to own and inherit property, to vote/freedom of expression, to work and to lead, both inside and outside the home, and yes, to be sexually fulfilled. All within the boundaries which every religion has. Where are the males who resent her implication that an "ideal" society would afford women to choose their partners at will and deny the right to paternity if she becomes pregnant? Where is the justice in that argument?
A true religion has a higher purpose than sexual fulfillment/immediate gratification by any means necessary. Yet she doesn't mention these agreed upon principles that uphold the rights of all humankind, and instead, uses weak evidence to support a faulty thesis.
Again, I'm impressed by her ability to do this, at the very least.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unveiling an Inquisitive Mind
Wow! This book really raises some serious, thought-provoking questions regarding female sexual status, and sexual self-determination in Arab-Muslim societies. If I had read this book in the 70s - when it was first written and published - I would have really thought of it as a classic work, but I wasn't born then.

Yet, the book is incredibly outdated. Mernissi does a good job in questioning the general notions (and misconceptions) widespread in her days about religion and the inferiority of women. However, she is out of touch with the contemporary revolutionary ideas that claimed Islam back from the selfish authority of the benighted "Mullahs," who misinterpted Islam out of ignorance, or to fulfill their own political agendas (as still happening in some Muslim countries, wherein Muslim women are subjugated and denied basic rights, such as education.)

Working at the courts in my conservative Gulf country, I witnessed cases in which women "self-determinedly" divorced their husbands, who could not satisfy them sexually. (Lol, awww! I can't believe I'm saying this!)

Even with some historical and Islamic inaccuracies (for instance, many hadiths - Prophetic traditions - quoted by Mernissi have been outruled as inauthentic by contemporary Islamic scholars, thus invalidating many of her arguments and theories), I found this book to be very interesting, and it sheds light - though indirectly, and perhaps unintentionally - on Moroccan history and culture. The chapter on Mothers-in-Law was especially amusing!

It is unfair to criticize the book without taking into consideration the fact that it was written decades ago, and until the latest edition (1985), it must have been current. Instead of complaining about the book and its outdated content, I think I'll just go ahead and write a well-researched book on the same topic!

5-0 out of 5 stars First book by a Muslim feminine writer
When this book originally appeared, I did write a review and got in published in print media. In her work, I was happy to have been introduced for the first time from a pen of (western, muslim, voracious) female writer as to how this gender looked at Islam. I am glad that Fatima continues to provide interesting insights, and she is striving to keep people informed on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very compelling, just a bit too academic
This book is like going through someone else's medicine cabinet. A fascinating look into the homes and bedrooms of the Middle East from a scholarly feminist perspective. The only problem is, it's a bit too scholarly to be a really quick and concise read. Still, Well worth buying. ... Read more

Product Description
Salonica, located in northern Greece, was long a fascinating crossroads metropolis of different religions and ethnicities, where Egyptian merchants, Spanish Jews, Orthodox Greeks, Sufi dervishes, and Albanian brigands all rubbed shoulders. Tensions sometimes flared, but tolerance largely prevailed until the twentieth century when the Greek army marched in, Muslims were forced out, and the Nazis deported and killed the Jews. As the acclaimed historian Mark Mazower follows the city’s inhabitants through plague, invasion, famine, and the disastrous twentieth century, he resurrects a fascinating and vanished world. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not sure where he got his information from
The writer is living out quite a lot of important information.
Book is biased and incorrect.
Should check historical documents, especially New York Times archives about who exactly lived in Salonica in that time.
It is correct that after the Balkan wars, a large Greek population moved in into this region, but what happened to the people that use to live there before the Balkan Wars?

5-0 out of 5 stars A history of an epic city
I lived in Thessaloniki as an exchange student in 1980. I wish that this book had bee available for me to realize the historic gems around every corner of my favorite city at that time.Mazower's book opens up the reasons for its (the city's)being and why it was and is so important. People of every religion, or none, will be fascinated by its political turmoil and intrigues, and visitors today can walk the same roads and shop in the same marketplaces as those who went before them, thousands of years ago.
I have purchased this book several times and keep giving it away to other Thessalonians and people who love Thessaloniki as much as I.

4-0 out of 5 stars And after reading you visit
The book has a couple of slow passages, but overall Mazower offers a very lively account of Salonica since Ottoman times. You're not just reading about Salonica, but also the organization of the Ottoman empire, the history of the Sefardim Jews, diplomatic customs and modern Balkan history.

3-0 out of 5 stars Salonica, city of ghosts
Just started reading this book. It is still a good promise...

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent history of Salonica and Greece
I enjoyed this book.It is informative not only about Thessaloníki but also the overall region, including the Balkans and Ottoman empire. The author concentrates on the Ottoman period, but the primary focus of the book is how the relationship and conflict between the three religions shaped this dynamic region over time.It was interesting to read how these three groups, that are now antagonistic, lived somewhat peaceably through most of the city's history. In addition, this book gave a fair representation of the agonizing effects from the forced migrations of much of the population and also the Holocaust.

The style of the book is a little different than most histories in that it is not purely chronological. The author discusses a particular group over time, then within the same section, will "rewind" to cover another group that existed around the same period. In retrospect, I think this style makes sense as it allows a thorough analysis of each group; however, it would have been beneficial to have been warned in the introduction or forward that this style would be employed.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to understand more about this city, Greece, and the Ottoman and Byzantine empires, as well as the history of these three religions. ... Read more

This book is an introduction to the history of the Muslim world for readers with little or no knowledge of the subject. It points out the unifying elements that bind together the Muslim world, but stresses the religious and political differences that prevent them from acting as a unit. This book features economic, political, intellectual, and social developments over the wide area of the Muslim world and across many centuries. For readers interested in learning the history of the Muslim world; also, for employees of corporations and businesses that trade with regions ruled by Muslim-dominated governments.

Product Description
The treatment and role of women are among the most discussed and controversial aspects of Islam. The rights of Muslim women have become part of the Western political agenda, often perpetuating a stereotype of universal oppression. Muslim women living in America continue to be marginalized and misunderstood since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.Yet their contributions are changing the face of Islam as it is seen both within Muslim communities in the West and by non-Muslims.In their public and private lives, Muslim women are actively negotiating what it means to be a woman and a Muslim in an American context.

Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad, Jane I. Smith, and Kathleen M. Moore offer a much-needed survey of the situation of Muslim American women, focusing on how Muslim views about and experiences of gender are changing in the Western diaspora. Centering on Muslims in America, the book investigates Muslim attempts to form a new "American" Islam. Such specific issues as dress, marriage, childrearing, conversion, and workplace discrimination are addressed. The authors also look at the ways in which American Muslim women have tried to create new paradigms of Islamic womanhood and are reinterpreting the traditions apart from the males who control the mosque institutions. A final chapter asks whether 9/11 will prove to have been a watershed moment for Muslim women in America.

This groundbreaking work presents the diversity of Muslim American women and demonstrates the complexity of the issues. Impeccably researched and accessible, it broadens our understanding of Islam in the West and encourages further exploration into how Muslim women are shaping the future of American Islam. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars IWS Muslim women in America
Muslim Women in America: The Challenge of Islamic Identity Today is a non-fiction work by Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad, Jane I. Smith, and Kathleen M. Moore that aims to explore the lives of Muslim women living in the United States. The major theme in this book is how Muslim women in America choose to fit themselves into society - how they balance between their religious beliefs and the country they live in. The book's eight chapters begin with "Setting the scene" - and introductory chapter that presents the issues that are intended to be addressed within the text. Within the introduction, the authors make a statement that their work does in fact intend to focus on those who consciously choose to uphold their religious and cultural affiliations and to do so openly.

"Persistent Stereotypes," the second chapter, explains the dichotomized impression that American society has of Muslim women: that of the eroticized, mysteriously veiled and seductive women, uneducated and oppressed women smothered in veils, and the image of the anti-west woman "extremist." The extreme vulnerability that Americans perceive is reiterated through missionaries' focus on helping the "poor heathens" and media's anonymous pictures of veiled women. Additionally, the media chose to focus on the atrocities of the Taliban while ignoring citizen's own efforts and activism to amend the situation. Lastly, the chapter addresses the misconception that all Muslim women choose to wear hijab, although the authors do concede that the head covering has become a symbol of adequate piety that can induce hierarchical interactions.

The main content of the book is also presented in a very eloquent fashion that stays true to the organizational tools, like chapter separation and sectional headlines within each chapter. Having already studied Islam in America, this book presented itself in a clear and concise manner that was well supported and cleanly executed. For individuals who have not yet made a study of Islamic tradition and culture in America or abroad, some of the context may be lost. An all-around well-written and informative read, this book is perfect for one studying Muslims in America who has already made some headway in the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars IWS266
The three women Yvonne Haddad, Jane Smith, and Kathleen Moore's book on the perception of Muslim women, Muslim Women in America: The Challenge of Islamic Identity Today, is a well constructed book. The book discusses what Muslim women face both in Western society and within their own communities. In the being of the book the writers give an overview of the history of Muslim women. The different kinds of Muslim women are presented and their attached stereotypes. How Muslim women have been pointed at and have been judge according either their: dress, the mosque they attend, their accent, their activity in workplace or school, being a housewife. Something as small as being a housewife labels a Muslim women. Some may think that she is a housewife because she is oppressed and that she doesn't have a any freedom.
The writers set out to show a variety of different Muslim women and their voices and actions. The book attempts to get the reader to look at the book objectively and not to generalize. The issues discussed are to help the reader see the differences and that stereotyping Muslim women is actually harder than one may think because of the vast differences among Muslim women.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good but not indepth study of Muslim Women in America
Professor Haddad, Professor Smith, and Professor Moore, professors of History of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations, Islamic Studies, and Law and Society, respectively, wrote Muslim Women In America to explain the plight of Muslim women in America. In their words, "What follows in this book describes not only the problems Muslims encounter but also the opportunities enjoyed by many American Muslim women to define their own identities and determine their own destinies."
The book starts off with the chapter SETTING THE SCENE. It describes the different issues that American Muslim women have to deal with. The first section, Where did they come from? deals with the countries that American Muslim women came from and what time period they came to the United States. The second section, Religious Identities focuses on the different identities that Muslim women in America claim. These identities are mostly Sunni according to the book, with a decent 20% minority of Shiites, with a small amount of Sufis and other fringe sects. The chapter goes on to talk about Islamic Dress, Woman as Participants in American Society, Anti-Muslim Prejudice, Issues of Identity, and finally Feminism as it relates to Islam.
PERSISTENT STEREOTYPES is the next chapter and it deals with many of the stereotypes that continue to plague American Muslim women. Western Colonialism, the first section, differentiates the differences between Islam and the west. "This juxtaposition of Islamic and Western models of womanhood goes back to the early foundation of the American Republic," reads the third paragraph in the section. It talks in depth about the way that Western women and Muslim women view each other. The section goes on to tell about how Americans accepted the European view of Muslims because the only real contact most had was European texts about the subject. A sampling of other sections of this chapter include: contemporary efforts at evangelism, stereotypes in popular culture, and Muslim media. Each section takes on different set of stereotype that Muslim women deal with in modern America.
The chapters move along swiftly to EMBRACING ISLAM, PRACTICES OF FAITH, GENDER AND FAMILY, MUSLIM WOMEN IN THE CRUCIBLE, CLAIMING PUBLIC SPACE and COMPETING DISCOURSES. Theses chapters offer little in the way of surprises but interesting highlights include pages 44-45, under the chapter EMBRACING ISLAM which talk about the conversion of African American women from the Nation of Islam to more orthodox forms of Islam. Pages 105-107, of MUSLIM WOMEN IN THE CRUCIBLE, are quite interesting as well and deal with an incident Miss Kaukab experienced with airport security a few months after 9/11. Kaukab was searched in an unreasonable manner after she went through a metal detector without setting it off. She seemed to be singled out because of her head scarf and Arab looking ethnicity.
Muslim women have been one of the most controversial topics in modern American discussion. Are they oppressed by Islam, do their husbands hold cultural values from their home countries that encourage the abuse of wives? These are many of the questions that this book attempts to answer.
Muslim Women In America doesn't distinguish itself much from books like Paul M. Barret's American Muslims. The focus of the book is somewhat different. Barret's book focuses on Muslims in general and Muslim Women In America takes on Muslim women's issues. Many of the themes are similar in both books, and the central question in Barret's book, "What, for Muslims, is a normal American life?" is one that is only alluded to in Muslim Women In America but only for Muslim women. Both books search for the identities of a minority religion in a country like the United States with complicating factors that consist of cultural clashes and assimilation of immigrants, the specter of some that highjack Islam and force real practitioners to deal with discrimination and harsh treatment as suspected terrorists. Major differences include the search for better treatment and the issues that only effect Muslim women.
The book is recommended to those wishing a better understanding of issues that deal with Muslim women in America. The book lives up to it's promise to "describe not only the problems Muslims encounter but also the opportunities enjoyed by many American Muslim women." My only caveat was that the book didn't explore any of the issues it presented in depth. Everything was a sort of cursory exploration that only touched the surface of the issue. Maybe the authors intended it to be a survey and not an in depth study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Muslim Women in America
In their scholarly work, Muslim Women in America, Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad, Jane I. Smith and Kathleen M. Moore provide a comprehensive examination of the myriad of challenges facing Muslim women in contemporary American society. As the reader is advised to avoid generalizations in favor of the "big picture," three prominent and recurring themes found throughout the book serve as the focus of this review.First, persistent stereotypes regarding the subjugation of Muslim women by Muslim men in the name of religion have led American public opinion to the belief that the oppression of women is an inherent part of Islam.Second, such stereotypes have led to ongoing identity issues among Muslim women. Finally, Muslim women in America are claiming a public space for their voice.Paul Barrett's American Islam speaks to the struggle for the soul of a religion.American Muslim women are engaged in such a struggle, yet an additional component is at work: the liberation of women - both within and beyond the borders of Islam in the American context.Within religion, women are challenging traditional norms to gain a more prominent role.Outside Islam, women are seeking to discredit stereotypes of their subjugation both by example and activism.Ultimately, a feminist component of the struggle for Muslim women adds a new dimension that is being engaged in the American context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review Of Muslim Women Living in America by Amanda Smith
Since the moment Islam has touched the Western world there has been surmounting concern about the treatment of its women and what their roles are in society. Concern from people who are outside of the Muslim world may seem unprecedented but there is also concern from the women in the Muslim world about their place in their society and in the west. With increasing pressure to adhere to western ways while still maintaining their Muslim values, Muslim women living in America are facing a plethora of issues that effect every aspect of their lives.
In their book Muslim Women Living in America , Yvonne Haddad, Jane Smith and Kathleen Moore take on the task of dispelling stereotypes of Muslim American women while also creating a picture of what their place is in western society. Well researched and well written this book covers not only the place of Muslim American women in society, but also at home and at work.
The author's goal in mind when writing this book was to "foster a more accurate understanding of Islam and Muslims in the west."They also want to answer the question that many Muslim American women face of "how to understand themselves as Americans and how to define themselves so as to be understood by their fellow citizens."
Dealing with relevant issues to Muslim American women such as how their Islamic dress may set them apart in western society and the emergence of talking openly about sexuality and dating, the authors write with a sense of compassion about the issues surrounding these women's lives. The book also touches on the differences that Muslim American woman of different ethnicities deal with while living in the western society such as how African American Muslims converts feel that "immigrants tend to be more enthusiastic about new Anglo members of the community than they are about blacks." The book does an efficient job at throwing light on the multi-faceted world of every Muslim American woman and not just the majority of its members

Product Description

With tensions between the West and the Islamic world running high—from xenophobic rhetoric about immigrants in Europe to President Bush’s call for a “crusade” against terrorism—it is more important than ever that we understand the role of religion and political culture in everyday Muslim society.

In Varieties of Muslim Experience, anthropologist Lawrence Rosen explores aspects of Arab Muslim life that are, at first glance, perplexing to Westerners. He ranges over such diverse topics as why Arabs eschew portraiture, why a Muslim scientist might be attracted to fundamentalism, and why the Prophet must be protected from blasphemous cartoons. What connects these seemingly disparate features of Arab social, political, and cultural life? Rosen argues that the common thread is the importance Arabs place on the negotiation of interpersonal relationships—a link that helps to explain actions as seemingly unfathomable as suicide bombing and as elusive as Quranic interpretation.

Written with eloquence and a deep knowledge of the entire spectrum of Muslim experience, Rosen’s book will interest not only anthropologists and Islamicists but anyone invested in better understanding the Arab world.

2-0 out of 5 stars not the best way for evangelizing Muslims
I don't really see the point of this book. If you want to share the Gospel with your Muslim friends, I don't think that this book will help you much if at all.
The book presents the major topics related to Islam, including Allah, Muhammad, the Quran, sin, salvation and afterlife, and tries to prove them wrong with the Bible.
Rhodes is clearly preaching to the choir with this book, and I believe that this way of evangelizing Muslims is absolutely non-effective, as Muslims do not believe in the Bible. The most likely reaction from a Muslim will simply be getting offended, and this will make your effort of leading him/her to Christ ineffective.
The Word of God is incredibly powerful and speaks to the heart, but I think that an all-out Bible-bash won't do any good; on the other hand, telling people about your wonderful, personal relationship with Jesus and showing Christ-like love is the best way to go.
However, like in every other book by Dr. Rhodes, there are some interesting features, like a few thought provoking questions and simple explanations to Muslim beliefs, but overall I am not very impressed .
REMEMBER, THESE KIND OF BOOKS MIGHT BE HELPFUL TO GATHER INFORMATION, BUT WHEN IT COME TO WITNESSING, THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL BE YOUR GUIDE. JESUS WILL GIVE YOU WORDS AND WISDOM IF YOU ASK HIM.

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource
Ron Rhodes does a great job using Scripture to support his points.Great way to understand the differences in Muslim religion and find out how to point out it's errors according to the Bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars I thought this was a great source
I purchased this book as an added resource.Overall, I thought this was a great book, being a former Sunni Muslim there was a lot that I was able to relate to.In addition, many aspects of the religion that I was ignorant to, that were made clear such as History, and the bases of the fundamental beliefs.I enjoyed this book so much; I was able to read it in its entirety in a matter of days. The only aspects I did not really like, was the fact that at times, I felt that the Authors personal opinion, rather than a biblical perspective, was overly exerted. So anyone reading thins book needs to be well versed in the word of GOD, so that they do not get side tracked in feed into the opinions of man.Rather focus on the things of GOD; this is from where clarity comes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad, though room for much improvement
I have read a number of books by Ron Rhodes, and only know too well the double standards and scriptural eisegesis he engages in, alongside the type of logic that would result in an F in any Logic 101 examination. I say this after having read his books on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and macro-evolution.

This book by Rhodes, instead of being deceptive and very weak, scrapes the barrel as being decent, though there is a heck of a lot of room for improvement, something I doubt will occur in his forthcoming "The 10 most important things you can say to a Muslim."

The good points of this book is that Rhodes answers the criticisms forwarded by Muslims against the divine Sonship of Jesus Christ, the accuracy of the passion accounts, and other elements Muslim apologists misinterpret/misrepresent in their literature against Christianity. Furthermore, he does blow holes into a number of claims Muslims make for the authenticity of the Koran, such as Muhammad's alleged illiteracy, and how the Koran misrepresents Orthodox Christianity, such as the Trinity per "Orthodox" Christianity (the differentiation between "person" and "being" is a Nicene construct), with the Koran confusing the Trinity with Modalism, no doubt influenced by the fact that Muhammad's first wife was an Ebionite Christian.

The more weaker arguments forwarded by Rhodes in this text is his incessant use of so-called Messianic prophecies being fulfilled in the New Testament, "proving" its divine inspiration. For instance, Micah 5:2 is *not* about Jesus. "Bethelehem-Ephrate" is not the suburb of Jerusalem but a tribe or a person (see 1 Chronicles 4:4). Moreover, Jesus did not free the people from the Assyrians, so how could he have fulfilled this "prophecy"? What Rhodes ignores is that the New Testament authors engaged in a Midrashic interpretation of Old Testament pericope, often resulting in texts being wrenched out of context to suit the New Testament authors' pre-conceived beliefs.

Much more could be said about this text, but this should be enough to show that there as many problems as there are positive points about this text. One using this text should approach it with some caution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another piece of work from Rhodes
I really enjoyed this book.I have briefly studied this faith and since I had read the Reasoning with Mormons book I figured this one would be just as good.It was.It was extremely informative. One thing I love about Ron Rhodes "Reasoning" books is that they are not negative in any way. They are explanatory. This is what they believe and this is what the bible teaches. It is a non-bashing book.Anyone who wants to learn more about this faith or any other should pick up his Reasoning from the Scriptures books. ... Product Description
Captures and elucidates the complex dynamics of Christian-Muslim relations in Egypt.

Egypt is considered the intellectual birthplace of the modern Islamic movements and is a center of contemporary Islamic thought and culture. It is also home to one of the oldest Christian populations in the world.

In this book, Peter Makari considers the role of governmental and nongovernmental actors in conflict resolution and the promotion of positive Christian-Muslim relations in Egypt. He maintains that, prevailing opinions notwithstanding, the last quarter-century has witnessed a high level of interreligious cooperation and tolerance. Relying heavily on Arabic sources, Makari examines the rhetoric and actions of official governmental and religious institutions, as well as civil society actors. Combining empirical research with an informed theoretical perspective, this work offers a perspective seldom available to the English reader on questions of tolerance, citizenship, and civil society in this part of the Arab world. ... Product Description
The attacks of September 11, 2001 instantly heightened the American public's sensitivity toward matters of religious difference. Many Americans realized not only that non-Muslims need to learn more about Islam, but also that Muslims must better understand and articulate their own faith to themselves and others. In this volume, Jane Idleman Smith examines the current American Christian-Muslim dialogue, contextualized both through the history of Islam and of the contemporary West.As we approach the sixth anniversary of 9/11, Smith dares to ask what progress has been made through this dialogue, what happens when that dialogue fails, and what direction it will take in the years to come.

Smith examines the recent theological writings of both Catholics and Protestants about dialogue and pluralism, and shows that since 9/11 a few Muslim scholars in the West have also begun to write about these issues. Now, she argues, many Christians and Muslims are expressing their desire to move beyond theological discussion into what is often called the "dialogue of engagement."As evidence, she points to initiatives among young people, women, and African Americans as they attempt to find ways to work together in local projects of justice and community service.Throughout the book, one hears the personal voices of these Muslim and Christian participants in the American interfaith dialogue.

While many of the encounters between Islam and Christianity over the past 14 centuries have been peaceful, Americans know little about the history of religious interaction beyond the Crusades or the fear Europe felt in the face of the invasions of the Turks. This volume is intended to educate Americans about the great diversity of Muslims in this country while illustrating how Christians and Muslims are coming together, not only to talk to each other, but to work together for the common good. ... Product Description
This book is the first account of the period to consider both Christian and Muslim Spain. The author discusses the various societies, cultures and governments of Muslim and Christian Iberia in the centuries of their critical confrontation. Beginning with the disintegration of the caliphate at Cordoba in the early eleventh century, the book traces the decline of the Muslim taifa states, and describes and explains their conquest, first by the Murabit, and then the Muwahhid fundamentalist Muslim empires of North Africa.

Bernard Reilly describes the rising Christian kingdoms of Leon-Castilla, Aragon, Barcelona and Portugal and shows how they were engaged in a struggle on several fronts. As they vied with one another for control of the old Islamic stronghold of the center and north, they were also in continuous conflict with the Murabit and Muwahhid rulers, while striving to come to terms with the French, the Papacy and the Italian maritime powers. ...
