Crucible of Conflict and Controversy
Holiness Abroad: Nazarene Missions in Asia is a scholarly analysis of the development of foreign mission policy in the Church of the Nazarene, and its implementation in Asia.

Professor Floyd Cunningham presents an honest account of the difficulties involved in establishing indigenous, yet authentically Nazarene, congregations and districts in India, Japan, China, Korea, and the Philippines. Holiness Abroad presents the crucible of conflict and controversy that shaped Nazarene missions policies and practices.

J. Stephen Malley, co-editor of the Pietist and Wesleyan Studies series, believes that Holiness Abroad "will be of interest to historians interested in the history of missions, American religious history and American-Asian relations, and missiologists." It will also be appealing to those interested in seeing behind the scenes on Nazarene mission fields and knowing more of the personalities and activities of both missionaries and local Nazarenes.

Cunningham writes with an economy of words but generates a maximum of interest.

Refreshingly Honest
When the Church of the Nazarene began, it might as well have had "Made in America" stamped on it.A century later, it is an international denomination in which Americans are a minority. Cunningham's book is a narrative history of Nazarene missions in Asia that carries an honest assessment of the dynamics in cross-cultural missions that have shaped a unique modern denomination.The basic tone is conveyed in the foreward, where Cunningham writes that anything less than a frank understanding of the personality conflicts between missionaries and the cross-cultural conflicts between missionaries and national workers would be dishonest. The result is a book that shows how national pastors and leaders worked with Western missionaries to fashion an international denomination that has significant presence in the Asia-Pacific region.The book has specific chapters on Japan, China, India, Korea, and The Philippines.Cunningham is an excellent writer whose style maintains reader interest. ... The Nazarenes
Poorly written book.The subject (Nazerene) matter was vague and poorly studied.Authur made poor attempt to get the message across by not staying with the theme of the book.While the other area of the book could of have tided it in nicely.Mr. Gibson failed to grab or keep me interested on the topic.I have read and I am a believer of the Nazarene movement.Mr Gibson I am sorry to say did a poor job on the subject.The book also had several misspelled words.I would not recommend this book.While I would say capture by the cover and title. The book does not do any justice to the subject.
