Ashkenaz is the medieval Hebrew name for this region and thus for Germany. Thus, Ashkenazim or Ashkenazi Jews are literally "German Jews." It is usually set in a mould and served cold. Although traditionally white, blancmanges are frequently given a pink color as well.
