Product Description

A published version of Lisagor's popular www.romancingthebuddha.com web site, this is an adventure-comedy story about Lisagor's hunt for lost treasure in the jungles of urban America and the depths of his life. Like the poor man in the Buddhist parable who wandered for years before discovering a priceless jewel a wealthy friend had sewn into the hem of his robe, Lisagor was unaware of his own Buddha or enlightened nature. Lisagor shares his experiences applying the principles of Nichiren Buddhism to successfully deal with the difficulties of daily life, including depression, spousal illness, the challenges of raising two daughters, and the quest for happiness. An overview of Nichiren Buddhism and a glossary of Buddhist terms are provided. This is an inspirational read for Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love that Buddha
This is an excellent introduction into the Buddhist philosophy of the Japanese priest, Nichiren, and how it applies to your everyday life.

I first found the website that the book was based upon through the recommendation of a friend.Having been a practicing member of SGI-USA for 15 years and owning a dog-eared copy of "Buddha in Daily Life: Introduction to the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin" I was already very familiar with the topics of the book, however I found that Michael Lisagor did a great job in communicating Nichiren's philosophy and it help provide me many new insights into my own religion.

This is a great first book for learning about Budhdism. It's also a great book for those already familiar with the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars You Can Have Fun While Being a Buddhist
The image many people have is of monks with shaved heads wearing long robes. Or maybe Richard Gere looking very serious. Those are other forms of Buddhism. The Buddhism that Mike Lisagor practices is Nichiren Buddhism, as popularized by Daisaku Ikeda and the Buddhist lay organization, Soka Gakkai International (SGI). The SGI is the leading and largest Buddhist denomination, with members in over 190 countries. As Lisagor reveals through a collection of humorous anecdotes from his own life, this is a religious practice for day-to-day application and not something for hermits, professional monks or scholars. Read this book for lightening up your perspective on whatever problems you may have and laugh along with Mike as he overcomes one situation after another and offers keen insights on family relationships.

4-0 out of 5 stars A practical family as well as life problems guide
'Romancing the Buddha' is linked to daily practical family as well life problems, based on the writer's own amazing experience. It is easy to understand and an introduction to Nichiren Buddhism. Along with my experience, I absolutely agree that by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo we can definitely change anything. There is one of the quotes that I picked up from reading this book, which I really like.

"Unless we live fully right now, not sometime in the future, true fulfillment in life will forever elude us. Rather than putting things off till the future, we should find meaning in life, thinking and doing what is most important right now, right where we are - setting our heart aflame and igniting our lives. Otherwise, we cannot lead an inspired existence."

Product Description
On a spring day in the year 1253, a Buddhist priest, Nichiren Daishonin, began to chant and teach 'Nam-myogo-renge-kyo.' In these words was the universal truth through which he had attained enlightenment. He taught that, by chanting this phrase, all people...regardless of ability or understanding...could actually activate their potential for enlightenment and happiness.

Rooted in the beliefs of this 13th century Japanese priest, Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism teaches that spiritual and material blessings can become available in this life. Richard Causton explains the teachings and their history and provides examples of how followers have found their full potential within this daily practice. He shows how personal goals can be combined with a commitment to world peace, ecology, and the easing of suffering through the daily recitation of the Lotus Sutra...a central teaching of Buddhism...and chanting.

The practice of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism involves the determination to transform one's own character and to see the transformation through to the very end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New version is better
The new version of this book, called "The Buddha in Daily Life" is much better than the older version.

5-0 out of 5 stars I cherish this book
I have read this book, now titled "The Buddha in Daily Life - an Introduction to Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism," several times since I discovered it at Amazon of the United Kingdom. You can go there throughit's name at the bottom of the screen on the American Amazon site.Ihighly recommend this book if you are interested in Buddhism and interestedin Nam myoho renge kyo, or even if you have been chanting for many years. This book explains it all in the most amazingly profound yeteasy-to-understand way.

I was not a practicing Buddhist when I first readthis book.I was introduced to Nichiren Buddhism and the Soka Gakkai by afriend in Spain and he told me that I should read "The Buddha in DailyLife" to learn everything I wanted to know about this Buddhism.Hewas right.

Needless to say, I did, and have been practicing NichirenDaishonin's Buddhism with the Soka Gakkai of Mexico ever since.I can'tsay enough good things about this book.It changed my life.It helped mediscover true happiness.Muchisimas gracias Richard Causton!

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Buddha in Daily Life - An Introduction to Buddhism"
Mr. Richard Causton, or "Dickie" to those of us who knew and loved him, was the honorable General Director of Soka Gakkai International-United Kingdom (SGI-UK) until his death in 1995 at the age of 75.A couple of years before his passing, Mr. Causton initiated therevision of this book with the assistance of his good friend andprofessional writer Eddy Canfor-Dumas.In what would become one of thefinal major accomplishments of his life's mission, in 1994 Mr. Caustonfinalized the revised text and renamed this book "The Buddha in DailyLife - An Introduction to the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin."

Tome, "The Buddha in Daily Life" is the greatest book ever writtenin the English language about the practice and study of NichirenDaishonin's Buddhism.I have bought at least ten copies over the past 5years and given them to everyone I know and love - whether they areinterested in practicing Buddhism themselves or simply curious about myBuddhist faith and its philosophy...

Part one of"The Buddha in Daily Life" explains the Buddhist view of life -the theory of the Ten Worlds, the meaning of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, and a fewinspiring experiences from people who have used this practice to changetheir lives for the better.

Part two covers Buddhism in daily life - thethree pillars of Faith, Practice and Study, the Gohonzon and the SokaGakkai International.

I highly recommend Richard Causton's "TheBuddha in Daily Life" to everyone interested in learning more aboutthe practice of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, as well as to everyone alreadypracticing. My own practice and understanding of Buddhism has been greatlyenriched by it - and for that, I am eternally grateful to the great Mr.Richard Causton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many insights
I loved this book.It helped me understand many practical applications of Buddhist ideas instead of the esoteric (and powerless) lessons contained in most books about Buddhism.

Before writing this review I read the previousones and I was suprised by the reviewer from Canada's reaction.Perhapsthey have an ax to grind?

Buy this book, read it, and make your ownjudgement.I found it very educational.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book changed in later versions
The big problem with this book today is that it was significantly re-edited after Causton's death from the original version and after the lay organization, Soka Gakkai, was excommunicated from it's religion, Nichiren Shoshu. Causton, though a loyal SGI leader at the time, still wrote a good(yet controversial within the SGI at the time) book. Anyone interested inreading this book should try and seek out the early edition, not the later. ... Read more

Product Description
The real depth and meaning of the American Dream, and how Buddhism is at the heart and core of the future unfolding of this Dream.

From one of 60 pieces in the book:

Revolution.

There is a revolution coming.

Make no mistake about it, it is in the air.

The old forms are dissolving, soon we will not recognize the old world that we have carried around with us all these eons.

This revolution has nothing to do with all the commotion and thrashing going on around us, clamoring voices, head-on clashes of ideology, stock market ups and downs, wars, deceits, elections, economics, fashions, building booms, technology break throughs, or any of the other zillion zany up and down motions of daily life.

This is something new.You have never heard of it.

This new revolution has been waiting in the shadows since the dawn of the first sun breaking the stillness of the first night.

It is a gigantic shift of orbit. It is the crumbling of spheres. The planets and the suns and the stars will not move in the same worn-out paths anymore.

It will reveal itself in the depths of the heart of every single human being on the face of the Earth. It is coming, make no mistake about it.

And as it reveals itself in the mind of each man and woman, the mountains will fall and shift, chasms will open, the deserts will run with rivers, beautiful blooms will burst from dry dust, suns will sprout in the sky, animals and birds dance, the nuclear force of ten million stars will break forth with light, and the minds of men and women will reflect in every aspect of their lives the halls and mirrors of Eternity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An intriguing delve into spirituality and philosophy, recommended
It's all about putting one's thought to it. "The Buddha and the Dream of America" is a collection of musings from James Hilgendorf as he presents a series of simple thoughts as he draws on Buddhist philosophy and offers insights on the many topics of life. From the afterlife to faith to self-esteem, "The Buddha and the Dream of America" is an intriguing delve into spirituality and philosophy, recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Take On The American Dream
For most Americans, Buddhism conjures exotic images of faraway lands, mysterious statues and monks in colorful robes. But with his excellent new book, James Hilgendorf proves Buddhism also reflects the American experience.

Tracing the emergence of Buddhism in America to the 1844 publication of a Henry David Thoreau essay, The Buddha And The Dream of America is a great read for all Americans, Buddhist or not. Although clearly rooted in Buddhist philosophy, Hilgendorf's small-press paperback is at least as much a cultural commentary as it is a religious tract. Written from an often deeply personal perspective, Hilgendorf's prose frequently reads more like poetry.

Take, for instance, the chapter, "The Problem With Death," which begins with the declaration: "At the heart of the American Dream is the problem of death." Hilgendorf profiles a typical young American woman: "nice-looking, quick to smile." And, yet, as Hilgendorf writes, her life has been dominated by a fear of death.

Here in America, we are the people who have most avoided confronting the problem of death. We have covered up death with television and football games and running after money and cars and love and and an inconceivable list of things to distract us from this most basic issue.

Do you see your life in this passage?

At some point, nearly every American will find him or herself within Hilgendorf's 145 pages. He has a knack in finding universal truths within everyday details.

He also offers hope:

When we awaken, here in America, then we will truly know who we are. Our heart is the universe, and it beats in everyone.

The good news is that one need not be a Buddhist, or even know more about Buddhism than what's in Hilgendorf's book, to benefit from his inspiration. More than that, though, one need not even be looking for any spiritual inspiration to gain from reading The Buddha And The Dream of America. You can just be someone who wants to better appreciate your life as an American.

Product Description

"The natural sympathy and understanding of people everywhere must be the soil in which the new humanism can thrive." For Daisaku Ikeda, whose words these are, education has long been one of the fundamental priorities of his work and teaching. And his emphasis on the intellectual legacy bequeathed to humanity by the great teachers of civilization is in this volume encapsulated by the notion of a "new humanism": a significant residue of wisdom that in the right circumstances may be passed on to future generations, expanding horizons, making connnctions between different cultures and encouraging fresh insights and new discoveries across the globe. These circumstances are perhaps most fully realized in the context of universities. And in promoting his core values of education and peace, the author has delivered speeches and lectures at more than twenty-five academies, colleges and research institutes worldwide. This stimulating collection, which includes the author's most recent lectures, ranges widely across topics as diverse as art, religion, culture and time, and draws creatively on the sages of ancient India, China and Japan as well as on visionary thinkers from every nation, including Tolstoy, Victor Hugo and Gandhi.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Wisdom and Power
Unlocking the Mysteries of Birth & Death...and everything in between, demonstrates the "Universal Enlightenment" espoused by Nichiren Daishonin in 1253.Knowing the path of "Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo" is further enhanced by reading the practical application of Nichiren's Buddhist practice in this book.Nichiren Buddhism is all about victory in this lifetime. With President Ikeda's help, this book serves to show how to change karma into purposeful mission and obstacles into life enhancing experiences.Perhaps the most valuable thing I learned from this book is a whole new appreciation of time and the eternity-of-life contained within each life moment. The author on page 105 points to our lack of power and wisdom as the source of our real cause of unhappiness. Then he goes on to explain in graphic detail how understanding the principle of "three-thousand-realms-in-a-single-moment-of-life gives rise to understanding life itself.I highly recommend this clearly written book to anyone wanting to take the next step to understanding oneself and life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for book clubs!
"We all desire happiness, and yet happiness always seems to be just out of reach."So begins Daisaku Ikeda's exploration of the personal and social barriers to personal happiness and fulfillment.Mr. Ikeda discusses ideas as complex as dependent origination, what is a proper definition of health, the ethical dilemmas of euthanasia, and what exactly is death, from the perspective of a Nichiren Buddhist. Without any impression of judgment or direct expression of opinion, Mr. Ikeda provides ideas for the reader to ponder and encourages them to explore their own opinions on the topics of birth, sickness, old age, and death. While describing a holistic approach to life, in which all aspects of each individuals existence affect all other aspects, Mr. Ikeda also acknowledges the benefits which can be gained by seeking modern and traditional healing methods.Indeed, in many instances Mr. Ikeda encourages the reader to both embrace current opportunities and recognize the wisdom of tradition. Is it perhaps our mad rush to look forward without full consideration of the wisdom of our parents and forefathers that has led to happiness seeming "just out of reach"? Decide for yourself as you read and discuss the ideas presented in this captivating book.An excellent choice for a book club, the ideas presented in "Unlocking the Mysteries of Birth and Death: and everything in between" will produce numerous discussion points for people of all faiths and backgrounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Buddha's Perspective
I had read the 1988 edition many years ago after beginning my own Nichiren Buddhist practice in 1990.It opened my eyes at that time to an understanding of the ten worlds as 10 life conditions.I realized that I experienced Heaven and Hell from moment to moment in my daily life as opposed to places I might go after I died. But as I reread this excellent book as part of a Nichiren Buddhist study group, I learned so much more and achieved a much deeper understanding.
Dr. Daisaku Ikeda is able to express complex Buddhist concepts in a way that the average non-Buddhist can easily understand.
This is a book that you can read sections of depending upon the circumstances you find yourself in.Once you really understand that you and your environment are one, you realize that you can affect your circumstances by how you think about them and can then take value-creating action towards resolving them.
We all have unlimited potential and can turn poison into medicine. During the nine months that we studied this book, my husband went through a serious operation. He had never been that ill before.I had to study harder to find the guidance I needed to turn our circumstances around for a favorable outcome. It is my firm belief that if I had not had the support of my fellow Buddhists chanting for him and for my happiness as I deepened my faith, he may not have survived. The chapter on Illness and the medicine of Buddhism was especially helpful.
Towards the end of the book study, my mother passed away after a brief illness. She overcame the illness, but had seemingly made a decision that this year was going to be her time to die.Her greatest fear was that she would outlive her children and couldn't cope with that. She passed away peacefully sitting in the chair of her walker on the way back from the mailbox on a beautiful summer day in Maine on a mountaintop witnessed only by her flowers, butterflies, and the hummingbirds she fed.She never even fell out of the chair.A neighbor called 911, which was heard by her son-in-law, a police detective who notified my youngest sister Lori. She was well protected by what we call Shoten Jenjin - the protective forces in the universe that we appreciate in our Buddhist practice. The Buddhist view of the eternity of life and its cyclical nature as expressed in this book, helped me to cope with my loss.Even more importantly, my practice with the aid of the study of this monumental work by Dr. Ikeda allowed me to be the pillar that my 4 non-Buddhist siblings could rely upon during this sad time.

5-0 out of 5 stars AwesoMe book on Buddhism

5-0 out of 5 stars Buddha In You Mirror review by A. Holland
I have been practicing Nichiren Buddhism for over 10 years and have always wanted to own this book. It is full of great wisdom related to this practice. Since one of the tenets of this philosophy refers to our "mirror image", this book's title is very appropriate. It is a book that you can refer to every day and the writing never seems to get "old". I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in this type of Buddhism. It is very easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical Common Sense Approach

5-0 out of 5 stars Beware of the Organization SGI and SGI-USA
This book was written by members of SGI-USA. The book is perfect to GLEAM information from and steer you towards the teachings of Buddhism.BUT, beware of the organization SGI and SGI-USA, the parent organization of Nichiren Buddhism and it's American counterpart, as it's known today. They ask for money from their members ostensibly to build community centers to chant together but in actuality have Billions of dollars in their bank accounts and then tell the members they have no money and that they should 'chant' for better things to come their way. They teach that giving money is a good way to reach enlightenment (!).The few who make the decisions are accountable to no one (!).
A scandal erupted in L.A., a few years back, where the members built their OWN community center with their own funds and then were ousted by the Corporation of SGI-USA, the property was sold and a smaller place was rented for them. They were then told to chant for better things to come their way.
Once you do your Google research on SGI and SGI-USA you will find it is very much like a Cult and will alarm and disappoint the true followers of Shakyamuni Buddha and maybe even Nichiren himself. ... Read more

Product Description
Soka Gakkai--a movement of Japanese Buddhism--is one of the world's most rapidly expanding religious movements, especially in the West. The movement sponsors a variety of cultural and educational causes, and is active in promoting world peace and preservation of the environment; as such it has established a high profile in world affairs. Soka Gakkai is also a significant social phenomenon in its own right. This study documents this in its thorough survey of the United Kingdom membership that traces the sources of the movement's appeal to its socially diverse constituency. The combination of a questionnaire survey and personal interviews bring illuminating detail to this sociological analysis. The authors suggest that Soka Gakkai is consistent with modern thought that places a growing emphasis on the essentially private nature of belief and on personal autonomy, and less emphasis on traditional religious institutions. It is for these reasons that Soka Gakkai is a faith in tune with the times and has widening appeal to young people. ... Read more

This book gives the reader a surface view of SGI in the UK but the leaves out any in-depth analysis. For this reason I found this book quite disappointing. It seems the authors did not want to take sides and justproduced something that is quite flat and bland. Some comparisons of SGI UKand other movements such as Scientology were useful but too short. Moreover, for people not familiar with the terminology of the SGI UKmovement this book may be hard to follow. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The manual for every young person...
The way of youth, is a direct, logical, manual for any young person (or young at heart) struggling with the challenges of growing up...simply put,it is a great source of inspiration.
The wise compassionate words of Daisaku Ikeda are both reassuring and helpful in allowing one to realize the hidden value in everyday life experiences whether good or bad. I highy recommend this book for any young adult seeking happiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I bought this for my kids but I keep reading it myself. They can read it when I'm done. It is well written and very practical for everybody in today's world. This includes adults as well as kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for young people
This is a great collection of advice for teenagers, both Buddhist and non-Buddhist.It is relevant in today's world and comes from a place of real humanistic compassion for youth.I'd recommend it to anyone of any age, but especially if you know any teenagers going through tough times or trying to deal with the various issues that come up nowadays.I read a similar book with a Q&A style format by Daisaku Ikeda when I was a teenager and found it very encouraging.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty useful
This is the kind of thing adults should read, let alone kids.I'm reading it because I can't stand most organized religions, especially the one I was raised with - Christianity.Too stringent and angry for me and not realistic in everyday life, IMO.This Buddhist philosophy book aimed at kids really tells it like it is.I could relate to much of the advice given to kids and their parents.I also feel that it reflects the wisdom I've gained through the school of hard knocks. For example, the chapter on friends is relevant. You can't change other people's bad behavior or even influence it, all you can do is be the best possible you, have personal integrity and compassion for those who treat you badly.Basically, if someone behaves badly, you don't have to wish them to go to hell, they're already there.Great stuff in this book. All adults in America should read this!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Way of Youth for Everyone
This volume deals in a Q & A format with issues of concern to all young people.Although Daisaku Ikeda is a Buddhist leader, his answers deal with humanity and the wisdom inherent in it rather than with religion -- it is for everyone. As one reads through the book, a common message emerges vividly although never dealt with directly: you are most valuable and precious; find your own voice and use it without fear; find your own self and value it deeply.By the end of the book, the reader finds himself/herself viewing things in a very positive light. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I thought this book was great.
I thought this book was great. All of the books I've read by Dr. Ikeda have been very inspirational, thought-provoking and educational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting
I found this book very interesting, thought-provoking and inspiring.

1-0 out of 5 stars a manifesto for political impotence
In "A Lasting Peace" author Daisaku Ikeda, president of Soka Gakkai International, proffers that spiritual enlightenment rather than direct political action is the key to world of peace.

Rather thanproviding eloquent insights into constructing a credible and perdurablepeace, Mr. Ikeda has written a manifesto for political impotence andalienation and a recipe for the blind-faith adherance to the dictates ofincorporeal hierarchs.

"A Lasting Peace" and its phlegmaticattempts at elucidating a vision of a harmonious future without war is adisappointing failure when compared to other luminary works such asEmmanuel Kant's "Perpetual Peace" or Thomas Pangle's"Justice Among Nations : On the Moral Basis of Power and Peace."

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Insight, Profound Wisdom
In this book, A Lasting Peace, Daisaku Ikeda once again provides the reader with his outstanding insights and trademark wisdom, addressing the most important issue facing humanity today - how to create a lasting peace.

In the pursuit of peace, Daisaku Ikeda has lectured extensively atthe highest institutions of learning and research throughout the world. Regardless of one's faith, nationality or political views, Daisaku Ikedaexpounds what we can all agree is truth - rational, eternal, universaltruth.

This book, as with most of Daisaku Ikeda's books, reminds usthat if we are ever to rid ourselves of superficial conflicts that escalateto full-blown wars, we must start by regarding the fundamental cause of ourconflicts. This is nothing more than our diluted sense of identity -clinging to superficial differences in human culture, language, skin color, and so on.

Once we recognize our true identity as one human family, thenwe can begin to walk on the path of a true and lasting peace.

I recommendthis book to anyone concerned with the issue of peace in both the world atlarge as well as their own communities.I recommend this book to anyoneintersted in learning about the practical applications of ancient yettimeless Buddhist thought in modern, everyday life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Controversial Approach to Peace
Daisaku Ikeda's collection of essays presents a carefully considered vision of an attainable future where war is the exception rather than the rule. This future, brought about first and foremost by the collective elevation of individual human lives rather than by political action, placescompassion before ideology, and denies the concept of a "just"war.

Human destiny, Ikeda insists, rests in the hands of each individualrather than in the institutions that have historically oppressed and misledhumanity. Because of this stance and its proven successes, his writingattracts attacks from fringe elements of all political stripes.

Read thiscontroversial and historic book and make up your own mind. ... Read more

Product Description

Who is Daisaku Ikeda? At one level, he is the leader of a religious movement--Soka Gakkai--which began in Japan, where it still has its headquarters, but which now claims 12 million adherents around the world. At another level, he is a globetrotting figure whose formal conversations with diverse writers, thinkers and diplomats--including Arnold Toynbee, Joseph Rotblat and Mikhail Gorbachev--have garnered him an international profile, as well as academic recognition. Perhaps above all else, Daisaku Ikeda is viewed as a campaigner for peace. And it is Ikeda's specific contribution to peacebuilding, notably through the central emphasis he has placed on the significance of dialogue, that this book explores: the first to do so in a concerted way. Olivier Urbain shows that while Soka Gakkai (the "value society") may stem from the medieval principles of Nichiren Buddhism, under Ikeda's leadership it has taken these classic wisdoms and transformed them. Now essentially classless and secularised, as well as adaptable and sensitive to modern challenges like resource shortages and climate change, this, argues the author, is a pragmatic approach to peace which has proved both popular and eminently transportable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humanism Altruism and Righteous Compassion is the Way to Go
SGI President Ikeda's clean-cut and relatively important perspective on Peace is greatly emphasized in this book. His humanistic ideals which he incorporates from Nichiren Buddhism greatly reflect both his hope AND action toward a peaceful world. I particularly admired his propositions to make and enhance a more positive environment among our racially, socially and spiritually diversed society---given all for the sake of eveyrone's happiness and the achievement of peace. President Ikeda truly understands the formula needed to lead everyone to their own content and happiness and how can human beings create a more beneficial environment for themselves. His ideas on humanism, altruism and peace are realistic and something that is truly relevant in our disturbed society. A very good scholarly work worth every penny. You'll not regret reading this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars What we need today
Daisaku Ikeda outlines steps towards a peaceful planet.

Quoting philosophers, historians, heroes, he sets out a guide to making peace possible."If you want peace, prepare for peace."

In this time of war, war and more war, to know there are people actively working towards a peaceful planet and future is very encouraging.Ikeda explains how we each have to start with ourselves, our family, our community.Through dialogue, and a commitment to truly desire peace.

For those who believe we do not have to go to war to make a peaceful world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A refreshing change from the usual esoteric Buddhist fare
This excellent and well informed book will be of great interest to anyone interested in the historic and philosophic dynamics of our changing world.Ikeda is a wonderful writer whose understanding of Buddhism, Christianity and other world religions helps us to see current world conditions more clearly. His ability to incorporate the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and Nichiren into a discussion of world history and contemporary discourse will be welcomed by those who have felt confused by the esoteric approach of other Buddhist writings. As an avid reader and writer, Ikeda has cultivated great skill in presenting complex intellectual ideas in a way that makes them relevant to the everyday lives of individuals.Addressing such approaches to historyand culture as relativism, universalism, orientalism, concepts of time and war cultures he makes a convincing presentation of peace and global harmony as attainable goals. The structure of this book is clear and easy to reference, making it an excellent text for teachers and activists. For a reader who has found so much of contemporary Buddhist writings alienating and unrealistic this book is a refreshing and exciting addition to social dialogue on how to create a better world.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enthusiastically recommended reading for peace activists
For The Sake Of Peace: Seven Paths To Global Harmony, A Buddhist Perspective is the result of more than 25 years of UN Peace prize recipient, spiritual leader, educator, and philosopher Daisaku Ikeda's proposals to the United Nations and lectures at universities around the world. With his vision for achieving peace in the new century based upon the life- affirming teachings of Nichiren (13th century Japanese Buddhist teacher and reformer) as well as great world thinkers and philosophers ranging from Confucius, Plato, and Aristotle, to Tolstoy, Gandhi, and Toynbee, Ikeda reveals the issue of peace from the Buddhist perspective of compassion, the interconnectedness of all life, and an absolute respect for human life. For The Sake Of Peace offers "seven paths" ranging from self-mastery and dialogue to global awareness and disarmament that if taken will show humanity the way to live happily together on our finite planet. For The Sake Of Peace is enthusiastically recommended reading for peace activists, students of Buddhist philosophy, and those who have followed and appreciated Daisaku Ikeda's work and thought for the past three decades. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Life Altering
The Buddha Next Door is a must for those who practice Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism as well as for those who don't for the simple reason that it reminds us all of the immense power we have within our lives to transform our circumstances and become happy. I am awaiting Volume 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love chanting!!!
This is my fourth copy of this particular book. I keep giving it away!!
I find chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo an accessible way for a vast spectrum of folks to unblock happiness. The uneducated, the "Intelligensia," the rich, the poor, the victimized, the bullies, the focused, the not so focused: there's something in chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo that fills a missing part of everybody. And it's not necessary to "SAY NO" tonegative aspects of your life. By saying Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, you cultivate such positivity from within, you outgrow your need for negativity, or self destructive behaviour. Chanting is based on sound and a person can't help but change if they chant. People who swim all the time look like swimmers. People who chant become Buddhas. Definitely, Buddha is and Buddha does...The Buddha Next Door, the sequel to The Buddha in Your Mirror, contains inspiring stories of victories: victories of regular people winning over themselves. These stories are sure to win over closed cynical hearts of even the most committed misanthropes(I especially like the experiences of Craig Kirsch, Julie Larsen and Nancy Donahue).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have been buying this book for friends. Please read it and pass it along to loved ones. It makes Buddhism accessible for the beginner, and is a terrific source of encouragement for the longtime practitioner as well. ... Read more

I recommend this book to anyone concerned with issues of peace, both international and domestic, down to the level of their own communities.I also recommend this book to anyone intersted in learning about thepractical applications of ancient yet timeless Buddhist thought in modern, everyday life.

In this book, "A Lasting Peace," Mr. Ikeda yetagain provides us with outstanding insights and his trademark wisdom, addressing many of the most important issues facing humanity today.

Thisbook, like most of Mr. Ikeda's books, reminds us that if we are ever tobanish from this world the superficial conflicts that escalate to all-outwars, we must first regard the fundamental cause of such conflicts. Thisfundamental cause is nothing more than people's diluted sense of identity -people clinging to superficial differences in culture, race, and soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Build an Authentic and Enduring Peace

Our collective human destiny, Mr. Ikedainsists, is in the hands of each individual rather than in the governmentsand other institutions that have historically oppressed humanity.

In"A Lasting Peace," Daisaku Ikeda once again demonstrates hisprofound insights and trademark eloquence, addressing the most pressingissue facing humanity now - how to build an authentic and enduring peace. Daisaku Ikeda, current president of the Soka Gakkai International, aBuddhist organization with 15 million members in 130 nations, has lecturedextensively at the highest institutions of learning and research throughoutthe world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tina Turner Introduced Me To Daisaku Ikeda's Writings
Tina Turner is the reason I found this book, and all others by Daisaku Ikeda, president of the Soka Gakkai International. After hearing Tina Turner speak about her Buddhist practice in interviews, and hearing hergive credit to Buddhism for her happiness and in life, I decided to lookfurther into it myself.

Tina mentioned Daisaku Ikeda as the person whobrought Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, the practice of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo,to America. This is the Buddhist practice to which Tina attributes herspiritual fulfillment and strength. Thanks to Tina's explanations, I wasable to locate the Soka Gakkai International and from there I discoveredmany profound, inspirational and educational writings by Daisaku Ikeda. This book is just one of Mr. Ikeda's many contributions to further theunderstanding of Buddhist principles and their application in every daylife.

I highly recommend that anyone interested in the Buddhist practiceof Nam-myoho-renge-kyo read the writings of Daisaku Ikeda to learn moreabout Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. ... Read more
