4-0 out of 5 stars Physics Prof Investigates Afterlife Claims
William Barrett first caused something of a rumpus in the scientific establishment in 1876, when despite opposition from some of the orthodox scientists present, he presented a paper on telepathy to the Biological Section of the British Association. Alfred Russel Wallace was president of the Biological Section of the time and it is doubtful whether Barrett would have got to present his paper without Wallace's influence. As Wallace recounts in his highly interesting My Life: A Record of Events and Opinions, Volume 2, a few years later Barrett founded the original Society for Psychical Research.

On the Threshold of the Unseen was published in 1918. By that time the SPR had fallen into disrepute, following botched investigations of the mediums Eusapia Palladino, Henry Slade, William Eglinton and due to its refusal to investigate the phenomena of apports, spirit photography, materializations and teleportation of people by spirits. (For more on the decline of the SPR see Natural and Supernatural: A History of the Paranormal from Earliest Times to 1914).

This book sees Barrett attempt to defend the SPR. He refers to the "long list of distinguished men who are members of the society". Disappointingly, rather than criticise Frederic Myers, Richard Hodgson and Henry Sidgwick for their botched investigation of Eusapia Palladino he indulges in juvenile name calling, referring to her as being of "low moral type" and he states that he is not concerned to defend her, but was more disposed to loathe her. Writing in 1905, Alfred Russel Wallace in vol 2 of My Life states that following the death of Myers the publications of the SPR "have become retrograde rather than progressive", so perhaps the object of Barrett's loathing should have been the SPR itself, rather than Eusapia Palladino.

Despite Barrett's faults in refusing to discuss the topics regarded as off-limits by the SPR's ruling clique, this book does contain a solid amount of evidence which seems to indicate that life continues after death. He appears a shrewd investigator and declares that it is "necessary to submit all evidence of the supernormal to the most rigorous scrutiny before deciding on its probable origin". He takes into account the fact that messages apparently from a discarnate source "often spring from and are invariably influenced by the medium's own subconscious life". The case of the pearl tie-pin on pages 184-5 is probably a good place to start for anyone wishing to establish whether consciousness continues after death. ... Read more

Product Description

Why did so many Americans visit and write about, séances? What are the connections between the 'emergence' of spiritualism in 1848 and earlier kinds of supernatural phenomena? This book asks about the cultural and political meanings of spiritualism in the 19th century United States.  In order to re-assess both transatlantic spiritualism and the culture in which it emerged, Bennett locates spiritualism within a highly technologized transatlantic capitalist culture. She argues that, through performances in which the dead speak through and to the living, white Americans' most profound anxieties about political and cultural dispossession, especially of Indians, are articulated.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Rate Research into Spiritualism
Frank Podmore was a researcher with the SPR (Society for Psychical Research) and a very open, non-biased researcher. His two volume work, "Modern Spiritualism:A History and Criticism" is one of the major works in the Spiritualist area. He accumulates and presents masses of evidence and presents that evidence from all sides of the question. As a Spiritualist minister, I became frustrated at the end of Vol 1, when after all the evidence was presented, Frank arrived at the point of saying, that all things considered, there was so far no supernatural activity in Spiritualism. I wanted to say, "Frank, what are you thinking???!!" His work is extremely well done, well thought out, well written and full of detail. If you have not studied Spiritualism, Podmore's work is a great place to start. I wrote my Master's thesis on "The Science of Mediumship and Evidence of Survival". Podmore's books were among my best sources, especially for the early days of the movement. Please consider this source as primary. ... Read more
