3-0 out of 5 stars deep
This book is anything but a how to.If you are in to the big picture of life and open to deep discusion on reality and the source of life, you'll enjoy it but you need to know, this book says you need professional assistance to preform transcendental meditation correctly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning: This Is A Cult!
Of course, TM is a cult and it isn't much different than the Scientology organisation. They are both corrupt.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspiring and profound
I first read this extraordinary book thirty eight years ago. I could not put it down. I immediately read it through again and over the years since, I have read and re-read various chapters and sections, for this is a book of divine realization, written by a profoundly wise and enlightened world teacher. There is nothing else on self realisation on the planet that is expressed in such a clear, scientific, and penetrating way. It is an analysis of life, being, existence, God realisation and world peace for the age in which we live. You will be inspired to learn Transcendental Meditation from a certified TM Teacher and then the magical journey to self realisation truly begins, and you will go on realising how Maharishi in his life and in this book, is raising your own life and life on earth to fulfillment and blissful perfection. Anyone who aspires to live life to the fullest or who wishes to be a leader of society should read this book and learn Transcendental Meditation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not waste your time
As a student of the different philosophical concepts of man, I could not avoid to come across the MT of the Maharishi.
The Transcendental Meditation TM is the invention of M. It is said that 6 Million people used this technique. M. tried to adapt the Indian meditative and philosophic tradition of the Vedanta to the western lifestyle to make it a big seller. TM is praised as a means for more creativity, health, intelligence and efficiency. His followers like to hint at scientific research, that TM reduces stress and has many other positive results. But they are silent about the negative effects that all occult techniques have. For prove of this read other books. You need to see both sides and recognize the risks! This is always the same business with such sort of spiritual advice! Emphasize that which is good for your purse and the immediate success and forget about the rest of it.
TM was becoming even a spiritual exercise for managers to deal with the daily stress. But the costs could be different in the long run. Losing the rational view upon matters of daily life, which is what I observe with people who practised similar meditation tools.
It is suggested in TM that everybody should have to find "himself" to discover his inner godliness. As there is a common trend for more spirituality in our time according to that what must be suitable for the individual taste this idea of God in oneself, which is taught in TM seems to fit perfectly for self-centered people. The similarity to the words of the serpent in the garden of Eden is striking: "Your eyes will open and you will be like God and recognize what is good and bad!" Therefore TM is nothing new as an eye-opener of doubtful origin which has brought the Maharishi many Rolls Royce.
TM does not so much sell a meditation technique. In theory it is an utopia. It is nothing more than wishful thinking to create on this world peace through meditation or any other spiritual means. It is a vain hope. Peace for world nor for oneself cannot be created by thinking alone!

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of knowledge in one book...
There are two types of people who will read this book: those who haven't learned Transcendental Meditation yet and those who have.

For those who haven't, the book certainly provides the most in depth understanding and analysis of this unique meditation and its benefits in daily life. This insight can help you understand how TM is different from other meditations and decide for yourself if you want to go ahead and learn the technique from a qualified instructor.

For those who have already learned Transcendental Meditation, this book explains in detail the theory behind TM and acts as a valuable and authoritative resource to help you with questions either you or anyone else may have about the technique.

But in the end, it is just a book - if you want to experience the real thing, there is no substitute for actually learning it the only way you can - from a qualified teacher, one-to-one.

I did, and I've never looked back. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this comprehensive introduction to the Transcendental Meditation Technique
Very informative and easy to read.I loved this book because it uses humor to take the mystery out of what can be a very confusing and misunderstood topic. Not intended as a 'how-to' book, "The TM Book" explains what TM is and what it is not. What it is: Easy, Effortless and Unique. What it is not: Religion, Lifestyle or Philosophy. This book introduces the reader to TM's wide range of benefits like decreased blood pressure, better sleep, less stress, better relationships and even lower crime rate!Everyone should get this book and read it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a big fan of this book at all
I was very very very very disappointed in this book. It was one huge advertisement for the seminar. And really, just a reiteration of what is on the website. It basically paints the picture of people from all walks of life, doctors, lawyers, stock brokers, athletes, and mothers or anyone who regularly experience high levels of stress, (and dont we all, if we didn't, we would not be living) and how the patented TM technique, helps them exceed their goals, and live in peace.

And here comes transcendental meditation to the rescue!!!!! In just 15 minutes, twice a day, if you use this special technique, (and only a qualified teacher can properly show you this technique, that can only be learned in person, NOT by a book or video or blah blah blah.) your life is saved!!! and you are now a happy camper!!!!

What a joke!!!! I can not beleive I spent five minutes reading this crap.

That is the only saving grace, that it is an easy read, and that it goes quick. It follows a 3rd grade reading type of style. OK, I am exaggerating a bit. But you get the point.

Please, do not buy this book. I truly beleive in the power of meditation, but ANY meditation, done with consistency and practice, is very very powerful, and you will earn the benefits just the same.

Save your pennies on this one people.

2-0 out of 5 stars Monotonous
The TM Book is supposed to be a how to book on practicing Transcendental Meditation. In all actuality, this book is basically the repetition of the same points in different phrasing, all of which emphasize the same thing. The writers could have gotten the same point through in fifty pages. The authors use an arsenal of graphs and facts to support their claim that TM will change your life physiologically, psychologically, and sociologically.Although the results from the charts seem to be quite good evidence to support their method, the authors give their own interpretation of the data making it less and less unbelievable. The use of illustrations throughout the book gives the reader something to look at and be distracted by.I think the authors strategically placed interesting pictures in the places that they repeated themselves to steal the reader's attention from the monotonous droning of the same information.Using a man asking questions about the method, the authors try to make the seemingly boring book interesting by giving each of the characters individual personalities. The character answering the questions gives long intricate explanations for simple questions, therefore making it seem like the information is important. This book says what the TM technique is not and what it is, which is supposed to be easy and fun, but it never really tells how to do TM.It seems as though it is a ploy to get people to attend TM workshops and spend their money.Through the TM technique, a person supposedly becomes more creative and more relaxed with less and less anxiety and any bad feelings making a person have a feeling of fulfillment. Anybody is supposed to be able to do it, toddlers to the elderly. To me this seems too simple a solution for such a big problem.I would recommend this to a person who actually is thinking about attending one of these TM workshops; otherwise it is just a waste of time.

1-0 out of 5 stars gouging
I have not read the book but I took TM many years ago and I thought it was expensive then, and that was about $250.00.I practiced TM and did have some excellent results.I can never reveal my mantra but I can tell you that the technique is very simple and you learn how to do it in about 5 minutes. The rest is just performing what you learned as a meditation.I have since gone on to other types of meditation also. But basically, this is a mantra meditation. You can use the universal mantra "Aum" or "OM" for this purpose without spending $1,000. You are paying this money just to get your own mantra which is not to be revealed to anyone.

Meditation was meant to be a spiritual experience, bringing you closer to oneness with the all pervading consciousness which is God.Any real meditative goal is really this process.During the course of doing this, there are many benefits, including those discussed by TM.A truly spiritual lesson should not be an opportunity for gouging people.$1,000 is absurd and I have to question the motivations of the organization.Something is not right about that.Ultimately, spiritually-related matters should be free, but understandably, it is not feasible. However, charging excess sums of money is a sin and goes against the spiritual laws.

So, if you want to benefit from this meditation, you should sit quietly with back erect and mentally chant your mantra (no specific method is required, just let it come naturally) (e.g., "OM") over and over again. You allow your mind to quiet gently without stress or pressure.Concentrate on the "OM" but don't strain. If you find your mind wandering during the meditation, just gently realize and return to the mantra.Do this for 20 minutes, twice a day.Preferably, in the morning upon awakening and in the afternoon before dinner.Do this, you have saved yourself $1,000 and you are contributing to the spiritual evolution of this planet.

If you are truly seeking a spiritual avenue, I suggest you check out the Self Realization Fellowship, reading the Autobiography of a Yogi first. If this doesn't awaken a spiritual desire, then nothing will. ... Read more

Product Description
In this "unexpected delight,"* filmmaker David Lynch describes his personal methods of capturing and working with ideas, and the immense creative benefits he has experienced from the practice of meditation.

Now in a beautiful paperback edition, David Lynch'sCatching the Big Fish provides a rare window into the internationally acclaimed filmmaker's methods as an artist, his personal working style, and the immense creative benefits he has experienced from the practice of meditation.

Catching the Big Fish comes as a revelation to the legion of fans who have longed to better understand Lynch's personal vision. And it is equally compelling to those who wonder how they can nurture their own creativity.

Catching Ideas

Ideas are like fish.

If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you've got to go deeper.

Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure. They're huge and abstract. And they're very beautiful.

I look for a certain kind of fish that is important to me, one that can translate to cinema. But there are all kinds of fish swimming down there. There are fish for business, fish for sports. There are fish for everything.

Everything, anything that is a thing, comes up from the deepest level. Modern physics calls that level the Unified Field. The more your consciousness-your awareness-is expanded, the deeper you go toward this source, and the bigger the fish you can catch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pearl After Pearl After Pearl of Wisdom
You will quickly find that the author is a big believer in transcendental meditation. To him it is the fix all for the world's problems.I really enjoyed engaging a conversation with the Mr. Lynch throughout the book.As he quotes, the world is as you are.If you read this book with a limited view you will get very little out of it. That is okay.Read it once and put it away. Then pick it up again and see ifyou can't find another pearl of wisdom in it.Better yet, go to the library and get the audiobook version.Having Mr. Lynch converse with you is wonderful.

If you are looking for a book about how to use TM - this isn't it.
If you are looking for a book about how TM can help you in your creative process this is it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Si tienes curiosidad en Meditacion...

1-0 out of 5 stars You won't even catch a small fish with this book
This book should really have been an article in a film magazine, its that short.I was hoping that there would be a lot of information regarding TM, but there wasn't any.As others have noted the book is really just ramblings about how great LA is, and how he gets ideas for his films, seemingly by just shooting from the hip and trial and error.Actually I'm shocked at how uncreative the thought process in this book is.If TM is really the key then why can't he share it with everyone. The whole [...] and David Lynch seem to be keeping it a secret so you can go to their website and pay $1,500 to learn how to do it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity
This book is not about Meditation, it's about David Lynch. If Lynch Meditated for 30 years, why is he still a chain smoker???

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Interesting
Lynch is a cutting edge artist whose films have become increasingly interesting overtime. This little text is a collection of fragments and reflections regarding his life as a creative artist and his relationship to transcendental meditation. Lynch finds an ocean of abstract ideas in the 'unified consciousness' provided through the technique of TM. There are plenty of useful anecdotes here-both on meditating and the creative life in general. Lynch is clearly a somewhat solipsistic man, but his work continues to expand in beauty and creative depth so he must be doing something right. As he points out, 'he's not very good with words,' so this little book is not exactly a robustly analytic exegesis of his process, but it still provides some fascinating insights all the same. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was under the impression I would actually be reading about the techniques, breath work, mantra, etc. used in TM. I feel like I bought a book of advertising and contact lists.I wish I had read reviews on this before I purchased it!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I love this book about TM. It gave me the answers to the questions I had in mind about Transcendental Meditation. The book is easy to read and I think I found it particularily interesting reading about other peoples experiences of TM. For anyone thinking of learning meditation, I recommend them to read this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable example of marketing drivel
Targeting excitable housewives and undereducated middle-managers, this entire book consists of a business case to enroll in one of Mahesh Yogi's schools.

I do not dispute merits of his technique - how could I, if there is not a single word about it in the book?! Thank Zeus I've got this book from the library - I've seen more exciting writing coming out of the Federal Government's accounting departments. One should be paid to read this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Introduction
This is a very thorough introduction to the Transcendental Meditation technique. It doesn't promise to teach you to meditate so I don't know what all the complaints about that are. If you want the benefits that come from the TM technique, you have to learn it properly, from a trained teacher in a series on meetings and personal instruction. Its impossible to learn the real TM technique from a book.

This book does save you the first step of going to learn TM, the Introductory lecture. You can go directly to step 2, the Preparatory Lecture. And then decide if you want the benefits and learn the technique.

If you don't want to buy the book, you can read it online at www.TM.org. But its nice to have around so you can read it anywhere and look clearly at the research. Meditation techniques are very different with very different results. The scientific research is clear that other techniques do not bring the wide range of benefits that come with the TM technique. So don't think that reading a book called "how to meditate" is going to give you the proven benefits of the TM program, shown by 600 scientific studies. It won't give you the free lifetime follow-up that comes with TM instruction either.

So if you want to learn some sort of "meditation" from a book, don't buy this book.

If you want a thorough introduction to the most effective and scientifically-proven stress reduction and self-development technique, you can't go wrong buying this book. Then go to the TM program center and take advantage of the free Preparatory Lecture. You'll have all you need to make a wise decision about whether or not you want to go ahead and learn.

1-0 out of 5 stars Former TM student says TM is bogus
Im a former practitioner ofTranscendental Meditation(28 years). I also attended Maharishi International University. After 28 years of doing TM I came to the conclusion that TM is bogus. It did have some postive effects in the beginning but after a while I realized that my will was being oppressed.Maharishi International University really opened my eyes to the reality of TM. Maharishi International University was a joke. The food was atrocious and the courses third-rate. I got the feeling that all they were interested in was getting tuition fees from the students. The TM organization relies a lot on its practitioners ignoring a lot of what they they see as negative about TM and just focusing on the good points of TM. I have done a lot of research and reading over the last 20 years and have come to the conclusion ,based on my research and my own personal experiences, that Transcendental Meditation is at best a waste of time and at worst demonic in nature. I would advise anyone even mildly interested in TM to very carefully scrutinize what they say about God and Jesus. Anyone with any religous faith will find it at odds with belief in what the bible says about the suffering and redemption of Jesus. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars inappropriate title
This is one of the few books teaching readers how to get into transcendental meditation. Most TM experts claim that TM cannot be learnt from a book or tape.It is a good book with all kinds of meditations and solid cases. However it doesn't deal exclusively with TM.The subject of 'Mantras' a distinctive feature of TM is not mentioned at all. This book is very much an inspirational book like those by Norman Vincent Peale or Joseph Murphy. But is is quite well written and worth reading

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Misleading Title
While the title of this book may include the words 'Transcendental Meditation' on the cover, it is NOT the transcendental meditation as taught by Maharishi and which most people understand transcendental meditation to be. This book uses the term in a rather generic way to include various kinds of meditation that have been culled from different cultures and teachers. For example, Norvell has many exercises in this book that use the chakras as a point of focus for meditation. There are NO techniques in this book that even remotely resembles the techniques as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, so if you're looking for your typical TM book, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Having said that, the book is excellently written, with MANY different kinds of meditation for specific goals and purposes. There are many here who may derive great benefit from using these techniques, and undoubtedly many will. As for myself, I just received my copy yesterday and may post something in the future as to my own experience(s) with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book beyond compare!
Easily one of the best self-help books of this century, it presents the transcendental meditation techniques in a simple and understandable manner and outlines the INNUMERABLE BENEFITS(like health,wealth,creativity,problem-solving etc.) we can reap throughMetaphysics, that too, very QUICKLY.Your life will not be the sameafterreading and practising the easy-to-follow techniques in this book.It givesyou CONFIDENCE in place of dejection,SELF-ESTEEM in place ofdiffidence,STRENGTH in place of weakness, ENTHUSIASM in place of lassitudeand much, much more.It is no wonder that the author is one of the mostrespected and acclaimed masters in the field. Mr. Norvell's narrations ofthe several case-histories are also delightful and wholly absorbingreading.

It is however, saddening to note that almost all his books havebecome out-of-print. ... Read more

Product Description
In contrast to the generally dismal results of various approaches to rehabilitation, these consciousness-based strategies have proven effective in preventing crime and rehabilitating offenders!

This book will introduce you to a powerful, unique approach to offender rehabilitation and crime prevention. In contrast to the generally dismal results of most rehabilitation approaches, studies covering periods of 1-15 years indicate that this new approach—employing the Maharishi Transcendental Meditation® and TM-Sidhi programs—reduces recidivism from 35-50%.

Transcendental Meditation® in Criminal Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention provides the reader with a theoretical overview, new original research findings, and examples of practical implementation. With this book, you will explore what motivates people to commit crimes, with emphasis on stress and restricted self-development. Then you'll examine the results and policy implications of applying these consciousness-based techniques to offender rehabilitation and crime reduction. Transcendental Meditation® in Criminal Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention does not merely review the theory behind this innovative approach to rehabilitation and prevention but also emphasizes the practical value of the programs it describes and reports how techniques and strategies based on Transcendental Meditation® have been put to use in a variety of settings.

This book will familiarize the reader with: a rehabilitation approach so universal in its applicability that any adult or juvenile offender can begin it at the point of sentencing, during incarceration, or at the point of parole
the in-depth background on adult growth and higher states of consciousness necessary to understand this consciousness-based, developmental approach
the results of empirical studies conducted in prisons around the country, with up to 15 years of follow-up
a preview of how cost-effective the rehabilitation program might be
implications for public policy and the judicial system—including an innovative alternative sentencing program
how this approach deals not only with individuals but also with the community as a whole—when practiced by a small percentage of the population, the TM and TM-Sidhi programs may reduce crime in the larger community
how these society-level prevention programs may prove to be effecitive in reducing not only school violence in the community but, if applied on sufficient scale, war deaths and terrorism in the greater society ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to read, not understand.
I bought this book last week on somewhat of a whim. I regret now that I hadn't look more in-depth into the author (or the book at all really). While the concept of the book is very intriguing to me, it is poorly edited--if at all. Among the most distracting of grammatical errors were the comma splices. I'd have to say it was hard to get through just the first three pages solely based on the lack of editing. The author obviously knows what he is talking about, and may explain the topics well, however I feel the lack of correct punctuation shows lack of responsibility and therefore I do not recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - A must read
When I came accross this book on Amazon, I was a little sceptical as Iwasn't familiar with the author.. But then I thought what the heck, I'll give it a try.
Surprisingly, this book is well thought of, easy to read and understand. It has opened my mind to new ideas. It contains easy to follow meditation techniques to help me cope with everyday stress in life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bible idolatry
If the bible can be interpreted by millions of people in millions of ways, then it cannot be an arbiter of Truth. That is why all the christian churches cannot agree with each other.Since the bible was written, manipulated, and rearranged by men throughout history, bible worship is mere idolatry. One interpretation of the bible is that it says one should practice something like the Transcendental Meditation technique. So now what are you going to do?

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Quite superficial. It seems that the perspective this book takes is based more on fears and suspicions than on real knowledge of the subject. There isn't enough responsible, reasonable thought in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative

Very well written and researched and most useful to anyone wanting to know all about what various cults believe.

Product Description
A valuable resource for addressing/promoting the spiritual awakening/development for patients based on a thoroughly researched system of meditation

Nearly 40% of americans saw an alternative healthcare practitioner last year. Interest in Yoga—an aspect of ayurveda—is growing nationally and is starting to become part of more progressive treatment programs. Patients want more. Providers need to offer more. And choices need to be based on sciencetific research on complementary/alternative medicine, which is under-researched in the addictions treatment field right now. Their has been a flurry of interest in Trancendental Meditation (TM) the past few months, mostly due to very impressive research on lowering blood pressure—especially in African Americans. This groundbreaking, scientifically based book shows how TM can have profound health-promoting effects on addictions as well, according to recent research on profound brain changes caused by TM practice.

Self-Recovery acquaints readers with the use of Transcendental Meditation program and Maharishi Ayur-Veda. This natural comprehensive approach to health care, as brought to light from the ancient Vedic tradition of India by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, allows individuals to break negative habits that arise from an incomplete understanding of the relationship between mind, body, and environment. Self-Recovery shows how this ancient system of mind-body medicine, through its mental and physical procedures, can be used to treat addictive diseases effectively.

The first book written on the application of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program and Maharishi Ayur-Veda to addictions treatment, this volume is interdisciplinary in scope with original chapters by psychologists, physicians, physiologists, neurochemists, and other addictions professionals who offer an alternative paradigm to understanding and treating addictions.

In contrast to conventional treatments, the TM program and Maharishi Ayur-Veda appear to provide a natural, comprehensive treatment approach that profoundly influences all levels of individual life that can impact on the addictive process. Not overly technical, Self-Recovery shares the pioneering experiences of clinicians using these holistic procedures as well as the striking findings of researchers who have integrated them into current chemical dependency treatments. For readers without prior introduction to this new approach, the TM program and Maharishi Ayur-Veda are briefly but thoroughly described. Readers looking for an effective mind-body treatment of addictions that is holistic in nature will find it in this book as it introduces them to this very ancient, but quite relevant, system of healing that can act in a complementary fashion with modern psychological and medical approaches to addictive disorders. Practitioners will find a description of Maharishi Ayur-Veda programs and learn about incorporating them into daily practice. Psychotherapists will learn how this unique program can affect the recovery process from addictive diseases.

Through rich presentations of theory, research, and clinical case studies, Self-Recovery makes knowledge of Maharishi Ayur-Veda and the addictions come alive. The book is divided into four sections, the first of which contains an examination of the theoretical underpinnings and existing research on the TM program and its applications to addictions treatment. The second section features original research on the impact of TM on severe alcoholism and nicotine addiction. In section three, clinicians share case studies on the impact of the TM program on personal growth experienced during recovery from alcohol and other drug addictions. Section four presents theory and clinical application of the twenty approaches of Maharishi Ayur-Veda in chemical dependency treatment. A vital source of information on addictions treatment, this book is essential rea ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very inspiring
Charles Alexander's book, Self Recovery is particulary helpful because it includes many different experiences with recovering from drug abuse. In some, the recovery is simple and immediate with beginning the regular practice of TM.He also gives examples of more difficult cases where recovery is interruptedand regained several times before self recovery is achieved. The study imvolving alcoholics living on the street wasespecially important as it showed that by adding a stress management strategy to a traditional treatment program, some actual progress was made where progress is not usually seen.

That there is a stress management technique effective enough to break the grip of drug addiction is exciting. That it issometimes challenging to keep people on the program is realistic. That it is sometimes incredibly easy and immediate is corroberated in the prioneering work on TM that Dr. Herbert Benson and Dr. Keith Wallace did at Harvard in the early 70's. It is described in Benson's book, The Relaxation Response.

Dr. Alexander's book is timely. The only real way to win the war on drugs is to reduce the demand for drugs.TM is a useful tool in establing self sufficiency, clear thinking and success in life. ... Read more
