2-0 out of 5 stars The great cost of enlightenment
This book I found to be a difficult read. It says that this form of meditation needs to be taught to you, and it can eventually bring about world peace. Well, it neglects to say that it costs about $2,500 to do so. It also says that you cannot become enlightened unless you do nothing like business or run a household, so it is not for most people. How does the maharishi fit in here, being a man of business, if I am not mistaken?

This is confusing. You already need a lot of excess cash to learn TM; where does this money go? If they think TM is the cure to the world's ills, then why not make it more accessible, ie. make it affordable to the masses? I would think David Lynch has the right idea; his foundation is making it available to school children. Perhaps these children will one day decide that no one owns TM and it should be taught to anyone wo wants it for free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Success Hunter ?, BUY IT AND READ IT NOW !
MAHARISHI MAHESH YOGI Who I wish ALL POSITIVE AND WEALTH, HEALTH AND WHAT EVER GOOD THINGS YOU THING that it EXISTS for HIM, HE easily gave the world the real technique of how to reach what ever you want, You want my opinion; "IT IS WORTH TO INVEST BUY it and give it to all the ones you LOVE! "

4-0 out of 5 stars TM's Price Debunked and More
For those curious about why TM is so "expensive":

Basically what happened was, in the 60's and 70's TM used be very reasonably priced ($50-150), and because of this many people used it and began to abuse it. Maharishi's response to this was to raise the price to filter out all those who didn't truly appreciate it. Unfortunately, Maharishi is thoroughly anti-capitalist and has a seemingly distorted view of western wealth (i.e. thinks everyone is rich), hence the hefty $2500 price tag on the technique in the west (it's dirt cheap in poorer countries). But, if you think of TM instruction as an educational course (it is), then $2,500 isn't that much to pay for a 3-day course and lifelong support checkups for the technique (colleges charge $40,000 a year now right?).

As for those who accuse Maharishi's technique of being a profiteering scam hear two things. First, even with the high price tags of its technique, the TM movement barely has enough money to maintain its own centers. Second, the organization's belief in the peace-creating impact of large group TM practice (as supported by studies in DC, Moscow, and Beirut) is so strong that they are currently offering free instruction in advanced TM techniques to those willing to meditate in these groups, and are even paying (yes paying$$) advanced meditators to participate in these groups. Would a group that promotes a "marketing scam" do that?

If I asked you if you'd pay $2500 to lower daily stress, your chance of heart disease, depression, and mental illness, increase your brain power, and likely lengthen your lifespan (many TM'ers look a good 15 years younger than they are) you'd probably throw down the cash in a heartbeat. But when it requires doing some "weird" technique that's claims thouroughly challenge the mainstream western societal paradigm, you naturally clutch your wallet and walk away. Well consider freeing yourself of that paradigm.

Read this book, but keep in mind that you don't have to subscribe to the more esoteric hindu-esque ideas to benefit from TM.

The botton line is that TM is a flexible technique that can benefit anyone from a conservative christian diabetic who wants to reduce his blood-sugar to a neospiritual hippie who wants to become an enlightened yogic master.

Try it, it can't hurt.

- 9-year practitioner who's thankful for every day of it.

(Also, for those curious about my subjective observation of TM'ers looking very youthful I can share one experience I had when I went to get my practice checked at a TM center. The center was run by a bright young couple. Thewife was a beautiful girl who looked about 21 or 22, the husband looked early to mid thirties. I later found out that the woman was 33 and the husband was over fifty. That experience alone was enough to affirm my confindece in TM.)

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about the simplest thing in the world ...
This is a wonderful book.I read it when I was 19 years old in the late 1970s because I was interested in spiritual ideas that would lead to a wider view of life, the world, the universe, etc.It certainly did that quite well.If all one wants to know is how to meditate transcendentally, just read the chapter titled "How to Contact Being"; it's really about the easiest thing a person can "learn" how to do.I use quotation marks around learn because most all people meditate in this way all the time; they just don't realize it, or do it systematically.

How do I know? When I was 21 my dear old mother paid $150 for me to take the transcendental meditation course. (She was a physician at a student health center and had seen her patients become healthier as they reduced their anxieties by meditating. Was the benefit psychosomatic, I asked her?Of course, she answered, the health benefits of anxiety/stress reduction are ALL psychosomatic but nonetheless real.)When I first "learned" I worried that "nothing was happening", so I asked my TM instructor. He basically answered that as long as my experience was consistent with the description of meditation in the book's chapter titled "How to Contact Being", then exactly what was supposed to be happening was indeed happening. In fact, as I continued to meditate over the next several days/months/years I became aware that what was happening during meditation was *exactly* as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi describes in the chapter.

As I recall Maharishi Mahesh Yogi points out in the book that meditation is completely natural in the sense people already know, subconsciously, how to do it and do it all the time without knowing it.About 10 years ago I tested this by teaching a friend of mine TM.The teaching consisted of explaining the ideas in the first 50-or-so pages of the book to him, then guiding him in the choice of a neutral mantra. He then practiced TM for several weeks and we had a few discussions where I confirmed his experiences were essentially the exactly the same as those I experienced in TM over about 15 years.

So ... the book provides an excellent explanation of what TM is, and why it's beneficial and important to us and society.

1-0 out of 5 stars what is the good book on meditation
i logged on to the site of this maharishi and and in just a few clicks i got to a point where i cannot go beyond if i couldnot spend few hundred bucks. i am in to meditation and its philosophy from my school and i am an indian.(so i know pretty much more about all meditation & hindu philosophy stuff than foreigners and its difficult to foolme) and i have never come acrossa so called teacher who asks for money to sell his so called secret.

the problem with the meditation is no one will take you in the arms and carry you. you have to walk on your own feet allalone. mark my words" anyone saying "give me some bucks and i will take you there" is only fooling you. money is necessary isfor oranizations to spread knowledge. but one can always tell the difference between asking money for survival (in the form of donation and which usually small) or make money(2,500$).

meditation(zen, indian, buddhist) is a subjective science. it has survived from centuries even with out all those statistics these people give.

if you are insearch of a comprehensive book abouthindu philosophy and meditation, read "Raja Yoga" by swami vivekananda.

he is the authority on meditation. his life says so. and this book is a beautiful explanation of the yoga sutras of "Patanjali"
the original ancient indian saint, who brought into existance the comprehensive system of yoga.(yoga here is not practising different postures. yoga literally means 'science to know oneself' meditation is but one step in it)( the popular meaning of yoga- which is practising different postures- is actually called 'hathayoga'; B.K.S.Iyengar is the authority here) no one can be a greater authority than sage patanjali in this area. the book has original sanskrit text, with beautiful explanation by a competent author in the form of swami vivekananda. it is the purest knowledge from ancient india. dont expect to understand every thing in the book in a few moments or days. many things seem irrelavant, but as you go further and every thing unfolds you can see the beauty. the bud blooms by itself when the time comes. you cannot hasten it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to read, not understand.
I bought this book last week on somewhat of a whim. I regret now that I hadn't look more in-depth into the author (or the book at all really). While the concept of the book is very intriguing to me, it is poorly edited--if at all. Among the most distracting of grammatical errors were the comma splices. I'd have to say it was hard to get through just the first three pages solely based on the lack of editing. The author obviously knows what he is talking about, and may explain the topics well, however I feel the lack of correct punctuation shows lack of responsibility and therefore I do not recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - A must read
When I came accross this book on Amazon, I was a little sceptical as Iwasn't familiar with the author.. But then I thought what the heck, I'll give it a try.
Surprisingly, this book is well thought of, easy to read and understand. It has opened my mind to new ideas. It contains easy to follow meditation techniques to help me cope with everyday stress in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Introduction
This is a very thorough introduction to the Transcendental Meditation technique. It doesn't promise to teach you to meditate so I don't know what all the complaints about that are. If you want the benefits that come from the TM technique, you have to learn it properly, from a trained teacher in a series on meetings and personal instruction. Its impossible to learn the real TM technique from a book.

This book does save you the first step of going to learn TM, the Introductory lecture. You can go directly to step 2, the Preparatory Lecture. And then decide if you want the benefits and learn the technique.

If you don't want to buy the book, you can read it online at www.TM.org. But its nice to have around so you can read it anywhere and look clearly at the research. Meditation techniques are very different with very different results. The scientific research is clear that other techniques do not bring the wide range of benefits that come with the TM technique. So don't think that reading a book called "how to meditate" is going to give you the proven benefits of the TM program, shown by 600 scientific studies. It won't give you the free lifetime follow-up that comes with TM instruction either.

So if you want to learn some sort of "meditation" from a book, don't buy this book.

If you want a thorough introduction to the most effective and scientifically-proven stress reduction and self-development technique, you can't go wrong buying this book. Then go to the TM program center and take advantage of the free Preparatory Lecture. You'll have all you need to make a wise decision about whether or not you want to go ahead and learn.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is not a book on technique.
This is an easy read with lots and lots of testimonials, however; I did purchase TM with hopes that it would offer details into the technique. It does not.At the end of the book it states the practice is only taught by a TM master at the minimum cost of $2500. That little bit would have been helpful to me before I purchased the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Former TM student says TM is bogus
Im a former practitioner ofTranscendental Meditation(28 years). I also attended Maharishi International University. After 28 years of doing TM I came to the conclusion that TM is bogus. It did have some postive effects in the beginning but after a while I realized that my will was being oppressed.Maharishi International University really opened my eyes to the reality of TM. Maharishi International University was a joke. The food was atrocious and the courses third-rate. I got the feeling that all they were interested in was getting tuition fees from the students. The TM organization relies a lot on its practitioners ignoring a lot of what they they see as negative about TM and just focusing on the good points of TM. I have done a lot of research and reading over the last 20 years and have come to the conclusion ,based on my research and my own personal experiences, that Transcendental Meditation is at best a waste of time and at worst demonic in nature. I would advise anyone even mildly interested in TM to very carefully scrutinize what they say about God and Jesus. Anyone with any religous faith will find it at odds with belief in what the bible says about the suffering and redemption of Jesus.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is good but you must spend $2500 to learn TM
TM is the most effective meditation technique out there (scientifically validated), but if you want to learn TM you have to spend $2500! Fortunately a few independent teachers, such as Raymond Harrison or the TM Independent UK group, are teaching TM for a reasonable price.

4-0 out of 5 stars From someone who Meditates....
This book isn't as good as Maharishi's "Science of Being and Art of Living", although it is pretty close. Do not be fooled by these people who don't understand TM and who have never done it. If they have, they would learn not to open their mouths before they start saying the organization is a fraud. I've been meditating for years under Maharishi's teachings and I HAVE seen my life improve in just about every aspect that is talked about in this book. Of course no life is actually "PERFECT", especially in the way MOST OF THESE ANGRY PEOPLE WOULD LIKE IT TO BE! Don't listen to those people, the TM movement is one of the GREATEST MOVEMENTS IN THE WORLD TODAY (2005). If you really want to seek ANCIENT WISDOM like the rest of us has, you must go through the proper channels. Pearls are not thrown out to the swine. And these people who talk so harshly of TM must be the swine the parabole refers to. Also, TM can not be learned from a book, that is why you will find no book that will teach you TM because IT IS TOO PERSONAL AND TOO INDIVIDUALIZED to be learned from a book. If you are seriously interested in learning TM, and I advise everyone i know to, check out Maharishi's book, "The Science of Being and the Art of Living",
or this one which is almost as good. I hope I could clarify a few things for those who really have a thirst for this ancient technique. Good Day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this comprehensive introduction to the Transcendental Meditation Technique
Very informative and easy to read.I loved this book because it uses humor to take the mystery out of what can be a very confusing and misunderstood topic. Not intended as a 'how-to' book, "The TM Book" explains what TM is and what it is not. What it is: Easy, Effortless and Unique. What it is not: Religion, Lifestyle or Philosophy. This book introduces the reader to TM's wide range of benefits like decreased blood pressure, better sleep, less stress, better relationships and even lower crime rate!Everyone should get this book and read it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a big fan of this book at all
I was very very very very disappointed in this book. It was one huge advertisement for the seminar. And really, just a reiteration of what is on the website. It basically paints the picture of people from all walks of life, doctors, lawyers, stock brokers, athletes, and mothers or anyone who regularly experience high levels of stress, (and dont we all, if we didn't, we would not be living) and how the patented TM technique, helps them exceed their goals, and live in peace.

And here comes transcendental meditation to the rescue!!!!! In just 15 minutes, twice a day, if you use this special technique, (and only a qualified teacher can properly show you this technique, that can only be learned in person, NOT by a book or video or blah blah blah.) your life is saved!!! and you are now a happy camper!!!!

What a joke!!!! I can not beleive I spent five minutes reading this crap.

That is the only saving grace, that it is an easy read, and that it goes quick. It follows a 3rd grade reading type of style. OK, I am exaggerating a bit. But you get the point.

Please, do not buy this book. I truly beleive in the power of meditation, but ANY meditation, done with consistency and practice, is very very powerful, and you will earn the benefits just the same.

Save your pennies on this one people.

2-0 out of 5 stars Monotonous
The TM Book is supposed to be a how to book on practicing Transcendental Meditation. In all actuality, this book is basically the repetition of the same points in different phrasing, all of which emphasize the same thing. The writers could have gotten the same point through in fifty pages. The authors use an arsenal of graphs and facts to support their claim that TM will change your life physiologically, psychologically, and sociologically.Although the results from the charts seem to be quite good evidence to support their method, the authors give their own interpretation of the data making it less and less unbelievable. The use of illustrations throughout the book gives the reader something to look at and be distracted by.I think the authors strategically placed interesting pictures in the places that they repeated themselves to steal the reader's attention from the monotonous droning of the same information.Using a man asking questions about the method, the authors try to make the seemingly boring book interesting by giving each of the characters individual personalities. The character answering the questions gives long intricate explanations for simple questions, therefore making it seem like the information is important. This book says what the TM technique is not and what it is, which is supposed to be easy and fun, but it never really tells how to do TM.It seems as though it is a ploy to get people to attend TM workshops and spend their money.Through the TM technique, a person supposedly becomes more creative and more relaxed with less and less anxiety and any bad feelings making a person have a feeling of fulfillment. Anybody is supposed to be able to do it, toddlers to the elderly. To me this seems too simple a solution for such a big problem.I would recommend this to a person who actually is thinking about attending one of these TM workshops; otherwise it is just a waste of time.

1-0 out of 5 stars gouging
I have not read the book but I took TM many years ago and I thought it was expensive then, and that was about $250.00.I practiced TM and did have some excellent results.I can never reveal my mantra but I can tell you that the technique is very simple and you learn how to do it in about 5 minutes. The rest is just performing what you learned as a meditation.I have since gone on to other types of meditation also. But basically, this is a mantra meditation. You can use the universal mantra "Aum" or "OM" for this purpose without spending $1,000. You are paying this money just to get your own mantra which is not to be revealed to anyone.

Meditation was meant to be a spiritual experience, bringing you closer to oneness with the all pervading consciousness which is God.Any real meditative goal is really this process.During the course of doing this, there are many benefits, including those discussed by TM.A truly spiritual lesson should not be an opportunity for gouging people.$1,000 is absurd and I have to question the motivations of the organization.Something is not right about that.Ultimately, spiritually-related matters should be free, but understandably, it is not feasible. However, charging excess sums of money is a sin and goes against the spiritual laws.

So, if you want to benefit from this meditation, you should sit quietly with back erect and mentally chant your mantra (no specific method is required, just let it come naturally) (e.g., "OM") over and over again. You allow your mind to quiet gently without stress or pressure.Concentrate on the "OM" but don't strain. If you find your mind wandering during the meditation, just gently realize and return to the mantra.Do this for 20 minutes, twice a day.Preferably, in the morning upon awakening and in the afternoon before dinner.Do this, you have saved yourself $1,000 and you are contributing to the spiritual evolution of this planet.

If you are truly seeking a spiritual avenue, I suggest you check out the Self Realization Fellowship, reading the Autobiography of a Yogi first. If this doesn't awaken a spiritual desire, then nothing will.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
This book offers a lot of insight into the benefits of Transcendental Meditation (TM).It is not a how-to book, but there are no how-to books. You can only learn this technique from a qualifiedinstructor.

Denniston's book is a great introduction to the benefits ofthe TM technique. It is straight forward and easy to follow.A greatcompanion to this book is TM Transcendental Meditation by Robert Roth. Both of these are the premier titles of the Transcendental MeditationOrganization (www.tm.org).

The results of TM are immediate.$1,000 is alot of money to pay to learn this technique, but once you start practicingTM you will feel that every penny was worth it.After just practicing TMonce I had so much energy. I went home and cleaned my entire apartment injust a few hours--a chore that used to be an all-day event.Tasks thatused to seem demanding became effortless.

Practicing TM also increasesyour entire well-being.You will feel blissful and happier.Big problemsbecome manageable. Personal stores of the results of TM are also presented.

This book discusses the many benefits of TM including scientificstudies that discuss the physiological benefits of the technique.I highlyrecommend the book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun Read but Shows a Lack of Understanding about Meditation
First, let me state that I enjoyed reading this book. Right off the bat, it's hard to find anything about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's life and this alone makes it worth reading. The style was also enjoyable. It was fun at times and when the author wasn't being coy, cynical or sarcastic, he could spin a good tale. The disappointing part for me was the author's lack of understanding about yoga and meditation in general, which often led to misinterpretations on his part. I'll site just one example. Mr. Mason states, and in a rather snide tone I might add, that Maharishi claimed his TM technique offered and embodied what other classical yogic paths offered. The example, found on pages 174 and 175, sites Maharishi as informing his students that they already were enjoying the benefits of Laya and Raja yoga which awaken kundalini energy and stabilize the enlightened state. The author responds; "It must surely have appeared unbelievable to his devotees that the Maharishi could teach them a system that could rival the most venerated schools of practice. But this was the Maharishi's claim, and certainly whilst they were in his company it appeared to them possible, even likely, that this was so. They were insufficiently knowledgeable in these matters to challenge his generalizations and they most certainly did not wish to engage in confrontation." The problem being, it is actually Mr. Mason who is 'insufficiently knowledgeable' in these matters. The awakening of kundalini is an essential part of almost every meditation and yogic path available, and it's typical and most frequent method of awakening is through repeating a mantra given by an enlightened Master. Maharishi was most likely simply telling his students what every other teacher or Guru tells their students. I've heard several well known Meditation Masters of both Hindu and Buddhist lineages say exactly the same thing. Sometimes kundalini is awakened through yoga asanas, sometimes devotion, sometimes mantra, etc. This is only one such example.
On another matter, Mr. Mason misses a great opportunity to explore Maharishi's stated purpose for yogic flying and the reasons for the organizations shift from a grassroots movement focused on individual development and TM, to a pyramid downward flow strategy, mirroring the governmental and corporate structures of our time. Maharishi stated during his Larry King interview aired, May 12, 2002 that individual development approaches and "talking" no longer worked because of the state of the world at large. Therefore, an attempt to effect the environment and world consciousness had become his organization's focus. This is the stuff that great stories are made of but once again Mr. Mason prefers to revert to sophomoric sarcasm and eyewinks towards his readers; prematurely ending his book leaving the reader waiting for his next updated edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fair Portrayal.
I myself am a meditator and I have to say, this is a great book.Paul Mason gets beyond hero worship and shows that even the enlightened are human.Maharishi never comes across as a monster and never comes across as a fool. However, I feel Mason's rendition of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was an essential viewing of the sage's aspirations, be they sometimes strange.Upon finishing this book I felt I had a little more insight into someone who previously seemed unbelievably flawless, and now felt like a human being one could relate to and come off with their own opinion.

1-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't impressed
This author must have an axe to grind.I have some familiarity with Maharishi's TM Movement myself and continue to be blown away by the sheer volume of independent scientific research supporting the Movement's claims of health, relationship and societal benefits, much of it funded by the N.I.H.This book is definitely not the unbiased work it is purported to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rational look at TM
There are many TM books written by those in the TM movement that are biased with all kinds of claims, from unbelievable health benefits to flying! This book is a very balanced account of Transcendental Meditation.

3-0 out of 5 stars TM practitioner exposes the BS underlying it all
Well I bought this book used for three dollars and it was worth every penny. In the very beginning inside the cover it states that Paul Mason has practiced TM for over twenty years yet throughout the book he seems negative about his own Guru.Perhaps he is being truthful(the reason I gave three stars) but he does not mention the benefits of TM for himself REALLY so is he trapped in a mere habit of doing TM everyday? Also he fails to mention that capitalistic Westerners are running the TM movement for the elderly Guru and with or without his permission are ripping people off for ungodly sums of money for mere words. It costs $2,500.00 to learn TM and $3000.00 to learn to hop around in the lotus position for the Sidhi techniques. He goes farther to disprove and discredit TM than a lot of anti-TM authors....thanks Paul for telling people what a line of BS TM really is. :) Save your money and look elsewhere.... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars inappropriate title
This is one of the few books teaching readers how to get into transcendental meditation. Most TM experts claim that TM cannot be learnt from a book or tape.It is a good book with all kinds of meditations and solid cases. However it doesn't deal exclusively with TM.The subject of 'Mantras' a distinctive feature of TM is not mentioned at all. This book is very much an inspirational book like those by Norman Vincent Peale or Joseph Murphy. But is is quite well written and worth reading

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Misleading Title
While the title of this book may include the words 'Transcendental Meditation' on the cover, it is NOT the transcendental meditation as taught by Maharishi and which most people understand transcendental meditation to be. This book uses the term in a rather generic way to include various kinds of meditation that have been culled from different cultures and teachers. For example, Norvell has many exercises in this book that use the chakras as a point of focus for meditation. There are NO techniques in this book that even remotely resembles the techniques as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, so if you're looking for your typical TM book, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Having said that, the book is excellently written, with MANY different kinds of meditation for specific goals and purposes. There are many here who may derive great benefit from using these techniques, and undoubtedly many will. As for myself, I just received my copy yesterday and may post something in the future as to my own experience(s) with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book beyond compare!
Easily one of the best self-help books of this century, it presents the transcendental meditation techniques in a simple and understandable manner and outlines the INNUMERABLE BENEFITS(like health,wealth,creativity,problem-solving etc.) we can reap throughMetaphysics, that too, very QUICKLY.Your life will not be the sameafterreading and practising the easy-to-follow techniques in this book.It givesyou CONFIDENCE in place of dejection,SELF-ESTEEM in place ofdiffidence,STRENGTH in place of weakness, ENTHUSIASM in place of lassitudeand much, much more.It is no wonder that the author is one of the mostrespected and acclaimed masters in the field. Mr. Norvell's narrations ofthe several case-histories are also delightful and wholly absorbingreading.

It is however, saddening to note that almost all his books havebecome out-of-print. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb book, superbly translated
NOTE: This review refers to ISBN 1-58243-103-5.This is a reprint edition of the original Heritage Press publication, in 1949, of M.F.K. Fisher's translation of Brillat-Savarin.As issued, the book is simply titled "The Physiology of Taste, or, Meditations on Transcendental Gastronomy."

Now, with those details out of the way, let me make bold to say that this is one of the world's great books!

When I first began reading it, I became annoyed: "Who is this Frenchman, who thinks he can write about, and tell me about, everything under the sun?"For the book contains many, many digressions.I have seen it referred to as a "cookbook," which is wildly wrong -- it is MEANT to be a book about food and the art of cooking food. And no less about the art of eating food.

But the many digressions are the key to this wonderful book.

A brief biography: born in 1755, trained as a lawyer, Brillat-Savarin became the mayor of his home town, Belley. But he fled France at the time of the Revolution, and went to America. After his brief exile, he returned to Paris and served as a judge in the court of appeals. He spent the last twenty-five years of his life living peacefully, and writing this book.

Did he know that he was creating a masterpiece?Interesting question!

As his intrepid translator, M.F.K. Fisher comments, this seems to be a book which will last more than a century or two.It may well live for thousands of years.

WHY?

Because of the personality and intelligence of the author!Just like Fisher, I wish that I had been one of his friends! And, when push comes to shove, one purpose of a library is to provide an army of friends, hopefully intelligent, gentle, serene, and perceptive.Brillat-Savarin is all of these.

One sample discussion that I can recall from memory is about the ability of various men to enjoy tasty food. And Brillat-Savarin puts his point simply and unforgettably: there are men born blind, and men born lame, and men born deaf.On the other hand, there are men born with sight, men born with normal mobility, and men who can hear.In the same way, some men are born with an inability to appreciate delicious food, due to a lack of taste-buds on the tongue or whatever, BUT there are men who are born loving tasty food -- and I am writing my book by and about these people! :-)

Be careful about buying this book!It may wind up on your nightstand for a long, long, time.Fine wine indeed, from a truly vintage mind -- and a truly fine translator.

Also beware: it may make you hungry! :-)

Book Description
The ebooks in our Cults series compares the teaching of various major religious groups with basic fundamental Biblical doctrine. They are not designed to ridicule or scorn the teaching of those who differ in their faith and doctrine, but to examine the teaching of groups who claim to either hold to orthodox Biblical Christian doctrine or who claim that their movements accommodate Biblical Christianity. Available material was researched and leading people interviewed, where possible. The conclusions drawn in this ebook about Transcendental Meditation are based on information made available and every effort has been made to present the material as accurately as possible. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Quite superficial. It seems that the perspective this book takes is based more on fears and suspicions than on real knowledge of the subject. There isn't enough responsible, reasonable thought in this book.

OK, Being the poor married man that I am (Wife is from another country, so immigration fees are killing me), I decided to try and learn how to do Transcendental Meditation on my own. I ordered this book because it states that it tells you how to do it step-by-step. This is false. Let me tell you what this book has in it: Gossip. Conversations with this Patricia Drake Hemmingway lady between her and her supposed friends about doing TM and who else they know who is doing TM. Stories about how her and her friends traveled to the TM courses/lectures. The conversations that took place with her and her friends after she got back from the TM courses/lectures. (Not about what they learned while there.) And about 10 chapters on how TM has helped people deal with work stress. - This book is basically a poorly written ad for TM. (Which by the way, has gone up from the 1970's price of about $125, to the new 2007 pricetag of $2,500, base price. So apparently only the rich have stress.) I also think that this Patricia lady likes to hear herself talk, and this book is the fix that gets her going. L A M E. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very inspiring
Charles Alexander's book, Self Recovery is particulary helpful because it includes many different experiences with recovering from drug abuse. In some, the recovery is simple and immediate with beginning the regular practice of TM.He also gives examples of more difficult cases where recovery is interruptedand regained several times before self recovery is achieved. The study imvolving alcoholics living on the street wasespecially important as it showed that by adding a stress management strategy to a traditional treatment program, some actual progress was made where progress is not usually seen.

That there is a stress management technique effective enough to break the grip of drug addiction is exciting. That it issometimes challenging to keep people on the program is realistic. That it is sometimes incredibly easy and immediate is corroberated in the prioneering work on TM that Dr. Herbert Benson and Dr. Keith Wallace did at Harvard in the early 70's. It is described in Benson's book, The Relaxation Response.

Dr. Alexander's book is timely. The only real way to win the war on drugs is to reduce the demand for drugs.TM is a useful tool in establing self sufficiency, clear thinking and success in life. ... Read more
