Chapters: Daniel Kumler Flickinger, Samuel Hiestand, Milton Wright, Alfred Taylor Howard, Christian Newcomer, Philip William Otterbein, Martin Boehm, Andrew Zeller, Jacob John Glossbrenner, Brian Magnus. Excerpt:Part of a series on Protestant missions to Africa Alfred Taylor Howard (born 12 March 1868) was a Bishop of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ , elected in 1913. Birth and Family Alfred was born in the rural community of Pleasant Valley, Prairie Ronde Township , near the town of Schoolcraft , Kalamazoo County, Michigan . His is the story of a farm boy who responded to the call of the far horizon to become a world citizen and a Christian witness to the uttermost part of the earth. The Pleasant Valley neighborhood, though a tiny dot on the map, was in fact singularly cosmopolitan. Early settlers had come from many eastern States, and some directly from England , Holland and Germany . This diversity may have placed in this boy's mind the idea of the bigness of the world. Alfred was the son of Cornelius Howard, who was born in Michigan in 1841. His mother was Harriett Guilford. Alfred's paternal grandfather was of English lineage, arriving in Michigan from White Plains, New York . His paternal grandmother was Margaret Osterhut of Dutch descent. Cornelius was deeply involved and powerfully loyal to the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. He was a frequent lay member to the St. Joseph Annual Conference, twice to the General Conference, and served for ten years as a Trustee of Otterbein College . Harriett Howard was likewise devoted, if unobtrusive in her religious expression. As a boy Alfred was uplifted by the sound of his mother's voice raised in prayer as she went about her housework. Boyhood and Early Education Alfred's favorite reading in boyhood was the Youth's Com... ... Read more

Excerpt: Christianity Protestantism Anabaptism Radical Pietism Radical Reformation The Church of the Brethren is a Christian denomination originating from the Schwarzenau Brethren (German: or "Schwarzenau New Baptists") organized in 1708 by eight persons led by Alexander Mack, in Schwarzenau, Bad Berleburg, Germany. The Brethren movement began as a melding of Radical Pietist and Anabaptist ideas during the Protestant Reformation. The first of its churches in the United States was established in 1723. These church bodies became commonly known as Dunkers and more formally as German Baptist Brethren. The denomination holds the New Testament as its only creed. Historically the church has taken a strong stance for non-resistance or pacifism. Distinctive practices include believers baptism by trine immersion; a threefold love feast consisting of feet washing, a fellowship meal, and communion; anointing for healing; and the holy kiss. The Church of the Brethren represents the largest body descending from Mack's Schwarzenau Brethren church. The German Baptist Brethren suffered a major division in the early 1880s, creating the three wings: traditionalists such as the Old German Baptist Brethren, progressives lead by The Brethren Church, and the original majority known as conservatives later adopting the name "Church of the Brethren" in 1908. The latter body had 124,408 members as of June 2009 and 1,035 congregations in the United Stat...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=82193 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Church of the United Brethren in Christ is an evangelical Christian denomination based in Huntington, Indiana. It is a Protestant denomination of episcopal structure, Arminian theology, with roots in the Mennonite and German Reformed communities of 18th century Pennsylvania, as well as close ties to Methodism. It was founded by Martin Boehm and is the first American denomination that was not transplanted from Europe. In 1889, a controversy over membership in secret societies, such as the Freemasons, the proper way to modify the church's constitution, and other issues split the United Brethren into majority liberal and minority conservative blocs, the latter of which was led by Bishop Milton Wright (father of the Wright Brothers). The majority faction merged with the Evangelical Church in 1946 to form a new denomination known as the Evangelical United Brethren Church (EUB). This in turn merged in 1968 with The Methodist Church to form the United Methodist Church (UMC). The Wright-led faction (The Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Old Constitution) continues today as a denomination of about 550 congregations, with 47,300 members in fifteen countries. The US National Conference consists of about 200 churches and 25,000 members in the United States, plus mission districts in Haiti and India. The United States national office, known as Healthy Ministry Resources, is located in Huntington, Indiana, as is the denomination's only college, Huntington University and its Graduate School of Christian Ministries. Martin Boehm.Though not organized until 1800, the roots of the church reach back to 1767. In May of that year, a Great Meeting (part of the interdenominational revival movement known as the "Great Awakening") was held at a barn belongi... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=414081 ... Chapters: Bishops of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Daniel Kumler Flickinger, Samuel Hiestand, Milton Wright, Alfred Taylor Howard, Christian Newcomer, Philip William Otterbein, Martin Boehm, Andrew Zeller, Jacob John Glossbrenner, Brian Magnus. Excerpt: BackgroundChristianityProtestantismMissions timelineChristianity in Africa Daniel Kumler Flickinger (25 May 1824 1911) was an American Bishop of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, elected in 1885. He was the twenty-fifth Bishop of this Christian denomination, and the first elected to the office of Missionary Bishop. Bishop Flickinger was born 25 May 1824 near the village of Seven Mile, Butler County, Ohio, the sixth of the fourteen children born to Jacob and Hannah (Kumler) Flickinger. Jacob's ancestors were Swiss Mennonites. Hannah was the daughter of Henry Kumler Sr, a Bishop and influential leader in the early years of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. Henry's son Henry Kumler Jr likewise was elected Bishop. Bishop Flickinger was therefore a grandson and a nephew of U.B. Bishops. His mother, Hannah, was the daughter, sister and mother of U.B. Bishops. Flickinger's parents were married in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, there establishing their first home. In 1818 they moved to Ohio. The next year Hannah's parents followed, there too establishing their home in Butler County. Jacob became a prosperous farmer and a zealous local preacher in the Miami Annual Conference of the U.B. Church. As was true of many of the pioneers of that day, he believed in hard work and rigid economy. He was also known for his deep-seated prejudice against higher education, also not unusual in that day. The itinerating pioneer preachers always found a welcome in the Flickinger home. There ...
