Excerpt:Amish Mennonites are a Christian church or constituency of Anabaptist heritage, that came into existence as a result of a division which took place in the Mennonite churches of Southern Germany, Eastern France and Switzerland in the late 17th century. Early Amish Mennonite conferences From 1862-1878, annual conferences were held among the Amish. The conferences produced a number of polarized groups, from which came two primary divisions: the Old Order Amish and the Amish Mennonites. The Amish Mennonites formed regional conferences in the late 1880s after the division. During the early 1900s, most of these original Amish Mennonite groups merged with regional Mennonite conferences. Kauffman Amish Mennonite The Kauffman Amish Mennonite constituency, also known as the "Sleeping Preacher" churches, have distinct differences that separate them from the general Amish Mennonite experience and history. This group adheres to the teaching of John Kauffman, an Old Order Amish minister who was known for preaching while sleeping or in a trance. This peculiar practice gained a following, but was rejected by the broader Old Order Amish constituency. He started his own congregation with his followers. Today, there are 16 congregations with 1,509 members, according to the 2006 Anabaptist (Mennonite) Directory. Most congregations are in the Midwest, including Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois. One of the founders of the Church of the United Brethren inChrist, Philip William Otterbein was a German Reformed pastor anditinerant evangelist. He was born on June 3, 1726 in Dillenburg,Germany. After attending the Reformed Seminary at Herborn, heemigrated to Pennsylvania in 1752 as a missionary to the Germansettlers, where he led several congregations before he was called tobe pastor of the Second Evangelical Reformed Church in Baltimore, Md.,in 1774. Throughout his ministry he traveled as an evangelist inPennsylvania and Maryland. A friend of the Methodist Francis Asbury,he also worked closely with Martin Boehm, with whom he drew togetherthe United Brethren. Otterbein and Boehm were elected the firstbishops of the church, which later became the Evangelical UnitedBrethren (EUB) Church, following the merger of the Church of theUnited Brethren in Christ and the Evangelical Association. Thisdenomination later merged with the Methodist Church to become the United Methodist Church. Otterbein died November 17, 1813. In addition to Otterbein UMC, Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio is also named after him. ... Read more
