Excerpt: The Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ is the regional body of the United Church of Christ within the states of Alabama, northwestern Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee (except the city of Memphis). Headquartered in Atlanta, the conference's executive (Conference Minister) is the Rev. Dr. Timothy C. Downs. This conference bears the strong heritages of several missionary efforts, dating back to the postbellum period of the late 19th century, although one church was founded as early as 1681. At least half of the cumulative membership of the Conference's churches is African-American, reflecting the mission work of the American Missionary Association, as well as more recent church planting targeting that constituency. Although historically a mission territory and among the smaller conferences in the denomination, the Southeast Conference is beginning to see signs of growth, encouraged by an aggressive campaign to instigate new congregations and an increasing emphasis on peace and justice witness programs. In addition to the conference minister, several associate conference ministers implement programming to provide educational, youth, and evangelistic ministries for the churches. The Conference holds its annual meeting every June, and is governed by a board of di...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4570295 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Church of the Covenant (a merger of Central Congregational Church and First Presbyterian Church) is a Boston, Massachusetts, landmark, built in 1865-1867 by the Central Congregational Church and now affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the United Church of Christ. Built of Roxbury puddingstone in Gothic Revival style it was one of the first churches to relocate in the new Back Bay and was built largely with funds donated by Benjamin E. Bates, an industrialist who founded Bates College. Designed by Richard M. Upjohn, the son and partner of Richard Upjohn, who insisted on "a high gothic edifice ... which no ordinary dwelling house would overtop." It has a 240-foot (73 m) high steeple, that overtops the Bunker Hill Monument. Oliver Wendell Holmes said: "We have one steeple in Boston that to my eyes seems absolutely perfect--that of the Central Church on the corner of Newbury and Berkeley Streets." In the 1890s the sanctuary was redecorated by Tiffany Glass and Decorating Co. with stained-glass windows and mosaics and an electric-light chandelier designed by Tiffany's Jacob Adolphus Holzer for the World's Columbian Exhibition, Chicago, 1893. The Church of the Covenant is located at 67 Newbury Street. It was known as the "Central Church" until 1932 when the Central Congregational Church merged with the First Presbyterian Church of Boston ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12024592 ... Read more

Excerpt:Classification: Protestant The Bible Methodist Connection of Churches was organized in 1968 as a secession group from the merger of the Wesleyan Methodist Church and the Pilgrim Holiness Church . Church government The connection has 3 conferences; the Heartland Conference (formerly the Ohio Conference), Alabama Conference, and Great Lakes Conference. A conference assembly is held yearly with a general conference assembly that meets every 4th year to shape church doctrine and polity. Doctrine The Bible Methodist Connection of Churches posits that the "doctrine and purpose of the Bible Methodist Church is to proclaim scriptural holiness." It is their view that "God's people should be a holy people, having an impact on their world through Godly lives, enabled by the power of daily Spirit-filled living, that brings total victory and deliverance." History On June 6, 1967, representatives of twenty-eight congregations of the Wesleyan Methodist Church met at Camp Eden, Alabama, to organize themselves into The Bible Methodist Connection of Churches. The reasons for the Bible Methodist secession parallel in many respects those of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in their secession from the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1843. Several issues which were crucial in the formation of Bible Methodism clearly emerge from this period: 1) the que... ... Read more

Excerpt: Plymouth Church of Shaker Heights is a church located in Shaker Heights, Ohio, USA. It is a member of the United Church of Christ. The Senior Minister is Rev. Dr. Shawnthea Monroe. The church building, dedicated in 1923, has been designated a landmark by the Shaker Heights Landmarks Commission. The church traces its origins to the Free Presbyterian Church, formed in 1850 by members of the First Presbyterian Church (Old Stone Church) who objected to that church's moderate stand on slavery. It associated with the Congregational Church two years later, and on August 17, 1852 took the name Plymouth Congregational Church at the suggestion of the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. During the 19th Century, the church had various locations in Cleveland, including Euclid Avenue and East 9th Street (1853), Prospect Avenue near East 9th Street (1857), and Prospect Avenue and East 22nd Street (1882). In 1864, Mt. Zion Congregational Church was formed at Plymouth Church. Under the leadership of the Rev. Charles Terry Collins, Plymouth also formed Olivet Mission to work as an outreach in the Czech community. The Plymouth Church congregation disbanded in 1913 due to a loss of members and a lack of money. The planning of Shaker Heights by the Van Sweringen Brothers provided for land for five churches. To provide one of the churches, Plymouth Church was reconstituted in 1916 with the aid of the Congregational Union as a Congregational Community Church. Worship began in Shaker Heights on September 3, 1916 using a temporary chapel, and soon thereafter planning began for a permanent building. The cornerstone for the present church was laid on June 27, 1920, and worship began in the sanctuary on F...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15899343 ... Read more
