Product Description
The Church on Castle Hill was built in 1695 and continues to the present time. This book outlines the story of the church from its earliest times to the present. Significant amongst many able ministers was the Red Dr Philip Doddridge who ministered at Castle Hill from 1729-1751. Doddridge was an immensely important figure in the early part of the 18th century. His influence was felt in many ways: his hymnn writing which includes "O happy day!", "Hark the Glad Sound", "O God of Bethel" helped to change worship across many denominations; his work in health brought about the foundation of Northampton General Hospital (then the Infirmary) and his publications greatly assisted in the acceptance of innoculation against the great scourge of smallpox. His shorthand system developed with his students at the Northampton Academy influenced Isaac Pitman.Doddridge crossed the barriers of denomination and was generations ahead of his time. "The Castle Hill Church" continues that great tradition and this short history, well illustrated and written, is an enjoyable and instructive read. ... Read more

Product Description
Rejoice and Sing is a completely new collection of hymns and songs for the United Reformed Church. It is the first major hymnbook to draw together the three traditions within the URC and as such represents a significant landmark in the history of the denomination. The editors and compilers have aimed to offer a worship tool or use by today's Church. The material included ranges from the traditional and familiar to those pieces with a more contemporary feel.In addition to hymns and psalms Rejoice and Sing contains a number of liturgical items, including responses and prayers for congregational use. Although intended primarily to reflect the distinctive character of the URC, Rejoice and Sing is also offered to Christians in wider ecumenical circles as an important new resource for sung worship. ... Product Description
This volume contains the church records that were kept by the pastors. Marriage records begin in 1852. Baptism records begin with one baptism recorded in 1828, one in 1832, and by 1833 the records appear to be more complete. Death records begin in September 1862. It is possible that records were kept before these dates, but they are not to be found in the church. The last records found in specific record books end in 1993, with the pastorate of Don Stevenson. The book begins with a list of pastors of the Waynesboro Congregation from 1818-2003. The records are presented in chronological order and the entire work is fully indexed. Marriage records include date of marriage, name of reverend and names of groom and bride. Brides are listed by maiden name in the index. Baptism records give name of reverend, name of child, birth date, baptism date, and names of parents. Death records contain name of recording reverend, name of deceased, date of decease, and remarks. The remarks usually give the persons' age and sometimes the cause of death. Between 1920 and 1945, the deceased's date of birth was often included. ... Read more

The Reformed Church has often been called "the church of the martyrs." It certainly deserves this honorable title, for no other denomination of Christians has had so many members who have sealed their faith with their blood. Its history abounds with examples of the most sublime heroism; and its continued existence, notwithstanding all the persecutions which it has endured, is an evident proof of its divine mission. The trials of the Reformed Church were, in great degree, owing to its geographical location. In Switzerland it was, almost from the beginning, strong enough to defend itself; and in Germany, though always in the minority, it was to some extent protected by the terms of the treaty of Augsburg; but its members were widely scattered through countries in which Roman Catholics held the reins of power, and they were therefore peculiarly exposed to the wrath of their enemies. In Italy, Spain, France, Holland, and other countries, the martyrs of the Reformed Church may perhaps be numbered by hundreds of thousands. The names of most of these patient sufferers are now forgotten. They disappeared in the dungeons of theInquisition, and their friends hardly ventured to ask a question concerning their fate. It is enough for us to know that they were faithful unto death, and that their Saviour knows them all.THE WALDENSES.The Swiss Reformers had at an early date crossed the Alps for the purpose of preaching the Gospel in Italy. Here they were warmly seconded by a community of peasants, who, in the secluded valleys of Piedmont, had for ages cherished a faith very similar to their own. These people were known as the Waldenses, a name which simply signifies "the... ... Read more
