Ova sinteza bazira se na takozvanoj Dils-Alderovoj reakciji koja se danas primenjuje u proizvodnji sintetièke gume kao i u proizvodnji razlièitih plastiènih masa. Ona se takoðe koristi u proizvodnji lekova, insekticida, boja kao i mnogih drugih proizvoda. Kurt Alder je posle zavr¹enih studija hemije na Univerzitetima u Berlinu i Kilu, doktorirao 1926. godine. Bio je profesor hemije na Univerzitetu u Kilu (1934-1936), a od 1940. godine na Univerzitetu u Kelnu, na kome je bio i direktor Instituta za hemiju. Od 1936. do 1940. godine radio je u istra¾ivaèkom odeljenju firme I. G. Farben u Leverkuzenu, u to vreme najveæem hemijskom koncernu u svetu. Tu je svoja fundamentalna istra¾ivanja primenio za razvoj procesa proizvodnje polimernih materijala. Umro je u Kelnu 1958. godine.

Extractions: Kurt Alder wurde am 10. Juli 1902 in Königshütte in Oberschlesien geboren. Seine Jugend wurde vor allem durch das industrielle umfeld seiner Heimat geprägt. 1922 legte er noch das Abitur in Oberschlesien ab. Danach verließ wegen der politischen Umstände die ganze Familie ihre Heimat und zog nach Kiel. Dort setzte er sein Chemiestudium fort, nachdem er züivor ein Semester in Berlin studiert hatte. 1924 legte er sein Examen ab und erhielt für seine Doktorarbeit von Otto Diels, dem damaligen Chef des chemischen Institutes in Kiel, das Thema: "Über die Ursache und Verlauf der Azoester-Reaktion". Alder untersuchte die Anlagerung des Azodicarbonsäurediethylester, so nennt man die Verbindung heute, an ungesättigte Kohlenwasserstoffe unter Ausbildung von Sechsringen. Dies war ein Beispiel für einen Reaktionstyp, dessen Universalität zu erkennen das große Verdienst von Alder und seinem Lehrer Diels war. Diese Reaktion trägt heute beider Namen und heißt "Diel-Alder-Reaktion". 1926 promovierte er in Kiel. Die folgenden Jahre waren für die Forschungsarbeit wegen fehlender finanzieller Mittel sehr schwierig. Aber man arbeitete weiter und vervollständigte die Dien-Synthese. Die Arbeit mit ungesättigten Systemen und deren Veränderungen machten es möglich, dass neue Stoffe entstanden, wie sie heute als Kunststoffe verwendet werden. Aber man konnte auch synthetischen Kautschuk erzeugen und auf der Grundlage dieser Erkenntnisse wurden auch Insektizide hergestellt.
