People from many professions are involved in the study of the Universe. Scientists, engineers, computer programmers, educators, astronauts, technicians, office workers, writers, and administrators all make important contributions. Amateur Astronomy Astronomy is a field in which anyone can participate and even make useful discoveries! Amateur astronomers, often using only a pair of good binoculars, have discovered numerous comets. By using more powerful telescopes, amateur astronomers have discovered novae and supernovae. Many people build their own telescopes and observatories to study and photograph objects in the universe. Astrophotography has become a very popular and enjoyable hobby. Also, anyone with a computer can now participate in SETI's search for life in the universe . So far about two million people have participated. Our club is open to the public to people with an interest and desire to learn more about astronomy. Our membership ranges from junior high school students to senior citizens. We hold a general meeting on the Second Monday of each Month at 8 PM in the Cleveland Metroparks' Rocky River Nature Center, located 1/4-mile north of Cedar Point Road on the Valley Parkway in North Olmsted, Ohio. Information on monthly meetings, scheduled talks and current events can be found in the CAA newsletter, The Observer Public Programs and Star Parties are open to the general public and are usually held at at one of three sites in the Cleveland Metroparks, Brecksville Road, Bradley Woods or Lewis Road. Programs in Medina County are usually held at Letha House Park. Private Star Parties are open to CAA members and their guests. These observing sessions are usually held at Medina County's Letha House Park. We are in the process of building our observatory at the Letha House site in Spencer, Ohio. The observatory should be complete before the end of Summer 2000.

Extractions: Simon Newcomb (pictured at left) was born in Wallace, Nova Scotia in 1835, and came to the United States in 1853. He met Joseph Henry who encouraged him to study mathematics and astronomy. In January of 1857, Newcomb became a mathematician in the Nautical Almanac Office at Harvard University. On September 21st, 1861, he was commissioned Professor of Mathematics in the United States Navy, in which he served for 36 years, until 1897. He retired as a Captain. During his service, he won great renown as a mathematician and an astronomer. In 1906, Newcomb was promoted to Rear Admiral. He died in Washington on July 11th, l909. He served as President of the American Society for Psychical Research, President of the American Mathematical Society, President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, President of the Philosophical Society of Washington, and was the first President of the American Astronomical Society.
