Prerequisite: courses in ecology, chemistry, and physics. Meets June 22-July 18, 2003. Ruttner's classic book, Fundamentals of Limnology , serves as the basic text material for the course. Copies of this out-of-print book will be available at the Laboratory for student use. In addition, we will be reading out of other works that will be supplied. The readings and discussions support our fieldwork, consisting of daily class observations and class projects. Results of these projects will be presented orally and in papers. Students should bring chest waders or hip boots and a simple dissection kit.

    Extractions: and Findings Work With Us The Amazon Rivers Program of the Amazon Conservation Association (ACA) focuses on river basin management and conservation biology in the Amazon Basin. Special emphasis is given to the ecology of fish. Fish are the ideal candidates for building awareness of the world's greatest rainforest-river ecosystems - those of the Amazon. Everything about Amazon fish and their interactions with the rainforest is impressive. Aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are inextricably bound. Many fish depend on fruits and seeds from flooded forests, unique habitats that support tremendous biodiversity, yet remain under serious threat. Migratory fish provide 80% of the protein consumed by people in the Amazon. They depend on intact forests and healthy watersheds, thus making excellent surrogates for overall monitoring and assessment for ecosystem and watershed health. Fish are an important, and often the most important, source of protein for rural and urban peoples of the Amazon. To sustain the fish resource, new approaches to conservation need to be developed that are scientifically based and incorporate the ecological reality of rainforest-river links and long distance migrations. This is one of the main goals of the Amazon Rivers Program.

    Extractions: Aquatic Research Laboratory Limnology and Aquatic Ecology The St. Marys River, and the upper Great Lakes region, affords countless opportunities for limnological and ecological research. The St. Marys River itself is the sole surface water outlet from Lake Superior, and is considered a connecting channel to Lakes Huron and Michigan. The St. Marys River is one of 41 areas of concern identified in the Great Lakes by the International Joint Commission, and one of five which share the international border. Limnological Monitoring of the St. Mary's River We are currently working to re-establish a program of basic water-quality monitoring of the river’s physical, chemical and biological variables. Previous research, under a grant from the USEPA, focused on nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics. Our immediate goals are to incorporate estimates of phytoplankton and zooplankton species composition and biomass into this routine. The goal of this sampling program, in addition to generating basic information on the river system and educational opportunities for our students, is to support ongoing efforts to assess and rehabilitate the St. Marys River Area of Concern throughout the Remedial Action Process. The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program was developed in EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) to monitor status and trends in the condition of the nation's aquatic ecological resources at regional and national scales. The EMAP Western Pilot (Western EMAP) is a five-year effort (1999-2003) by EPA Regions 8, 9, and 10 in partnership with States, Tribes and other parties to advance the science of aquatic ecosystem health monitoring and to demonstrate the applicability and usefulness of EMAP indicators in environmental assessments. Western EMAP is intended to demonstrate the value of monitoring based on a randomized design in the western United States by applying these techniques to assessment questions of regional and state interest. Previous EMAP efforts have revealed that error rates within RF3 can be very high, including errors of inclusion (where digital maps show a stream trace, but no stream actually exists, a common error in arid areas), and errors of exclusion (where more streams exist than are mapped). One of the goals of Western EMAP is to make accurate estimates of these error rates for the western U.S. This is important because RF3 is the common sample frame used by States and EPA's Office of Water to estimate the number of miles of streams in a state.
