Extractions: Cephalopods (Octopi and Squids) Cephalopods are molluscan animals that live in the sea. The group includes the modern octopi and squids as well as many fossil forms. The name cephalopod means "head foot" and it looks as though its feet (actually tentacles) are growing out of its head. The soft parts of the cephalopod animals are not fossilized, but the shell fossils are common in some strata. The inside of the fossil cephalopod shells are very similar to the internal parts of the modern Nautilus , a squid-like animal with a coiled shell. Because the shell structure is similar, we infer that the fossil cephalopods animals were similar to Nautilus when they were alive. For more information, contact Don Chesnut

Extractions: The class cephalopoda, in the phylum Mollusca, includes octopus, squid, cuttlefish and the rare nautilus. The word cephalopod literally means head-foot. As a class in the phylum Mollusca, cephalopods are also related to gastropods (snails) and bivalves (clams, mussels). Although cephalopods are in the same class, they look remarkably different from each other. However, all cephalopods do share several characteristics. All cephalopods have sucker-bearing arms around the front of their heads squid and octopus have eight while cuttlefish and nautilus have more. Additionally, squid and cuttlefish have two long tentacles used for grabbing prey. Cephalopods have highly developed eyes, large brains and a sac from which they discharge a black mucus-bound ink. Ink is used for defense and disguise. The ink obscures the cephalopod and can irritate the eyes of the predator, which allows the cephalopod time to escape. All cephalopods move by expelling water from a siphon under the head. Octopods also use their arms to crawl.

Extractions: Fossil cephalopods are extinct ancestors of today's squid, octopus, and chambered nautilus. Following is a series of pictures involving my reconstruction of a highly fragmentary cephalopod, probably an Endoceras. I did this strictly for personal reward certainly not for profit (paleontology isn't a booming field). I realize this is highly eccentric, but people did this kind of stuff before the days of the internet, television, and radio. A friend of mine and I discovered it in abandoned quarry in Goodhue County in October 1998. It wasn't an accident we were looking for fossils in this region. The quarry sat at the edge of a farm field, and was excavated to a level a few meters below the surface soil and glacial till. The fossil was found on the "shelf" near the center of the photograph below, the top of a Platteville limestone formation. The hill sloping to the right is glacial till and topsoil, currently being farmed. The picture to the right is the surface of this exposure, cephalopod parts of several other individuals were present in the vicinity. This served as the cephalopod's home and graveyard for approximately 450 million years:

Extractions: Ancient Life in Kansas Rocks, part 16 of 27 Baculites , the straight form in the center and upper left, and Scaphites , the coiled forms, are fossils related to present day squids and Nautilus . As such, they belong to the group of mollusks called cephalopods, and were very highly specialized, possible even having an image-forming eye like us. They inhabit deep water and swam about freely by means of a form of jet propulsion, although Baculites probably was more adapted to life in the sea bottom. They were predatory, living on other animals such as crabs and shellfish. The specimen of Scaphites at the lower left is a smaller species than that in the upper right and has nearly reached maturity. When the scaphitids were fully developed, the living chamber , out of which protruded a squidlike head and tentacles, opened toward the coil at the other end. Baculites ranged up to several feet in size, whereas Scaphites generally grew only to six or eight inches. These specimens of Baculites are only fragments of the entire long,tapering, slightly flattened shell, and the specimen at the upper left displays the intricate feathery pattern (artifically darkened for visibility) marking the line where the inner
