It is estimated that five to seven million hectares of arable land an area equivalent to Tunisias agricultural land are lost every year in the world because of deterioration, and 4.8 million hectares are threatened by desertification. The seriousness of the problem has aroused the interest of the international community. The United Nations Convention to combat Desertification was adopted in 1994. Tunisia played an active role during the preparatory works of the convention, and as one of the first countries to ratify it, has worked hard to implement the measures it contains. A national action plan was drawn up and a national fund has been created, taking into account the needs of sustainable forms of development

Poison Zakaliya, a father of eight, is also taking care of six orphaned grandchildren. He has three acres of land on which he grows crops to provide for his large family. Having used this piece of land for years, the soil has now lost its fertility and he cannot reap as much as he used to in the past. Therefore, Zakaliya chose to encroach into nearby Thyolo Mountain, a forest reserve. Apart from Thyolo Mountain, the Kalulu and Thyolomwani hills have also been heavily encroached and deforested. Little did people like Zakaliya know that their encroaching on the mountains would have far reaching consequences on their lives. The encroached hills are catchment areas from which several rivers in the district originate. With the heavy deforestation that came with people encroaching on the hills, the rivers no longer flow during the dry season because they dry up quickly. The wetlands are no longer the wetlands they used to be. The local communities and their village leaders are asking government through their Members of Parliament to drill more boreholes in the district because most of the rivers they relied upon for their day to day water supply have run dry. Zakaliya says most perennial rivers do not flow throughout the dry season as they used to. He does not know why this is so. All he can remember is that in his youth days this was not the case.

Avec limportante déforestation provoquée par les envahissements, les fleuves ne coulent plus durant la saison sèche, ils tarissent rapidement. Les zones humides ne sont plus ce quelles étaient. Les communautés locales et leurs leaders demandent au gouvernement par le biais de leurs représentants au parlement de forer beaucoup plus de puits dans le district puisque la plupart des fleuves dont ils dépendaient pour leurs approvisionnements en eau quotidiens sétaient asséchés.

Land degradation means the reduction, or loss, in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas, of the biological or economic productivity and complexity of rainfed cropland, irrigated cropland or range, pasture, forest and woodlands, resulting from land uses or from a process or combination of processes, including processes arising from human activities and habitation patterns. Climatic factors include periods of temporary but severe drought and long-term climatic changes toward aridity. Human factors include the artificial alteration of the climate, such as degradation of the biological environment, which can be caused by removing vegetation (which can lead to unnaturally high erosion), excessive cultivation, and the exhaustion of surface-water or groundwater supplies for irrigation, industry, or domestic use. Desertification drains a land of its life-supporting capabilities. A declining groundwater table, increasing erosion, and the disappearance of native vegetation characterise the process. Areas undergoing desertification may show all of these symptoms, but the existence of only one usually provides sufficient evidence that the process is taking place. Desertification typically begins in areas made susceptible by drought or overuse by human populations.

Harvesting facai grass with large rakes, each person harvesting about one-third of a hectare per day destroys the grasslands. Scattered Mongol herder families are no match for the facai grass harvesting gangs, usually of the Hui minority, who move in groups of twenty people. Facai grass is valuable, said the official, only because the name facai is a homonym for get rich. Facai grass has no special nutritional value and is not used in either Western or traditional Chinese medicine. Ethnic Chinese of South Asia, as well as the relatively well-off Chinese of the south China coast, like to present facai to guests with their meals because of the auspicious name of the grass, said the official. Much of the facai grass stripped from the Inner Mongolian grasslands is exported through the big facai markets of Tongxin County [Standard Telegraphic Code: 0681 1800] (37 N. Lat, 106 E. Long) in the Ningxia-Hui Autonomous Region.

Improper soil and water management cause local ecosystems to become desert-like, unproductive and unable to sustain what was normal plant and animal life. Desertification is not limited to developing countries but also affects Australia, Spain, Canada, Turkey, and the United States. Nearly 90% of North American arid lands are moderately or severely desertified. Desertification threatens one third of the the world's land and 850 million people.
