(Yes, I am a name dropper, aren't I?) A few kilometers from my home lives Dolly, the world's first mammalian clone; not counting identical twins. (They're clones too.) What makes Dolly different from identical twins is that she was grown from a cell taken from an ADULT animal! Many bright, well-respected scientists said it couldn't be done. Dr Ian Wilmut, who is in charge of the lab that created Dolly, admits that he had his doubts. However the hard work and imaginative thinking of his staff made it all possible. How did they do it and what did they do? First some background to teach you the basics of developmental biology An oocyte (pronounced "oh-oh-sight") is an unfertilized egg and it has no chance of developing into an animal unless it's fertilized. A recently fertilized egg is called a zygote (pronounced "zye-goat"). Funny how the last two letters in the alphabet describe the first stage of an individual animal. For example, a frog zygote normally divides and grows into a complete animal, a tadpole. Later that tadpole will develop into an adult frog.

Extractions: Novel Copper Containing Biomaterial Discovered in Jaws of Bloodworm MCDB Professor Herbert Waite and coworkers reported in the October 11 issue of Science on a marine organism that uses a unique copper-containing structure with unusual material properties. They found that the jaws of the marine bloodworm Glycera dibranchiata contain the copper-based biomineral atacamite [Cu 2 (OH)3 Cl ] that is bound to a histidine rich protein matrix. This discovery is remarkable because the amount of copper present would normally be toxic. The authors comment, "The marriage of protein with copper mineral as well as with bound copper ions is an intriguing concept per se but may also serve as a design prototype for new materials that need to be hard, lightweight, and durable." Fisher has been awarded the prestigious "2002 Ludwig Von Sallmann Prize for Outstanding Contributions to Vision and Ophthalmology". The program is supervised by approximately thirty faculty members working in six areas: Students whose interests overlap two or more of these areas are encouraged to develop a special program of study for themselves. In addition, students may develop programs of study in conjunction with other University departments such as Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Chemistry, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, or with other schools within the University such as the School of Medicine.
