The plates may be solidly fused together, as in sea urchins , loosely articulated to facilitate movement, as in sea stars (starfish), or reduced to minute spicules in the skin, as in sea cucumbers . The skin usually has warty projections or spines, or both. Echinoderms display pentamerous radial symmetry, that is, the body can be divided into five more or less similar portions around a central axis. Unlike other radially symmetrical animals, they develop from a bilaterally symmetrical larva and retain some degree of bilateral symmetry as adults. There is no head; the surface containing the mouth (the underside, in sea stars and most others) is called the oral surface, and the opposite side, which usually bears the anus, the aboral surface. There are five living classes of echinoderms.

Extractions: Echinoderms are an exclusively marine group! They include such organisms as: seastars, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and sand dollars. "Echino" means "spiny", and "derm" means "skin" - so these are the spiny-skinned animals. If you pick up a sea urchin, the reason for this name quickly becomes apparent! All echinoderms have a 5-point radial symmetry. The skeleton is composed of spiny, calcareous ossicles, and is found under the skin - so echinoderms have an "endoskeleton" just like us! A special water vascular system circulates throughout the Cross-section through a seastar arm. animal. This system is important for many body functions, such as respiration, digestion, circulation and locomotion. Echinoderms all have "tube feet" which are used for attachment and motion. The feet do not have any muscles, and instead are controlled by hydraulics. Seastars have the amazing ability to shed arms to escape from predators and then to regenerate them later on. Seastars also have small claws called pedicellaria that cover their surface and prevent settlement of other organisms. This phylum dates back to the lower Cambrian and represents about 6000 modern species . Modern classes include crinoids sand dollars sea urchins starfish , and Holothurids (Sea Cucumbers). Fossil forms included Blastoids Edrioasteroids and several peculiar Early Cambrian animals such as Helioplacus Carpoids Homalozoa and possibly Machaerids They evolved from bilaterally symmetric creatures. Later forms were lopsided. In development, the first cells organize themselves in a bilaterally symmetric fashion that makes them look like embryonic chordates. Later, the left side of the body grows at the expense of the right side, which is eventually absorbed. The left side then grows in a pentaradially symmetric fashion. All echinoderms exhibit fivefold radial symmetry in portions of their body at some stage of life, even if they have secondary bilateral symmetry. They also have a

Extractions: Lab 8 THE ECHINODERMS Sea stars (starfishes), sea urchins and sand dollars, brittle stars, sea cucumbers, and sea lilies are all members of Phylum Echinoderrnata. This large phylum of marine organisms are well-preserved in the fossil record and represented today by five distinct classes. Many adult echinoderins are easily recognized by their 5-part (pentamerous) radial symmetry. Be aware that their symmetry does not ally the echinoderms with the cnidarians! In cnidarians, radial symmetry is present in each stage of the life cycle. This is called primary radial symmetry . In comparison, the larva of echinoderms are actively swinuning, bilaterally symmetrical animals. The radial symmetry of the adult echinodenns is thought to have been added later in the evolutionary history of this group, as a modification for a slow moving fife on the ocean floor. This type of specialization is called secondary radial symmmetry . Adult symmetry alone, then, is not a good character to use in determining phylogeny of the echinoderms. Interestingly, there is strong embryological evidence that suggests a close evolutionary relationship between the echinoderms and the chordates .
