Extractions: Living the triploblastic life in the round I n a bucket of invertebrates its easy to pick out the Echinoderms by their pentaradiate symmetry. It's one of their most obvious characters and sea stars and sea urchins tests are common souveniers from any visit to an ocean beach. But, like almost all the invertebrate body plans we have studied we have travel back to the Cambrian to see the first echinoderms and what we would find is very different from what we see today. A ncestral echinoderms were attached to the substrate and were suspension feeders, just like the lophophores, and Porifera their neighbours in these ancient oceans. Unlike the Porifera, two groups took advantage of the tripartate coelom to assist with feeding and the mesocoel formed the lophophore in one and in the echnoderms the unique water vascular system with its tube feet . Initially tube feet were ciliated appendages that trapped food, passed to a ciliate groove on the arm where it was propelled to the mouth by cilia lining the ambulacral groove . Echnioderms were protected from predation by their spinny skin and an endoskelton of calcarious ossicles. As sessile filter feeders its not surprising that they were radially symmetric and the only trace of their bilateral heritage is found in the larval stages.

Extractions: Echinoderms are spiny-skinned invertebrates that live on the ocean floor. The word echinoderm means "spiny skin." No echinoderms are found in fresh water. Modern-day echinoderms have five-fold symmetry (they are pentameral), having arms or rays in multiples of five. Some fossil echinoderms did not have five-fold symmetry. Echinoderms are armored animals that have a hard exoskeleton made of interlocking calcium carbonate plates and spines. These slow-moving creatures have a water-vascular system (a rudimentary circulatory system), water-filled channels that go through the body. The oldest-known fossil echinoderm is Arkarua, which lived in pre-Cambrian times, during the Vendian period, roughly 560 million years ago, in what is now Australia. An avid beachgoer may search for sea urchins, brittle stars, or even sea cucumbers. An underwater diver may have the luck of finding a sea lily. These organisms might not look alike but they all belong to the Phylum Echinodermata. Echinodermata is divided into two subphylums: Subphylum Pelmatozoa exclusively includes Class Crinoidea (sea lilies and feather stars). Subphylum Eleutherozoa includes Class Asteroidea (true star fish), Ophiuroida (brittle stars), Concentriclycoidea (sea daisies), Echinoidea (sea urchins and sand dollars), and finally Holothuroidea (sea cucumbers). Generally, echinoderms are pentaradial. In other words they exhibit five-fold symmetry. They have a diffuse nervous system (no brain!) which lets them receive stimuli equally from all directions. Most echinoderms are mobile unlike many of their pentameral peers. An internal water vascular system facilitates movement. The vast majority of echinoderms are bottom dwellers. Observe the pentameral symmetry in Brissidae , a member of Class Echinoidea.
