Extractions: Phone: (614) 292-8209 Insects and related terrestrial arthropods comprise over 80% of the life forms on earth. The Class Insecta alone is suspected of containing between one and five million species at a minimum. Biological studies on most of these are sorely lacking, and very probably fewer than half the extant species have been named and described. Insects, by virtue of their small size and rapid reproductive capability, are major competitors with humans for resources. These same characteristics, together with ease of handling and breeding, make them ideal organisms for the elucidation of basic biological principles. Insects are also extensively involved in the spread of many pathogenic microorganisms that impact plants and animals, including humans. The Department of Entomology at The Ohio State University is the only academic and research center for entomology in the state of Ohio, and exists as a necessary response to the central place occupied by insects in our society. The Department of Zoology and Entomology dates from 1891. The first Ph.D. in Entomology was awarded in 1904; as of Spring Commencement 2002, 418 Ph.D. and 561 M.S. degrees had been granted in Entomology. Close cooperation between entomologists at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster and those on the Columbus campus began in 1947, and the two units thereafter evolved into a single administrative unit. The former Department of Zoology and Entomology became two separate departments within the College of Biological Sciences in 1967. Formal merger of OARDC and The Ohio State University occurred in 1982, though the Department of Entomology has functioned as a unit since its inception.

Extractions: Extension Entomology Specialist What is it about North American culture that keeps us from using one of our most abundant and readily available food sources, insects? We could learn a lot from our international neighbors. Many cultures around the globe have evolved to use insects in their diets. There was probably some trial and error involved because not all insects are edible. In fact, some insects are poisonous. But there are lots of insects that are safely eaten by people around the world. Algeria - The natives of Algeria would collect large numbers of desert locusts to use as food. They were a valuable resource for the poor population. The locusts were cooked in salt water and dried in the sun. Not only were they collected for personal use, but the locusts were traded in the markets as well. Australia - Australian natives, known as Aborigines, have eaten many different insects throughout history. Hundreds of Aborigines would come together at the Bogong mountains to feast on Bogong moths. These moths would gather in large numbers on the cave floors and in rock crevices. They were harvested, cooked in sand and stirred in hot ashes. This would burn off the wings and legs. The moths were then sifted through a net to remove their heads before they were eaten by the Aborigines. Some of the moths were ground into paste and made into cakes.

Extractions: Home Page "Radar entomology" is the technique and science of using radar to study insect movement. It has proved valuable in the study of insect migration, and has been used especially in research on insect pests that are migratory (of which there are many). Radar has also been used to study non-migratory (i.e. foraging) movements. This site endeavours to provide some basic information about radar entomology, a comprehensive address list of everyone working in the field, a comprehensive bibliography, and links to other sites containing information on the technique and its applications. Some historical material has also been included. Radar Entomology - an Introduction describes how radar is used to study insect flight and migration. However, many large insects are not harmful at all. Because it would take several volumes to describe every insect, this publication is intended to distinguish several common insects and insect relatives in Kentucky that are or are not harmful. UK Dept. of Entomology Daddy-long-legs look like long-legged spiders but are actually relatives of spiders. They only have one body section (spiders have two body sections). They do not sting or have venom. Daddy-long-legs feed on plants and sometimes decaying materials in forests. Millipedes cannot hurt people. They do look similar to centipedes (their sometimes dangerous relatives), but with two big differences: millipedes have chewing mouthparts millipedes have two pairs of legs for each body segment (centipedes have only one pair of legs per segment).
