Extractions: Photonic Device Simulation by FEM Photonic devices involve perhaps all equations carrier transport equation (for injection); Maxwell equations (for waveguide and laser cavity); and Heat flow equations (due to heating and thermal management). Microelectronic devices involve semiconductor equations transport equation. Approporiate application of the transport equation to deep submicron device structure is the key of microelectronic device simulation. Transport equations are increasingly moving from Drift-Diffusion equations toward Hydrodynamic equations for deep submicron devices. Application of Maxwell equations to dielectric waveguide (index of refraction profile), to laser diode cavity, etc. is for the photon field part of photonic device.
