Extractions: University of Copenhagen The glaciology section of the department of Geophysics has during 30 years specialized in ice core drilling (mainly on the Greenland Ice Cap) and analysis of the ice. The analyses include physical and chemical measurements as well as computer modelling of the behaviour of the ice. All elements contribute to our understanding of climate conditions back in time. In the period 1989-1993 an ice core was drilled from surface to bedrock at Summit, the heighest point of the ice cap. The result of the European GReenland Ice core Project (GRIP) was an ice core of more than 3000 m length. From this core, we obtained a climate history at least 100.000 years back in time! The ice core also contains information from the last warm period, the Eemian, at 113-125 ka BP. The high summer temperatures in especially July and beginning of August form systems of rivers and lakes at the surface of the Inlandice in the edge zone. The rivers might be quite imposing and almost impossible to cross.

Extractions: Glaciology is the study of ice in the environment. Important components are seasonal snow sea ice glaciers ice sheets and frozen ground . The extent of these types of ice reflects the present and past climate. Examples are: hemispheric snow cover in winter, thickness of sea ice on the polar oceans, depth of frozen ground, volumes of glaciers and the physical and chemical properties in layers cored from ice sheets. The ice also affects climate. For example, the large areas covered by snow and sea ice reflect solar radiation away from the Earth's surface and thereby influence the heat balance of the earth. Because these ice components are only decimeters to meters thick, they can change on time scales as short as seasons and can influence climate at all time scales. Glaciers and ice sheets are hundreds to more than one thousand meters thick and change significantly only on decadal or much longer time scale. On these longer time scales they can influence atmospheric circulation and global sea level. More locally all of these types of ice influence hydrology, geomorphic processes and pose various natural hazards.

Scientists involved in the WAIS program want to know what triggers marine ice sheet collapse and evaluate the possibility that this could happen in West Antarctica. Predicting the ice sheet's future behavior requires an understanding of its history, current state, internal dynamics and coupling to the current global climate. Ice cores from Antarctica are important in order to determine whether the rapid climate changes recorded in Northern Hemisphere ice cores, such as those obtained from Summit, Greenland in the Greenland Ice Sheet Project II (GISP2) , occurred globally. The only area where an ice core capable of providing a long, annual resolution history of Southern Hemisphere climate exists is in the interior of West Antarctica, where compressed snow layers are thick enough to allow absolute dating. The entire continent (with a few exceptional areas such as the McMurdo Dry Valleys and some lakes and mountains) is covered by a "sheet" of ice that has been laid down over eons, if the term sheet can be used to describe a dynamic mass several thousand meters (m) thick, larger than most countries, rising over 2,000 m above sea level (peaking in an ice dome in the east nearly twice that high), and heavy enough to depress the bedrock beneath it some 600 m. Actually there are two sheets - the much larger East Antarctic Ice Sheet that covers the bedrock core of the continent and, beyond the Transantarctic Mountains, the smaller, marine-based West Antarctic Ice Sheet that overlays a group of islands and waters. The Glaciology Program is concerned with the history and dynamics of the antarctic ice sheet; this includes research on near-surface snow and firn, floating glacier ice (ice shelves), glaciers, ice streams, and continental and marine ice sheets. These species of ice facilitate studies on ice dynamics, paleoenvironments (deduced from ice cores), numerical modeling, glacial geology, and remote sensing. Some current program objectives include:

Programmes are now running on remote sensing and meteorological aspects on glaciology. Back to table of contents: Glaciology Glacier hydrology The thickness of a water-saturated layer in firn is governed by the water input into the firn layer at the surface and the drainage of the aquifer along crevasses. We measured meteorological parameters as temperature, global and net radiation, wind speed and precipitation to calculate total water input. The response of the firn aquifer was measured continuously in boreholes by means of pressure transducers connected to dataloggers. The preliminary results show that the firn water table responds to meteorological conditions with a lag of about 3 days. The hydraulic gradient in the firn aquifer inclines towards crevassed areas, which shows the importance of crevasses for the drainage of the firn area. Back to table of contents: Glaciology Antarctica The Antarctic projects are governed by the programmes outlined by the SCAR Global change group GLOCHANT and the European Programme for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA). The GLOCHANT programmes concern present day climate development (ITASE), the mass balance of the continent (ISMASS) and the Quaternary development of the ice sheet (ANTIME). Our efforts in these programmes are focused on firn coring, ice velocity measurements, and on radar soundings to map ice thickness and snow stratigraphy. During the winter of 1997/98 we performed EPICA pre site surveys within the SWEDARP initiative in Dronning Maud Land. Three 100-130 m long ice cores were sampled at two sites, one on the Polar Plateau and one near the coast.
