Extractions: cires.colorado.edu The course has two basic goals: First, to introduce you to conceptual tools which are useful in thinking more effectively and responsibly about any problem of policy; and second, to develop and practice skills using the tools to analyze the various dimensions of global change for the purpose of developing strategies and making recommendations about how to realize a set of preferred policy outcomes in practical settings. To meet these goals, the course focuses on the following activities: core readings and responses, class lectures, in-class discussion, and a semester project related to the focus of the course. Please note that there are no books required to be purchased for this course, all readings are either selected chapters or journal articles that will be placed on reserve in Norlin Library at least one week prior to the relevant class meeting. In some instances outside speakers will suggest or provide materials to be read in advance of their lecture. We have also identified relevant World Wide Web sites that contain useful and relevant information.

Related Stories Next Story Source: American Society For Microbiology Date: WASHINGTON, DC (February 12, 2001) Managing microbial activity can play a significant role in slowing adverse effects of greenhouse gases and other global environmental changes, according to a new report from the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). The report, "Global Environmental Change: Microbial Contributions, Microbial Solutions," points out that the basic chemistry of Earth's surface is determined by biological activity, especially that of the many trillions of microbes in soil and water. Microbes make up the majority of the living biomass on Earth and, as such, have major roles in the recycling of elements vital to life. Since the microbial world can contribute to as well as mitigate global change, its activities are important to understand as a sound basis for policy decisions and regulations.

Extractions: The Environmental Biology Group The Environmental Biology Group studies fundamental aspects of plant physiological responses and adaptations to environmental variation and environmental stresses, including global climate change. Research is focussed on the interactions between biochemical, developmental and genetic attributes in the control of resource acquisition, transpiration, growth and morphogenesis under variable atmospheric and soil conditions, with a special interest in conditions relevant to global climate change or to Australian biota. Long term aims are to identify how plants sense variations in their environments (e.g. changes in atmospheric CO concentration and humidity for stomata; variations in soil strength or nitrogen content for roots), how this information is transmitted and integrated through the plants to produce an observed phenotype, during imposition and release of stress. We see this as one of the most challenging areas in biological research which holds keys to the engineering of plants tailored to specific environments and to an intelligent management of biological diversity in environments of the future. Our research includes a strong theoretical component and integrates across levels of organisation, from the organelle to the whole plant, and in a few instances the canopy, using model plant systems (Tradescantia, tobacco or Arabidopsis (ecotypes, transgenic plants, and mutants) and agricultural or native species (e.g. rice, wheat, cotton, lupin, Acacias, eucalypts).
