Extractions: Marine Mammals by Mike Vlessides Traditionally, few cultures in the world were more dependent on the creatures of the sea than the Inuit. Indeed, in a land where resources were often scarce, the fertile waters of Nunavut and its vast populations of marine mammals provided the raw materials that helped Inuit society thrive in one of the world's harshest climates. Even today, as massive material changes continue to reshape Inuit society, the people of Nunavut use marine mammals as important sources of food, clothing, and increasingly, revenue. Seals While Canadian seas are home to nine species of seals, three of the most bountiful in the Arctic are the ringed, harp, and bearded seal. Other marine mammals may garner more attention than the demure ringed seal, but few play as integral a role in Inuit society. For nearly four millennia, Inuit have relied extensively on natsiq , the smallest and most common marine mammal in the territory.

Extractions: The Protected Resources Division (PRD), with offices in Juneau and Anchorage, is responsible for developing management and conservation programs for all but three species of marine mammals in Alaska, and for providing regional policy guidance on marine mammal and other protected species issues. In administering provisions of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the Fur Seal Act, and the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation Act, the biologists and staff of the PRD work with other NMFS offices to develop regulations and management measures to protect, conserve and restore marine mammal populations. A few of the areas that the PRD is specifically involved in are managing commercial fishery interactions with marine mammals and seabirds, coordinating Steller sea lion recovery efforts, co-management of marine mammal subsistence harvests with Alaska Native organizations, coordinating the Alaska Marine Mammal Stranding Network, establishing responsible marine mammal viewing guidelines, and developing and distributing public information and educational materials about marine mammals in Alaska. The division also consults on permit requests for scientific research, capture of marine mammals for public display, and takes of marine mammals incidental to other activities. Additionally, PRD consults with Federal agencies under Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act to ensure that Federal agency activities do not adversely affect threatened or endangered marine mammal species or their critical habitat.

Extractions: language or behavior? by Kimberly Amaral Go to "Marine Mammals' Greatest Hits" For decades, scientists have been listening to the seaslistening to the otherworldly "clicks" and songs of whales. It began in 1949, when William E. Schevill and B. Lawrence dropped their hydrophones (microphones designed for use underwater) into the Saguenay River of Quebec, making the first recording (~500K) of an identified speciesthe white or belukha whalein the wild. Since then, marine mammal scientists have been anxious to accurately record and understand the nature and purpose of these utterances. Preliminary research focused on whether or not these creatures could "talk." Most people are aware of the high intelligence of these creatures. Could they be using it to communicate with each other much like we use language? Peter Tyack, a researcher at Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institution (currently working at Stanford University), doesn't think soat least not yet. He says a lot more research has to be done before we can make such a determination. So far, most research has not investigated the most important aspects of languageis it cognitive and "aware," or is it simply a learned response for survival? Says Tyack, "It may make no more sense to compare these [animal] songs to language than to compare the marks on a peacock's tail to some strange hieroglyphic writing." Instead, scientists are now looking at marine mammal vocalizations as an indicator of behavior, and even for recognition of each other.

Though they currently reside in the ocean realm, all marine mammals were once land dwellers. The marine mammals, like all mammals, developed from mammal-like reptiles called therapsids. At some point in their life history certain mammals ventured into the sea. This was probably due to competative pressures. At first these mammals were probably scavengers, finding food wherever possible. Eventually, they developed adaptations that allowed them to become oceanic predators. There are three characteristics that all mammals share:
