Almost half the world's cetaceans (whales, porpoises and dolphins) have been reported in our waters. For example, the endemic Hector's dolphin (found nowhere else), a number of rare beaked whales, the New Zealand (Hooker's) sea lion (found only in our southern waters), and the widely distributed New Zealand fur seal. Other seals that visit our shores occasionally, such as the southern elephant seal and the leopard seal, are found in larger numbers in Antarctic and sub-antarctic waters. The populations of many species of large whales, (such as southern right whales and humpback whales) and both our indigenous seals, were reduced to near extinction by commercial whalers and sealers of the past two centuries. Some are still threatened or endangered, and now face additional threats from habitat degradation, global climate change, by-catch in fishing operations and accumulation of pollutants in the oceans.

CINMS Marine Mammal Sightings Database This CINMS database is a 'live', interactive compilation of marine mammal sightings in the Santa Barbara Channel. You can add sighting information, or view the sightings already contained in the database. From the CINMS: "The dramatic recovery of pinniped populations in the Channel Islands since the end of the fur trade has been documented in recent decades. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary currently provides habitat for breeding populations of four species of pinnipeds: the California sea lion, the northern fur seal, the northern elephant seal, and the harbor seal. Stellar sea lions and Guadalupe fur seals are occasional visitors to the area. All six species are found in the sanctuary at different times of year, feeding on abundant fish and invertebrate resources of the island shelves or hauling out on rocks and beaches."
