What about something even more exotic? While this certainly isn't as important a topic as who will replace Shannon on "Beverly Hills: 90210," it is fodder for lengthy debates among bike junkies (like myself). The six-part series we're about to start will examine metallurgy as it applies to bicycles. If we do our job right, you will be educated about all the popular materials currently used in bicycle-frame construction, and we'll take a look at what you can expect for the future. What I also hope to do is give you a "BS" filter for the clever and often misleading ads that our industry uses to prey on the underinformed. It really doesn't matter that boralyn was used for tank armor, or that rocket scientists designed your bike. You don't even have to wear a white lab coat to design a good bike. Sound engineering and an intimate knowledge of the biomechanical interface between bike and rider are the only prerequisites. To begin, you have to understand that the traditional bicycle frame is a highly evolved mechanical structure - highly evolved as in 100 years of tinkering. Attempts are constantly made to improve on its design, but most do little improving. Just designing a better frame may look like a simple problem, but it's not. Small improvements are made with materials and engineering advances, but improving by leaps and bounds doesn't happen - unless you believe the ads.

The center promotes the manufacturing excellence and competitiveness of the P/M industry, by undertaking research programs that are consistent with the priorities of the industry. Research projects are initiated and/or approved by members and are carried out by students and faculty members from a variety of academic disciplines, and are guided by the insights of P/M industrialists. PMRC conducts two types of research projects: technical projects that focus on scientific and engineering issues relevant to all stages of P/M processing; and management projects that address issues related to the organization and interconnectedness of the P/M industry. Technical projects are structured to advance the fundamental scientific understanding of P/M processes as well as to enhance specific engineering functions. PMRC operates in a consortium format that enables P/M companies to pool resources for research that are significantly larger in scope than would be possible for any single company. These resources serve as the basis to leverage research support with federal, state and private foundation funds. PMRC acts as an independent catalyst for industrial innovation and the exchange of information and ideas in powder metallurgy technology and management. It also serves as an educational center by disseminating research results to consortium members (and, eventually, to the P/M industry at large), and by developing courses and continuing education programs that address the educational needs of the industry.

Back to Physics News Update Number 594 June 20, 2002 by Phil Schewe, James Riordon, and Ben Stein Evolutionary Metallurgy A host of new materials may soon emerge from a novel research approach that combines improved quantum mechanical techniques and a search algorithm inspired by biological evolution. Although the method is helpful in the development of products ranging from battery components to catalysts, the Danish group pioneering the technique is beginning with a search for new super-alloys. In general, theoretical methods for predicting the properties of various blends of metals have been unwieldy, and the characteristics of new alloys are usually determined experimentally. Considering the hundreds of thousands of possible combinations that can be formed with even a small number of metals, searches for better alloys typically require both patience and luck. Now Jens Norskov (norskov@fysik.dtu.dk, 45-4525-3175) and colleagues at the Technical University of Denmark have managed to identify twenty of the most promising alloys out of nearly two hundred thousand combinations, without the need for time-consuming lab work. The researchers' method is based in part on maturing modeling techniques that rely on density functional theory (DFT), which can help predict material properties through the interactions of electron populations.
