After the 1906 earthquake and fire, which destroyed most of the original collections of birds and mammals, the department was reborn with the resurrection of the new Academy of Sciences. As a world renown repository for specimens and their accompanying information, the department's collections currently house over 105,000 specimens of birds and over 30,000 specimens of mammals. The department also houses a modern bioacoustics laboratory and an extensive sound library of over 4,000 bird and mammal recordings. Aside from maintaining these collections, department staff and associates are involved in various scientific studies, conservation efforts, educational programs, and international research projects.

    Extractions: Cornell University Museum of Vertebrates The Cornell University Museum of Vertebrates ( CUMV ) is an internationally recognized institution dedicated to the study of all vertebrate groups (fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals). It is an one of several natural history collections affiliated with Cornell University. The CUMV collections contain over 1.5 million specimens and serve as the primary repositories for vertebrates collected by past and present Cornellians working around the world. As a university based museum, it also serves as an important resource for undergraduate and graduate education. The CUMV is administered through the and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University . The museum has recently moved to a new facility located approximately five miles north of the main Cornell campus, at the Johnson Center for Birds and Biodiversity, along with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology . Support for this move and the purchase of new storage equipment (compact storage systems, shelving and specimen cases) has been provided through a grant from the National Science Foundation (DBI 0138123). As a research institution, our specimens, tissue samples and related specimen data are available to qualified members of the scientific community affiliated with academic and research institutions. We especially encourage the use of the collections in student research, whether as thesis work, independent study, or class projects. Although there are no public exhibits at the museum, museum staff try to provide assistance to members of the Cornell Community when ever possible and do offer tours for classes and other interested groups.

    Extractions: Collection History Search the Collection Catalog The Ornithology collection at the Peabody Museum is among the most comprehensive in North America, and has international significance in several areas including skeletal and pickled (wet preserves) specimens. Overall, the collection contains material for more than 6,500 species, over 70 percent of the birds of the world. Skin Collection: the old Yale University collection of some 6,000 to 8,000 skins has grown to over 100,000 since 1950. There is excellent taxonomic coverage and good geographic coverage with major holdings from the Philippines (7,500), Tanzania (5,000), India (6,000), Borneo (4,500), South Africa (4,000), Atlantic islands (2,300), Laos (3,700), Thailand (4,300), Mexico (4,200), Greece (2,700), New Guinea (3,600), Argentina (4,500), Brazil (4,300), and West Indies (2,000). Within the USA only Connecticut (4,000), and California (1,000) are represented by substantial numbers of skins. Skeleton Collection: the skeleton collection contains just over 9,000 specimens representing about 1,900 species. All but a handful of specimens are post-1950 and more than fifty percent are post-1965. There is good geographic representation with collections from Argentina (270 specimens; 110 species), Australia (228; 96), Brazil (735; 122), Dominican Republic (142), Kenya (192; 114), New Guinea (1217; 202), New Zealand (146), Thailand (163). In the USA, collections are from Arizona (273), California (484; 97), Connecticut (2345; 21), Maryland (100), Massachusetts (130), New Jersey (130), and New York (130).

Partners in Flight The Cerulean Warbler , a Neotropical migratory bird of high conservation concern, is experiencing population declines in parts of its range. Due to the Ceruleans low population density and patchy distributions accurate population trends are difficult to estimate, therefore, in order to adequately protect this species more information is needed about its habitat requirements, breeding biology, and population status. In order to to determine the number of breeding pairs and productivity, describe nesting habitat, and identify potential threats to the population and its habitat, the Cerulean Warbler Atlas Project CEWAP ) employed enthusiastic birders and biologists to survey known and potential Cerulean Warbler breeding sites from 1997 to 2000. Results from CEWAP will be used to produce management guidelines for Cerulean Warblers. As of December 2000 you can download the final report, "An Atlas of Cerulean Warbler Populations."

    Extractions: The march of red deer in upland Scotland has been matched by roe deer in lowland England. The roe deer, extinct in England and Wales 200 years ago, now numbers about 700,000. The sight of a big roe buck leaping across farmland thrills the heart. We are glad for its wild spirit, unfettered by hedges, fences and roads. Unfortunately its freedom is increasingly at the expense of other plants and animals. This spring the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the British Trust for Ornithology will begin monitoring birds in 350 woods. The study follows startling declines in many woodland species. Since the 1970s willow tit numbers have fallen 78 per cent, woodcock by 74 per cent, and song thrushes by more than half. Deer can change a wood drastically. They nibble back ash, bramble, hazel, honeysuckle and sallow, leaving less palatable species to flourish. They eat shoots and saplings, so preventing woodland from regenerating. Gradually they reduce the plant variety which is crucial for the diversity of other woodland wildlife.
