Extractions: Paleobotany (PAY lee oh BAHT uh nee), is the study of ancient plants. Paleobotany is a branch of paleontology, the study of ancient plants, animals, and other organisms. Specialists called paleobotanists investigate the evolution of plant life and the origins and relationships of plant groups. They also examine the link between vegetation and the earth's changing climate. Paleobotany includes the study of such simple organisms as ancient algae, fungi, and bacteria. In addition, it involves searching for the earliest evidence of life in rocks more than 3 billion years old. Paleobotanists interpret the earth's history by examining plant fossils. These fossils have been preserved in sedimentary rocks (rocks formed from deposits laid down by ancient rivers, lakes, and seas). Paleobotanists have found the earliest land plants in sedimentary rocks that are more than 430 million years old. Remains of early forests are abundant in rocks 350 million years old. The ancestors of all major groups of land plants lived in these forests. Today, the most numerous plants on earth are angiosperms (flowering plants). Paleobotanists have discovered that the first angiosperms appeared about 140 million years ago, during the age of the dinosaurs. Paleobotanists study the features that plants have developed to survive in their environment. These scientists are thus able to describe the type of climate that existed millions of years ago. Paleobotany contributes to an understanding of how and why the earth's climate changes. This understanding is important in predicting the changes in climate that humans may cause through the greenhouse effect (a gradual warming of the earth's surface).

Extractions: (Beck, 1970) Paleobotany is concerned with the evolutionary and environmental history of plants through the course of geological time. At Michigan, museum research in this area started in 1929 with appointment of Chester A. Arnold as a Museum of Paleontology curator and Botany professor. Professor Arnold was succeeded by James A. Doyle, Charles B. Beck, professor emeritus , and Robyn J. Burnham. Professor Burnham is curator of paleobotany in the Museum of Paleontology and professor of paleobotany in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Paleobotanical collections at the University of Michigan contain approximately 15,000 individually catalogued specimens. This estimate is necessarily conservative because an individual specimen may contain more than one leaf, stem, flower, or fruit impression. The collections are strong in Paleozoic vascular plants, especially pteridophytes, progymnosperms such as Archaeopteris , and gymnosperms. These specimens document the rise of seed plants, and early increases in complexity of water- and nutrient-conducting tissues that allowed diversification of the first arborescent (tree-like) growth forms. Early Cretaceous angiosperms, the earliest flowering plants, are also well represented by isolated leaves and dispersed cuticle remains recovered from sediments deposited well before the time when larger portions of these plants are preserved intact. The collections also include important holdings of Cenozoic ferns and angiosperms from the western United States. Among algal groups, we have one of the world's largest collections of Paleozoic receptaculitids, and the only such collection for which most specimens have associated data on field orientation (critical for assessing the anatomy and growth mode of this problematic group).
